NEW PRINCIPAL AT NEWBOLD COLLEGE APPOINTED.[Newbold News/TED News
Staff/ TED News]

St Albans, England - On 11 May, the Newbold Board of Governors
appointed an American professor of political science as the College's
next principal. Since she earned her doctorate in 1999, Dr Jane Sabes
has been teaching on the campus of Newbold's sister institution,
Andrews University, in Berrien Springs, Michigan, where she has
researched and taught out of her particular interests in the
relationship between religion, politics, and human rights. She
recently received the 2008 Spiritual Life award in recognition of her
'ever-strong spiritual influence on students and colleagues alike'.
In 2005, she was voted 'Teacher of the Year'.

Dr Sabes brings the experience of an international curriculum vitae
to the job. She has served as director of health services for the
Seward Peninsula in Alaska, and has international work experience in
China, Libya, and Indonesia. In the 1990s, Dr Sabes worked as
Director of the Wyoming Department of Health, having a staff of 2,000
and managing a biennial budget of $600 million.

She has a broad experience of teaching and educational administration
and has worked in educational administration and curriculum planning
at both Kettering Medical Centre, Kettering, Ohio, and Clinical
Faculty at Wright State University, School of Medicine in Dayton,
Ohio.

Dr Sabes received her Bachelor of Science from Columbia Union College
in Takoma Park, MD, her Master's in Public Health from Loma Linda
University, CA, and a Master's in Public Administration from the
University of Wyoming. In 1999 she earned her doctorate in political
science with emphasis in international public policy and public
administration.

Dr Sabes succeeds Dr David Penner who resigned last February after
six years as principal. She is expected to visit the campus in June
and, subject to visa arrangements proceeding smoothly, will take up
her duties at the College in August. She will be the 29th principal
in Newbold's 107- year history, the 12th American, and the 2nd woman.

Dr Keith Mattingly, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at
Andrews University, describes Jane Sabes as an energetic woman of
many talents who combines tenderness of spirit with a clear calling
to accountability. 'She is,' he says, 'one of those who looks at
challenges and creates new and creative ways of doing things.'

On her appointment, Dr Jane Sabes said: "I have long known of the
excellent educational experiences afforded students at Newbold
College. And, I assume that my response in working with this group of
dedicated individuals will be similar to that of the Queen of Sheba
upon meeting King Solomon - that "not the half was told me." In
short, I consider this invitation to assume leadership duties at
Newbold to be the richest of blessings, both personally and
professionally."

Dr Bertil Wiklander, Chair of the Board of Governors said: "Jane
Sabes brings to her new leadership role a rare combination of gifts
which we believe will serve Newbold well. She combines an open
outlook on the world with a deep involvement in the life and witness
of the Church. We wish her and the Newbold staff well as they begin
this new and critical phase of the College's history."

SPRING MEETING HIGHLIGHTS...[TED Staff/TED News]

St Albans, England - The warm weather greeted the members of the
Trans-European Division (TED) as they met for meetings at Newbold
College Sunday 11 May, and continued at the TED on Monday and
Tuesday, as they transact the business of the Seventh-day Adventist
Church.

Monday began with a worship from a special visitor from the treasury
department of the World Church headquarters, Jose Lizardo. He
reminded his hearers how important it is for busy leaders to have a
growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

Tuesday worship was presented from a very different perspective, as
the Principal of Newbold College, Dr David Penner spoke about
leadership, highlighting some of the Biblical leaders who did not
conform to the received wisdom today about leadership.

A special presentation was made by TED President Dr Wiklander to Dr
Penner, who is stepping down as Principal at Newbold College, after
having served as such for six years. Dr Wiklander spoke about Dr
Penner's many qualities, and summed them up in two; "He has been one
of us, and has a genuine love for Newbold, its people and buildings".

Dr Penner will take up a position as Director of Leadership
Initiatives, School of Public Health at Loma Linda University,
California, in the autumn.

Outreach of several sorts was highlighted in different presentations.
Among these was Kids in Discipleship (KID), a Children's Ministries
Programme. Anne-May Wollan, TED Children's Ministries Director,
described how KID has grown enormously in the last year; already 33
churches across the Division territory have been trained in KID, in
12 major languages.

Relay Christ was presented giving plans for an exciting new venture.
This outreach initiative includes a number of key elements including
a far reaching plan for training and equipping youth that will
commence this summer; plans for an Arabic language TV ministry, and
an extension of the KID programme. Each project was spoken about with
enthusiasm by both directors and officers of the Division. To enable
this venture, an unprecedented 4.85 million US dollars budget was
voted unanimously from monies given by the World Church headquarters.
This visionary plan and budget forms a structured outreach preferred
future from now until 2012.

An integral youth initiative of this plan was explained by Pastor
Paul Tompkins, TED Youth Director. Known as Churches of Refuge, it
seeks to offer a church in which young people feel protected, valued
and involved. It mirrors the Biblical model of Deuteronomy chapter
19.

The TED Spring Meeting this year was closed with special prayer for
the two districts in the Division where political strife is a
problem.

IN THE MIDDLE OF UNREST AND SUFFERING...[TED News Staff/TED News]

Sudan/Lebanon - During this past week people in Lebanon and Sudan
have faced extraordinary challenges due to political unrest in their
region.

A violent attack launched by Darfur rebels on Omdurman, the capital
Khartoum's twin city across the Nile, on Saturday 10 May, was the
closest the rebels have come to Khartoum during five years of
fighting. Pastor Miroslav Didara, President of the Church in the
Sudan Field of the Adventist Church, reported thankfully that
although the city has not yet come back to normal, so far all church
members living in the affected area are safe.

From Lebanon, President of the Adventist Church in the Middle East,
Dr Kjell Aune, reports that there has been no news of Church members
being hurt, or their property being damaged following the recent
violent clashes in the conflict between Shiite and Sunni Muslim
groups centred in West Beirut, branching to the northern city of
Tripoli. Dr Aune commented: "In this country things tend to get back
to normal quite soon, even after clashes, bombs etc...People are used
to tension being part of life, and adjust back to normal rather fast
once the incidents are over...We are just praying that the present,
serious conflict will not develop beyond scattered incidents and turn
into an open, longer and wider conflict. Thanks to all for your
concern and prayer support."

Having in mind those people living in the disrupted areas of Sudan
and Lebanon, including people suffering the aftermath of the cyclone
in Burma and the victims of the earthquake in China, Pastor Harald
Wollan, Secretary of the Trans-European Division of the Adventist
Church, presents an appeal: "We invite the Church to unite in prayer
for all innocent peoples who suffer as a result of political unrest
or natural disasters."
