ADRA - ANNUAL APPEAL ON TARGET
The 2008 Annual Appeal has ended and agents are busy preparing their reports and banking the funds received. As of Thursday, 24 April over £300,000 has already been paid into the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) appeal account. "This is a great result and as final deposits are made it will certainly increase," states ADRA-UK director, Bert Smit. "We are hopeful that last year's total of £635,000 will be match or surpassed."
Pastor Eglan Brooks, Personal Ministries director at the British Union Conference is delighted at the response this year despite the many challenges, including the weather, faced by some of our members. "Our members have conquered many mountains to engage themselves this year in Ingathering. I personally want to commend them for their outstanding service."
Bert Smit agrees. "We want to express our thankfulness to all the committed volunteers who used not only their time but also their financial means to help with this year's Appeal."
As new challenges and needs arise, ADRA will continue to strive to realise its mission of reflecting God's love through compassionate acts of humanitarian service without regard to age, ethnicity or political or religious association. "We are thankful to our Lord for His blessings in a work that addresses the needs of so many people," states Smit. "I want to thank you for your prayers and your support as we continue to reach out and bring hope to suffering humanity."

ADRA FUN RUN [Richard de Lisser, SEC Communication Director]
Sunday, 20 April saw runners and walkers, joggers and strollers gathered together at London's Crystal Palace Park with one intention in mind, to participate in this year's annual ADRA Fun Run and raise money for those in need. Participants defied the near freezing temperatures adorned in their jade blue and white ADRA Fun Run t-shirts. Formally given their running orders by Dr Terry Messenger, Personal Ministries and Sabbath School director for the South England Conference (SEC), the run was officially started at 10:15 am by the suitably clad President of the SEC Pastor Sam Davis donned in his track suit. He prayed for God's presence, did the traditional countdown and the 2008 ADRA Fun Run was on its way.
Among the 250 participants there were some colourful characters. Samantha Robinson of the Balham church donned a large Afro for effect. When asked if it was her own hair she replied, "Yes it's mine. I bought it!" Two ladies were also seen helping each other around the 13 mile course in a three legged race. Two legs tied together and an arm around each other they moved in tandem to complete their goal.
Bert Smit, director for ADRA-UK stated that, "What was most inspiring was the good spirit in which everyone participated, from the friendly volunteers helping out to the exhausted runners/walkers - all wanting to go the extra distance to 'make a difference.'"
Seven-year-old Jemuel, highlighted in last week's BUC News lead story, continued his fund-raising as both he, his mother, and two sisters completed the course. Jemuel, from the Croydon church, moved nearer his personal goal of £1,000 on the day taking his total to £817. On Thursday, 24 April his fund-raising website, <
http://www.croydonadventist.org/adra/v.php?vol=jemuelr> indicates that he has now exceeded his target achieving a total of £1,089.41.
As chief organiser, Dr Terry Messenger was very pleased with the day. "I was delighted with the numbers participating," he said. "It was especially good to see the older and younger generations walking and running together enjoying each others company whilst raising funds for a worthwhile cause. I wish to thank everybody for taking part - each person's contribution is valuable and will help make a big difference in someone's life."
The day ended in sunshine with runners and walkers, joggers and strollers tired but satisfied with a job well done, knowing that many will be benefited from their efforts both now and for eternity. A selection of photos from the Fun Run are available on the BUC website, <
www.adventist.org.uk>.
PEOPLE OF THE BOOK? [Helen Pearson, PRO, Newbold College]
About 400 people filled Newbold College's Salisbury Hall on Sabbath afternoon, 12 April. They were people of all ages and cultural backgrounds, people from off-campus and on, visitors from Kent and Kettering, from London, Watford, and further afield. They came to hear a discussion with the Adventist writer and speaker, Clifford Goldstein, who for 8 years has been the editor of the Adult Bible Study Guides used in Adventist Sabbath Schools around the world. Goldstein had spoken twice in the morning. In the Early Service he had talked about Daniel chapter 2 and, then, in the Family Service, he had told the story of his conversion from atheism to Adventism.
The Sabbath afternoon event, organised by Newbold's Centre for the Study of Religious and Cultural Diversity, had been advertised as a 'conversation' between Goldstein and some of Newbold's Biblical scholars on the topic: 'People of the Book or People of the Quarterly'. Since a conversation between four hundred people doesn't work too well, the moderator for the afternoon, Vice Principal Dr Michael Pearson decided on a question and answer session.
The questions ranged far and wide. There were questions about the choice of subjects and writers, including a question about the exclusion of contemporary issues like the environment. There were questions about communication in a variety of contexts, and the difficulties of meeting the needs of different people from different cultures at different stages in their spiritual journeys. Some asked whether the Bible study guides developed thinking and problem solving skills and others whether it was possible for the 'lessons' to be edited for local use in particular situations, for instance, in church plants.
The answers roamed as wide as the questions. Goldstein offered his audience a number of insights into the challenges of editing a unique body of work which is published in 100 languages and, almost by definition, fails to please all its readers. He assured his listeners a number of times that they should feel free to ask their own questions on assigned Sabbath School topics, "It's OK if you want to disagree with the quarterly. Jump off from the topic and explore it. It's just a guide," he said.
The following week, on Tuesday evening, about 170 people came to hear Clifford Goldstein give the Diversity Centre's April lecture: 'Seeing is Believing - or is it? Faith and the limits of empiricism'. This time, Goldstein, in philosophical mode, challenged the statement of the Nobel prize-winning author, Gunther Grass: "All I can know is what I can see and feel and touch and taste". Goldstein drew on the analogy of the mobile phone messages which are in the air but which we cannot hear without the appropriate receivers. He reminded his audience: "all we can know is the reality our receptors create for us," and challenged them to recognise and experience that 'revelation' can take believers further than the senses.
"It was fascinating over the time of Clifford's visit to see so many people so interested and enthusiastic about a variety of very serious issues," says Dr Pearson, Director of the Diversity Centre. "The key, I think, was Clifford's willingness to be honest about his own journey and to acknowledge the open-endedness of many of the questions we discussed."

