ADVENTIST STREET PASTOR FOR LINCOLN
Sue Matthan will be hitting the streets of Lincoln this Friday night. She's not out clubbing, nor planning to return home smashed. Rather, she is there to provide support and a "reassuring presence" in the city centre. "I love listening to people, talking to people, sharing, laughing, crying, praying, searching the Word and being able to live the love of Jesus in practical ways," she says. "I care about what happens in and around my wider community enough to stand up and take some risks."
As part of a team of 25 recently trained volunteer street pastors she will patrol the city's streets at weekends, offering help and advice to visitors and partygoers. She told BUC News, "This is really exciting! When one thinks of Lincoln, they do not necessarily think of the problems associated with the 'night-time economy', homelessness, alcohol/drug abuse etc. Believe me, it is real even here in Lincolnshire." Sue is someone who has implicit trust in her God. "I just do what God calls me to do," she says. "God is amazing, and has enabled me to be part of the first team of street pastors being trained and sent out."
Following a commissioning service today, Friday, 5 October, Sue will be out on the streets in teams with a minimum of four people. She feels called to ministry but, she says, not in the conventional sense. "Comforting the vulnerable, the homeless, the drunk, the drugged and the lonely in a heaving city centre will be a risky challenge," she says. "These may be people who would never set foot inside a church building. How will they ever know about the touch of Jesus unless we go?" In total there are between 750 and 1,000 street pastors volunteering in the UK.
MARRIAGE HELPS EDUCATION
A report released by the Office for National Statistics confirms that the Biblical values of marriage still give families an added advantage in 2007. While married couples now only make up 71 percent of UK families their children are more likely to succeed in their education compared with those whose parents are cohabiting or those in stepfamily relationships. The report states that "children aged 17 living in married couple non-stepfamilies were most likely to be in full-time education and to have Level 2 or higher qualifications."
Statistics, naturally, only show a trend and there will be children who succeed, and others who fail, in every situation. However, the trend shows that the values of stability and emotional security found in a traditional marriage help to give children an added advantage. Seventh-day Adventists affirm the family stating, "In the family circle, deep and abiding needs for belonging, love, and intimacy are met in significant ways." Furthermore, in a statement released on the World Church website they state, "Although some family relationships may fall short of the ideal, and restoration from damaging experiences may not be fully accomplished, where the love of Christ reigns, His Spirit will promote unity and harmony making such homes channels of life-giving joy and power in the church and community." NEW GROUP FOR ROTHERHAM [Paul Haworth, NEC Executive Secretary]
Sabbath, 22 September was a special day in Rotherham. After four years of planning and working towards a church plant, Paul Haworth, North England Conference Executive Secretary met with the 25 core members and other supporters to ask God's blessing on a group who have committed themselves to form a new church in Rotherham. The Rotherham church was disbanded some years ago, so it is very special to see this church resurrected to life once more. Under the leadership of their minister, Victor Marshall, the core group meet each Sabbath at Springwell Gardens Community Centre, Eastwood View, Rotherham, S65 1NH. They are currently blanketing the town with Adventist Discovery Centre cards before engaging in outreach next year. Every Wednesday they meet for prayer and planning.
Prayer is important in the NEC. Each week just under 200 people are praying for church growth, for new groups, and for those involved in outreach. Since starting this initiative, nearly 2 years ago, there has been a steady growth in the number of new groups taking shape. Recently Northampton church opened a Branch Sabbath School. In the West Midlands Pastor Dalbir Masih, the NEC Asian Evangelism Co-ordinator, has been able to start two Urdu speaking congregations in Walsall, and in Kidderminster. Kidderminster had no Adventist presence but now there are two groups. The second is a worship small group led by Steve Winnit. Leeds opened a new church in Beeston and at the beginning of the year a new church was formed in the Stoneycroft area of Liverpool. Why not join the NEC East Window prayer team and select one day a week when you remember the towns and villages where there are no Adventist churches or groups. There may even be a place near you that can become the focus of your prayer.
EVANGELISM IN SEC [Richard de Lisser, SEC Communication Director]
Over fifty candidates baptised in over two weeks demonstrates that evangelism is alive and well in the South England Conference. Traditionally the months of September to November have always been the favoured time of year for the holding of major revivals and campaigns in our churches. This year is no exception.
Watford Town culminated its 'Mission of Mercy' campaign with a baptism last Sabbath, 29 September. Eight individuals were added to the Kingdom of God through the preaching of Pastor Michael Harvey, President of the North Jamaica Mission. Balham have just finished a two week revival with Pastor Elwin St Rose, a chaplain in the US army. Pastor St Rose has just finished a tour of duty in Iraq and shared with the congregation many stories from this theatre of action. Six persons responded to his appeal to enlist in God's army and were also baptized last Sabbath.
