Wednesday afternoon, 6:00 pm
Dear friends,
We want to update you regarding Don’s progress. As you know, he had surgery for a cyst-type tumor above his pituitary gland which was wrapped around his optic nerve, causing his vision to deteriorate very rapidly. This surgery took place Monday afternoon. (He was extremely tired after this surgery.)
Tuesday morning they found that the route through which they had operated was draining cerebral-spinal fluid and it was necessary to return to surgery and repair the “patch” and pack the sphenoid sinus. This surgery took place on Tuesday afternoon. When we came to his ICU room after he had a chance to wake up, we found him growing very alert. Suddenly he said, “Look!” He pointed to the wall two rooms away and said, “I can see!” He began to name everything that he could see . . . the telephone, the buttons on the telephone, the machine and the design on it. He went on and on describing what he was seeing. Then he said, “I can’t see any more, because I’ve got tears in my eyes!” Then we handed him a paper with 12 pt font printed on it. He began to read it without his glasses.
For several months he has been struggling to see people across the room. He has read only with great difficulty and a magnifying glass. And he never read without glasses. Now his eyes appear to be better than they were prior to his deterioration. We are so pleased and excited!
I will have to tell you that his sense of humor has emerged unscathed . . in fact, perhaps even a little exaggerated. He has time to tease the nurses, his kids, and his only wife! The doctors, though, he thanks over and over for returning his life to him.
By the way, the tumor appears to be exactly what the surgeon expected to find . . . the remnants of cells that were part of Don’s make-up before he was even born. It makes us think of Psalm 139 . . . God knows while we are being knit together . . . And He knows all about us now!
We are praising God. What a God! And we thank you all for the mighty waves of prayer that have been flooding God’s throne. What friends we have in all of you! We will appreciate your continued prayers.
Our love,
Marti (and Don)
