CHRISTIAN WEB AND BLOG AWARDS

The Seventh-day Adventist evangelistic website, <lifedevelopment.info> was runner up in Friday night's Christian Web and Blog awards for the most successful Evangelistic Blog.

In a nation-wide competition organised by Premier Christian Radio, nominations were accepted for categories ranging from Best Creative Christian Blog or Website through best Church Website to the Most Original Worship Blog and the popular People's Choice Award which was won by the Christian mental well-being website, <mindandsoul.info>. The Best Church Website award, with a grand prize of £1000 was King's Church, Manchester with their website, <MakingJesusFamous.org.uk>. The LIFEdevelopment site was joint runner up in the category for most successful Evangelistic Blog.

Miroslav Pujic, creator of the concept behind <lifedevelopment.info>, was pleased to note the quality of the contenders for the evangelism award. "I'm delighted for <lifedevelopment.info> to be associated with sites like the winners, <Rejesus.co.uk> and joint runner up, <Bethinking.org>. They are excellent sites and each one, in a different way, is making Christianity accessible to those outside the church door."

"What a tremendous witness for the outstanding work which is still taking place in the LIFEdevelopment programme of our church," states Eglan Brooks, LIFEdevelopment coordinator for the Adventist Church in the UK and Ireland. "I am happy to see, once again, those outside of our church recognising the unique concept which has been developed in the UK." With this recognition Pastor Brooks is encouraging those not yet involved in the LIFEdevelopment programme in their local church that "now is the time to get involved before you are left behind." Together with Miroslav Pujic he will be running the next training course for churches interested in LIFEdevelopment this November. Email <ebrooks@adventist.org.uk> for more details.

Peter Kerridge, Chief Executive of Premier states that "over 21 million people a day are using the internet in the UK." In a speech given at the awards he stated, "Christians have a strong online presence and because of that, it is important to recognise and commend the outstanding work of Christians on the net." With a developing web presence, the Seventh-day Adventist Church is committed to be part of that initiative.

The inspiring architecture of Sir Christopher Wren made a fitting backdrop to the event, hosted at the St Stephen Walbrook church in London on Friday, 21 September. As home of the London Internet Church this is a building used to innovation. It is where the Samaritans first started in 1953 and today it is a church which actively involves itself in the life of the city and the web.

HARPER BELL SCHOOL IN THE NEWS

With the current media debate on Faith Schools a Seventh-day Adventist owned and run primary school in Birmingham has been the subject of much media interest over the last week. The Mail on Sunday was among a number of papers who reported that the Harper Bell School, close to the Camp Hill Seventh-day Adventist church, could become "the first all black state school". David Wilkes visited the school and stated that it is a successful primary school with an enrolment of 118 pupils. He states, "the school wants to become voluntary aided in a similar way to other faith schools, so it can help improve the academic performance of more black pupils." Under the proposals, Wilkes adds, the school would expand to include a secondary school with a total of 300 pupils.

The ethos of Adventist education makes a difference and it is in the context of aiming for excellence that the school is applying for Voluntary Aided (VA) status. Head teacher, Solomon Senessie, told the Mail, "We want to make sure that we can cater for all who want to come here. Parents should not be at a disadvantage simply because they do not have the money to pay the fees."
While the debate in the press has revolved around the issue of it being a black school, Education director for the Seventh-day Adventist church in the UK and Ireland, Dr Keith Davidson states that the issue is not one of colour, but of ethos and excellence. The school, as with all Adventist schools, is open to children of all backgrounds and faiths. "It is the excellence of the Adventist ethos that is encouraging parents to send their children to this school. It is certainly true that in this case the school can be seen to be raising the standards of what are sometimes seen as disadvantaged black children."
Negotiations as to VA status are still in the early stages. The trustees will be meeting with Birmingham City Council next month.

LIVE HEALTHY AND STAY WEALTHY [Tricia Evelyn]

Live Healthy and Stay Wealthy was the theme of the Ipswich Seventh-day Adventist church's first Healthy Living weekend. Starting with Sabbath morning worship, Dr Chidi delivered an informative yet jargon free health talk. This followed in the afternoon with a diabetic workshop led by Gloria Simon, a specialist nurse.

Sunday moved to outreach as the church opened its doors and greeted members and visitors by offering health checks. Around fifty-five people, of which one third were non-Adventist, attended and were offered advice and checks on blood sugar levels, cholesterol and body mass.

Glenda Racquel and her health team are encouraged by the response and are now planning future events with the support of Elise Staple, the South England Conference Health Ministries director. How did the church members feel? "This was truly a positive event and much sort after and needed," said one. "It is another way in which the Ipswich Seventh-day Adventist church is reaching out to the needs of the community."