FAREWELL TO ED AND SHANA SAMMONS [John Surridge, Welsh Mission President]
On Sunday, 13 April around one hundred members and friends gathered in a hall at Singleton Hospital, Swansea, to say farewell to Pastor Ed Sammons and his wife Shana. Just four days later they were on a plane to California.
Ed grew up in the Newport church and then returned to Wales as a minister after completing his studies at Newbold College. He began his ministry in September 2000, serving his internship with Pastor Geoff Dennis in the Swansea, Port Talbot and Carmarthen churches. After completing his internship Ed stayed on as the district minister and was ordained on Sabbath, 27 August 2005.
In addition to his pastoral duties Ed also took on the role of Welsh Mission Youth Sponsor - a role that made good use of his many talents and was well suited to his extrovert personality. Over the years he organised many youth programmes and events, and his skills in this area helped to bring many young people into a living relationship with Jesus.
Ed and Shana were loved and appreciated by the members in their district and by the youth throughout Wales. This appreciation was demonstrated at their farewell party through gifts, flowers, speeches, and a large cake! Mary Latchman, an elder of the Swansea church, spoke of how Ed and Shana had been adopted by the Swansea members and of how they had enjoyed watching them grow and develop over the years. Ed's ministry had also helped the church to grow and develop spiritually during that time.
Ed is now taking up a pastoral position in the Santa Barbara church in southern California. Although he and Shana will be missed, everyone's good wishes for the future go with them - especially as they are expecting their first baby this summer. There is no doubt that God will use them to bring a blessing to their new district just as He has done in Wales.
A number of pictures from Ed and Shana's leaving party can be seen in the gallery section of the Welsh Mission website at: <
www.adventistwales.org>.

CORE OF ADVENTISM TO HIT LONDON
"It is important for us to understand what we believe as a people," states Pastor Don McFarlane, President of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the UK and Ireland. In an online interview this week he expressed his joy in the teachings of the Adventist Church and their centre in "the magnificence of Jesus Christ". Introducing "The Core of Adventism", a series of seminars and evangelistic presentations to run in London 10 - 17 May, he stated, "I hope that our understanding of our core beliefs especially will be sharpened... We need to understand those doctrines that point towards Jesus as Creator, as Lord, as Saviour."
Pastor Eglan Brooks has been instrumental in putting together a programme with a range of top Adventist speakers from the UK and around the world. He says, "The Bible Conference will offer ministers and elders an opportunity to revisit some key theological issues as well as give some insight into new practical areas of ministry." He hopes that the event will help to "adjust the old paradigm for ministry". Pastor Brooks would like to pay tribute to the SEC President, Pastor Sam Davis, and the London Area 6 coordinators for facilitating this dynamic concept within the SEC.

She would love to stay with a family for about 3-6 weeks to practise English this summer and would willingly help with housework or anything needed.
