Matthew 9:36 NIV “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
Sunday – What Kind of Man is This? Matthew 8:1-4 Holman “1 ¶ When He came down from the mountain, large crowds followed Him. 2 Right away a man with a serious skin disease came up and knelt before Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 3 Reaching out His hand He touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean.” Immediately his disease was healed. 4 Then Jesus told him, “See that you don’t tell anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses prescribed, as a testimony to them.”” Matthew 8:23-27 God’s Word to the Nations “23 ¶ Jesus’ disciples went with him as he left in a boat. 24 Suddenly, a severe storm came across the sea. The waves were covering the boat. Yet, Jesus was sleeping. 25 So they woke him up, saying, "Lord! Save us! We’re going to die!" 26 Jesus said to them, "Why do you cowards have so little faith?" Then he got up, gave an order to the wind and the sea, and the sea became very calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!"” Matthew 8:27 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES So the tempest rolls and thickens over the head of the awakened sinner. So he trembles over immediate and awful destruction. So while the storm of wrath howls, and hell threatens to engulf him, he comes trembling to the Saviour. He hears; he rebukes the storm; and the sinner is safe. An indescribable peace takes possession of the soul; and he glides on a tranquil sea to the haven of eternal rest.
Monday – The Sheer Marvel of It Matthew 9:27-34 English Standard Version “27 ¶ And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." 29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, "See that no one knows about it." 31 But they went away and spread his fame through all that district. 32 As they were going away, behold, a demon–oppressed man who was mute was brought to him. 33 And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." 34 But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons."” Matthew 12:22-23 ESV “22 ¶ Then a demon–oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, "Can this be the Son of David?"” Matthew 14:25-31 ESV “25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid." 28 And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." 29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"” Matthew 14:34-36 ESV “34 ¶ And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick 36 and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.” Matthew 15:29-31 NLT “29 ¶ Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down. 30 A vast crowd brought him the lame, blind, crippled, mute, and many others with physical difficulties, and they laid them before Jesus. And he healed them all. 31 The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking around, and those who had been blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel.” Matthew 15:31 COMMENTARY THE FOURFOLD GOSPEL The people whom Jesus healed were Jews, but daily intercourse with the heathen of Decapolis had tended to cool their religious ardor. The works of Jesus revived this ardor and caused them to praise the God whose prophet they esteemed Jesus to be. Matthew 20:29-34 NLT “29 ¶ As Jesus and the disciples left the city of Jericho, a huge crowd followed behind. 30 Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" 31 The crowd told them to be quiet, but they only shouted louder, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" 32 Jesus stopped in the road and called, "What do you want me to do for you?" 33 "Lord," they said, "we want to see!" 34 Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed him.” Mark 2:1-12 NLT “1 ¶ Several days later Jesus returned to Capernaum, and the news of his arrival spread quickly through the town. 2 Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there wasn’t room for one more person, not even outside the door. And he preached the word to them. 3 Four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. 4 They couldn’t get to Jesus through the crowd, so they dug through the clay roof above his head. Then they lowered the sick man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. 5 Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "My son, your sins are forgiven." 6 But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there said to themselves, 7 "What? This is blasphemy! Who but God can forgive sins!" 8 Jesus knew what they were discussing among themselves, so he said to them, "Why do you think this is blasphemy? 9 Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven’ or ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’? 10 I will prove that I, the Son of Man, have the authority on earth to forgive sins." Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, 11 "Stand up, take your mat, and go on home, because you are healed!" 12 The man jumped up, took the mat, and pushed his way through the stunned onlookers. Then they all praised God. "We’ve never seen anything like this before!" they exclaimed.” Mark 2:12 COMMENTARY ROBERTSON’S NT WORD PICTURES It was an amazing proceeding and made it unnecessary for Jesus to refute the scribes further on this occasion. The amazement (existasthai, our ecstasy, as Lu 5:26 has it), was too general and great for words. The people could only say: "We never saw it on this fashion" (Houtôs oudepote eidamen). Jesus had acted with the power of God and claimed equality with God and had made good his claim. Luke 6:19 NLT “Everyone was trying to touch him, because healing power went out from him, and they were all cured.”
Tuesday – The Motive Behind It Matthew 9:35-36 NRSV “35 ¶ Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Matthew 9:36 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES The word used here refers to the weariness and fatigue which results from labour and being burdened. He saw the people burdened with the rites of religion and the doctrines of the Pharisees; sinking down under their ignorance and traditions, and neglected by those who ought to have been enlightened teachers, scattered and driven out without care and attention.
Wednesday – Sign of a New Day Isaiah 29:18-19 NKJV “18 In that day the deaf shall hear the words of the book, And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness. 19 The humble also shall increase [their] joy in the LORD, And the poor among men shall rejoice In the Holy One of Israel.” Isaiah 35:5-6 NKJV “5 ¶ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. 6 Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert.” Isaiah 35:6 COMMENTARY GENEVA BIBLE NOTES They who were barren and destitute of the graces of God, will have them given by Christ. Isaiah 61:1-3 NKJV “1 ¶ "The Spirit of the Lord GOD [is] upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to [those who are] bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, 3 To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified."”
Thursday – Sign of the Final Restoration Mark 5:35-42 Moffatt NT “35 ¶ He was still speaking when a message came from the house of the synagogue-president, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher to come any further?" 36 Instantly Jesus ignored the remark and told the presiident, "Have no fear, only believe." 37 He would not allow anyone to accompany him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 So they reached the president’s house, where he saw a tumult of people wailing and making shrill lament! 39 and on entering he asked them, "Why make a noise and wail? The child is not dead but asleep." 40 They laughed at him. However, he put them all outside and taking the father and mother of the child as well as his companions he went in to where the child was lying; 41 then he took the child’s hand and said to her, "Talitha koum"—which may be translated, "Little girl, I am telling you to rise." 42 The girl got up at once and began to walk (she was twelve years old); and at once they were lost in utter amazement.” Mark 5:39 COMMENTARY ROBERTSON’S NT WORD PICTURES Mark, Matthew, and Luke all quote Jesus as saying that "the child is not dead, but sleepeth." Jesus undoubtedly meant that she was not dead to stay dead, though some hold that the child was not really dead. It is a beautiful word (she is sleeping, katheudei) that Jesus uses of death. Luke 7:11-15 Moffatt NT “11 ¶ It was shortly afterwards that he made his way to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd. 12 Just as he was near the gate of the town, there was a dead man being carried out; he was the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the town were with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, he felt pity for her and said to her, "Do not weep." 14 Then he went forward and touched the bier; the bearers stopped, and he said, "Young man, I bid you rise." 15 Then the corpse sat up and began to speak; and Jesus gave him back to his mother.” John 11:38-44 MKJV “38 Then Jesus, groaning in Himself again, came to the tomb. And it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 39 Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who died, said to Him, Lord, by this time he stinks. For it is [the] fourth [day]. 40 Jesus answered her, Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God? 41 Then they took away the stone where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up [His] eyes and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 And I know that You hear Me always, but because of the people who stand by I said [it], so that they may believe that You have sent Me. 43 And saying these things, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, Here! Outside! 44 And he who had died came out, bound hand and foot with sheets, and his face was bound with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Untie him and let [him] go!” Acts 3:19-21 MKJV “19 Therefore repent and convert so that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from [the] presence of the Lord. 20 And He shall send Jesus Christ, who before was proclaimed to you, 21 whom Heaven truly needs to receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by [the] mouth of His holy prophets since the world began.”