ADRA SHOEBOX APPEAL

The first shoeboxes have already arrived at the ADRA office in Watford for this year's shoebox appeal. ADRA-UK's Executive-director, Bert Smit, commented: "We are preparing for the biggest shoebox shipment ever and need all the help we can get to bring smiles to faces of the orphans in Madagascar". Orphans on the island are at the bottom of the social ladder and typically the poorest of the poor. With your help ADRA will bring a little happiness this Christmas to thousands of children there. ADRA is requesting that the shoeboxes are clearly marked to indicate if it is for a boy or girl and the approximate age group (4-14). Please only pack new items and do not include food or battery operated toys etc. The ADRA team in Madagascar advise that simple 'flip flops' (slippers) would be very much appreciated - why not include a pair? Other items could include: a notepad, pencils, small (soft) toys, a mug - simple things that the children will cherish and enjoy.

ADRA is coordinating to have a few collection points. More information about these is available from our office (01923 681743). The 40-foot container will ship on Thursday, 15 November to arrive in time for the holiday season. The latest deadline for shoeboxes to arrive at the ADRA office is Monday, 12 November.

Let's bring smiles to faces!

BUC COMMITTEE UPDATES

Tithe has seen an increase of six percent over the last twelve months and church membership has increased to 27,327 as of 30 June 2007. These were the bear-bone facts presented to the British Union Executive Committee on Thursday, 20 September. Of more interest were the underlying trends as Executive Secretary, Eric Lowe noted that transfer growth into the UK has stabilised and slowed slightly. While the baptism and profession of faith figures were only 25 lower than for the same period last year, a healthy discussion by the trustees focused on how to promote growth, whether there are trends and patterns we can learn from, and how to help retain those who have recently joined the church.

Other good news for the week focused around the Seventh-day Adventist Association board meeting. In dealing with land, properties and leases it was noted that the first Adventist church building will shortly be established on the Isle of Man. After years of meeting in a retirement home the members and friends in the town of Douglas will soon be meeting in their own building at a cost of £55,000. On the outskirts of London another church group has negotiated an indefinite lease from the Anglican churches scheme for redundant churches. This is good news in that the church can be restored as a place of worship and that Adventists have a new home. Monthly tithe reports are available from the Treasury page of the BUC website, <www.adventist.org.uk>.

WEEK OF PRAYER READINGS 2007

"Words of Hope" is the theme for the 2007 Week of Prayer scheduled for Adventist communities across the world for the week starting Sabbath, 3 November. World Church Vice-President, Pardon Mwansa states in his introduction to this year's readings, "Our heavenly Father is well aware of the toils and challenges of this sinful world we live in. It grieves God to see His children going through pain of any kind. God has a plan to bring all this to an end. He says, "I am making everything new!" (Rev. 21:5). He is preparing a better home for us. It is this kind of Hope that will be explored during the week. Worship leaders who want a preview of the readings can access them from the following link: <http://www.adventistreview.org/article.php?id=1382>.

COVENTRY CHURCH CENTENARY 2008 [J Alison Duncan]

The Coventry Seventh-day Adventist church will be celebrating its 100th anniversary at this time next year. THE BEACH LECTURE 2007

This annual event at Newbold College will continue the theme of religions and peace initiated by 2006 lecturer, and former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey. The title for this year's lecture is: "Religions for peace? A global challenge?" Dr Gunnar Stålsett, a member of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee and formerly Lutheran Bishop of Oslo and General Secretary of the Lutheran World Federation will present the lecture in the Andrew Mustard Chapel, Moor Close, Newbold College on Tuesday, 9 October at 7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome. For further details go to <www. newbold.ac.uk>.

HOAXES AND VIRUSES

Viruses and hoax emails are the bane of modern life. From time to time we find it important to remind BUC News readers that the best thing to do with a forwarded request or remarkable story that is to impossible to be true is to press the delete key. This is also true for a number of hoax virus messages that one reader points out to us can be checked at <www.symantec.com/avcenter> or <www.sophos.com/security/hoaxes>. A sadder side of the escalation of spam is that from time to time BUC email addresses are harvested by spammers and used to send out spurious offers, the most recent this week being for medication. Our apologies if you get any of these. We do try and protect ourselves against them as much as possible. Because the domain sometimes gets harvested like this there is a chance that your spam protection will block genuine BUC emails. To ensure that you get this and other emails make sure that you put this in your safe senders list.