Over the past three weeks the Portuguese churches in London have been conducting separate but concurrent evangelistic campaigns culminating in bringing all four churches together at the Advent Centre for what is called 'Harvest Week'. The speaker for this special week is Pastor Nemuel Stina from Brazil. He is a former Voice of Prophecy speaker and now pastors one of the largest churches in San Paulo. Four people have already been baptized and another large baptism is planned for this weekend as the programme draws to a close. Also, this Sabbath, 6 October a month-long series of meetings concludes for the Bristol district of churches. Pastor Richard Daly states that seven candidates are ready to be baptized.
The Croydon church has been holding a series of meetings with evangelist Pastor Hainsworth Joseph from the USA. Local church pastor, Dr Brighton Kavaloh, is very excited about the 22 candidates he has ready for baptism this Sabbath. The Clapton community church began a two week evangelistic campaign last Sabbath, with speakers Pastors Robert William, Bernard Akakpo, and Michael Harvey. A baptism is planned for next Sabbath, 13 October. 'Finding the Christ in your Crisis!' is a two week campaign being run by the Hackney church with evangelist Pastor John Parker from the USA. The church has been full to overflowing every night and they too are planning a baptism next Sabbath.
This is just the beginning. Starting this week Pastor Sam Neves shares, 'Experience Freedom Beyond Your Senses' for two weeks at the Norbury church and also at the Wimbledon International church under the theme 'Something Missing'. Pastor Roger Morris from Trinidad and Tobago opens London District 6B's two week campaign this Sabbath at the Brixton church with singing evangelist Delina Roberts. Also starting this Sabbath Pastor Chiluba from Zambia begins a series of meetings at the Beckton Maranatha church.
And finally the Plaistow church begins a series of Prophecy meetings from 13-27 October with Dr Sharath Babu Nakka, a blind evangelist and theology professor from India. Dr Nakka, blind since the age of 10, is an expert in eschatology as it relates to the books of Daniel and Revelation. He has served at Spicer Memorial College for over 18 years and has conducted forty evangelistic campaigns all over India and three meetings in the United States. He is a God fearing man who composes and sings Christian songs in his mother tongue.
Evangelism is alive and well in the South England Conference!
ROUNDELWOOD UPDATE
Roundelwood Health Spa and Lifestyle Centre now has a potential buyer giving hope for the continuance of the centre as a Spa and protecting the jobs of current staff. The Health Centre is currently owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church but, despite positive management initiatives, it has run at a substantial deficit for a number of years. The Good Health Association Board met last weekend after receiving a number of bids for the property. As a result the board is now in negotiation with a buyer who intends to build upon the current ethos of the institution. For a background to the decision to sell Roundelwood visit <http://www.adventistinfo.org.uk/departments/ president/Roundelwood_closure.pdf>.
MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE - HARDER OR EASIER? [John Wilby, Scottish Mission Communication Sponsor]
More than 100 youth from across Scotland came together in Aberdeen on Sabbath, 29 September for worship, reflection and a feast of gospel music. It was the Scottish Mission Youth Day of Fellowship. Josephine Eikum, Aberdeen Youth leader and her team, put together a thought-provoking and inspiring programme with musical and other contributions from Aberdeen, Dundee, Crieff and Glasgow.
Addressing the day's theme, 'Making the Right Choice', Pastor Paul Tompkins, Trans-European Division Youth Ministries director, posed the question, "Is it easier or harder to be a Seventh-day Adventist Christian today than it was for parents thirty years ago?". A straw poll of those present revealed that most thought it was harder. The paradox was, he said, that because it was "easier" - we don't have as much in the world to ground us - it is "harder".
He related the choice made by Demas who, in 2 Timothy, deserted Paul because he "loved the world". He contrasted this with Mark who, when inclined to give up, was encouraged by Barnabas to continue. "Who made the right choice?" he asked. "Like Mark" he said "whenever the going gets tough and we fall, we should get up and 'finish the race'".
In the afternoon, a questionnaire circulated earlier, sought comments on the following statements about life's choices: "There's nothing wrong with breaking the law as long as it doesn't hurt anyone"; "The Bible isn't relevant to today's young people"; "The philosophy for life is to do whatever feels and seems right as long as it doesn't hurt others"; "Every religion offers a different explanation of the meaning of life and truth"; and "Freedom means being able to do whatever you wish as long as it's legal".
