Club Adventist

Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do.
And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with
– even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department.
Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently. Romans 14.1: The Message

What is the purpose of the Sabbath?

Some Adventist say rest, and sleep all day, some say go to a concrete box which is called a church and then sleep at church, some say go and convert by passing out pamphlets and magazines and make it their salvation, and others truly understand the purpose of the Sabbath and God is pleased......

What is the Sabbath for, and do we understand its purpose.........

I don't see the Sabbath as having a single purpose but as having several purposes. I believe its primary purpose is to help us become more like God through gaining a greater knowledge of Him.

While there's nothing wrong with sleeping a while on the Sabbath, it would be a waste of time if that is how we use a large portion of it. I think we do well to take Christ as our pattern in Sabbath keeping.

The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.

I think that one reason that people tend to sleep either doing 'lay activities' at home or snore in concert is like asking...why don't we all like squash?

Some just haven't learned to appreciate the qualities of it.

Some have not experienced the full richness of what squash can be like with a lit' adventure tossed in.

Some have eaten so much squash that they are worn out on it.

Some have stressed out so much thru the week working hard or healing hard that they just don't have a good appetite when it is time to sit down and eat.

Back in the Garden, it was a relationship thing. God wanted to spend time with His new creation...US! He hasn't gotten tired of walks and talks cause He does it throughout the week. But when it comes to Sabbath, who is too tired, too worn out, too goal driven to 'do His will'? Well, it certainly isn't the Lord, is it?

I look forward to each Sabbath and if I had my way, it would be the day after as well. But life rears it's head. Gardens need to be planted, hoed, weeded. Fuel put into the car, groceries bought, clothes prepared.

But then, this is just my 2 cents worth.

My ideal Sabbath when I was younger with children around was to take hikes, picnics, look for people to help throughout the week. I'd never even allow time to have that day once a year to get some bug to cause me to sleep.
Now that there are no children around; I am only in this particular area for a short time, going week to week taking care of a patient, I return home from church and fellowship, feeling totally refreshed, even after a visit with my terminally ill step brother, to spend time listening to music of the spiritual nature and DVDs of past presentations.

I know, you find it upsetting to how some people and perhaps even me...are spending the Sabbath. BUT...until one walks in their shoes that matter is best left in His hands.

Right or Wrong?

I think the Sabbath is for improving relationships... This can be done with worship improving our relationship with God... Also improving our relationships with our family. My wife is leader of the Kindergarden SS Div. After her class is over we might worship at the church for the Worship service or we may go home and worship there. We eat lunch. Then if the weather cooperates we go to a county or National Park and take reading material with us. Or we might discuss what we have heard so far that day.

After reading walking and talking for 2 or 3 hours we go home and sometimes take a brief nap and / or listen watch religious programming on the TV. Having a close, romantic relationship with each other is big on our agenda as well as worshipping God.

Other times we just stay home and do things we do not get a chance to do the rest of the week. We don't believe staying at the church for hrs on end through out the whole day... We don't see that kind of activity reall observing the Sabbath.

The Sabbath is comparable to when you find someone special and you want to take them out so you set a time to spend together, so there are many ways to get to know each other, but the day is set....