In a world where youth are daily faced with difficult choices, the congregation's reaction to further questions produced some revealing responses. "What would you do if you found a wallet with money in it but no address or, if given too much change at the supermarket?" "Would you cheat on your tax return or, if pressed for time, get on a train with no ticket or park in a disabled bay?"
Summing up the day's deliberations, Pastor Tompkins said "As Christians, choices are all about how we apply what we know - in the Bible - to our everyday living".
EBAY-ING FOR ADRA [Bert Smit, ADRA-UK Executive Director]
In recent months the work of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, ADRA, has benefited from donations made by sales on the online auction site eBay. Traders have earmarked ADRA as a beneficiary of all or a portion of the sales. More than £200 has been raised so far using this method. If you sell on eBay, why not give a percentage of your proceeds to ADRA? Simply add the 'Give to a Charity' links on eBay as ADRA is a listed charity. Bert Smit, ADRA's Executive director commented: "It is fantastic to see the innovative ways in which people remember the work of ADRA. Using eBay is a great way to sell unwanted items and make the proceeds help to alleviate poverty in the world."
BUC ASSOCIATE TREASURER CALLED TO LEBANON
Congratulations to Donovan Cleary, Associate Treasurer of the British Union Conference, who has been asked to serve as Secretary-Treasurer of the East Mediterranean Field, based in Lebanon. Donovan has served for the last two years both as Associate Treasurer and as the Director for the Church's legal entity, the Seventh-day Adventist Association Ltd. The Union are obviously saddened at the loss of an excellent, efficient and friendly employee. However, the leadership wish him well as he plans to take up his new responsibilities at the beginning of 2008.
As a result of this call the British Union Conference is seeking to fill the position of Associate Treasurer. This position is normally considered a 'call' appointment of the British Union Conference nominating committee and would be open to people with significant experience and qualifications in Accountancy (ACCA/CIMA) and the right to work in the UK. Full details are available in the Small Ads section of this newsletter or by contacting Mr Victor Pilmoor <vpilmoor@adventist.org.uk>.
MARKETING SKILLS? ADRA NEEDS YOU! [Bert Smit, ADRA-UK Executive Director]

Please send your CV and contact details to <info@adra.org.uk>.
GOOGLE MAPS AND TOM TOM
Thanks to the initiative of Sam Neves, associate pastor of the Holloway and Muswell Hill churches, Adventist congregations are making their mark on Google Earth. With Google Earth <http://earth.google.com> installed on your computer you can download a file from the BUC churches website that will pinpoint most Adventist churches in the UK and Ireland.
Google Maps information is generated from the same database that provides Satellite Navigation information for Tom Tom and other systems. With the latest October update this includes 320 churches as well as the three administrative offices of the church. Latest additions to the database include Birmingham, Great Barr, two new groups in Kidderminster and the recently established church plant in Rotherham. To download these databases visit the "Churches" page on <www.adventist.org.uk>.
"IN CONVERSATION" NOW AVAILABLE "ON DEMAND"
Following a series of experiments, the BUC Media Centre programme, "In Conversation" is now available "On Demand" for viewing or downloading from the website, <www.hopetv.org.uk>. This initiative is to make the programme more accessible to both church members and non-Adventists friends at a time that is appropriate for them. Pastor John Surridge, President of the Adventist Church in Wales tried it out at Telford church last week. He says, "I played it direct from my laptop with a 3000 lumen projector and a good sound system and the congregation applauded afterwards!"
At the moment only a small selection of programmes are available but the plan is to gradually increase the library in the coming weeks. It takes just a few minutes to download a half-hour programme with a broadband connection and then it will play straight from your computer. While many viewers will want to continue watching this, along with the great variety of other programmes on the Hope Channel, this on demand service fits in with the continuing trend of modern media to make programming available at the convenience of the viewer.
The Hope Channel schedule is undergoing a slight reshuffle at the moment with the result that some viewers have been disappointed this week to find their favourite programmes moved to a different time slot. The schedule for "In Conversation" that should be running next week is as follows:
Monday: 3:00 am and 7:00 pm.
Wednesday: 8:30 am.
Friday: 4:30 am and 8:00 pm.
Sabbath: 12:30 and 3:00 pm.
"In Conversation" is an interview programme produced by the BUC's Media Centre and broadcast on Hope Channel Europe. North American and International versions of Hope Channel are only available on the Internet here in Europe. To find out more and to watch Hope Channel online go to our new website: <www.hopetv.org.uk>.
