NEC SESSION ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT, TREASURER

The North England Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Constituency meeting in Scarborough Thursday, 26 - Sunday 29 June has elected new officers to lead the church in the North of England for the next four years. On Friday afternoon the delegates elected Pastor Ian Sweeney as president. Pastor Sweeney is currently serving in the Leeds area and is an effective preacher and evangelist. Commenting from the platform after his election he promised to work hard on behalf of the church, serving to the best of his ability. He replaces Pastor Egerton Francis who has served as a spiritual and effective leader for almost fourteen years. Pastor Francis is a well loved leader and received a standing ovation as he thanked God for the way he has been able to serve and lead the church.

Also new to office is Mr Rejoice Kampegnele, elected to serve as treasurer. Mr Kampegnele is currently serving in the General Conference Auditing Service based at the Trans-European Division office and is a member of the St Albans church. He replaces Mr Marcus Dove who chose these meetings as the time to step back from 37 faithful years of treasury work.

Pastor Paul Haworth was returned as Executive Secretary having come into office mid-term.

In his keynote address on Thursday evening, Pastor Don McFarlane, British Union Conference president told delegates, "Our hope must reach out to the community." Based his message on Isaiah's words in Isaiah 52:7-8, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news," he stated that, "this good news is not just something internal, something for us." He continued, "Our hope must be present truth to the community. If we do not reach 98% of the community we are not fulfilling present truth." By that, he explained, the good news must reach people where they are: in deprived communities, with students and with wealthy business people. While commending the church for continuing to use and develop the traditional forms of evangelism he challenged delegates that they must also "allow and support evangelistic methods that are non-traditional." Stating that while he, himself is a traditionalist he emphasised to churches that they must give responsibility to young people. "They speak the language of the wider society," he said. "They can reach them because they understand them." He also expressed the need for our community programmes to expand, but most of all that we become a compassionate church. "We have been very strong on justice," he stated, "but what makes God the being He is is the combination of justice and mercy."

Reports, committees and elections will continue through to Sunday afternoon and a fuller report will appear in next weeks BUC news with a complete report in an upcoming edition of the Messenger.

FIRE-HIT CHURCH TO RE-OPEN

A church that was damaged by fire last year is to have its re-opening ceremony this weekend. A children's room at the Seventh-day Adventist church in Micklefield was gutted by an arson attack on Saturday, 21 April last year.

Arsonists struck at the church in High Wycombe destroying the children's room at the back of the church and leaving the building unusable for worship. At the time of the attack former pastor, Michael Anim told BUC News that when church members surveyed the damage to their building they joined hands and prayed for forgiveness and a change of heart for those involved in the attack. Since then the members have developed close links with the Elim Pentecostal Church situated next door and have met there for the last year. Now they look forward to returning home this Sabbath.

Pastor Robert Hines is now pastor of the two Adventist churches in High Wycombe and is delighted at the re-opening of his church. "The repairs took longer than expected," he said, "due to the presence of asbestos. However, the church has taken this opportunity to totally refurbish the entire building and it is now greatly improved with new fixtures and fittings, disabled toilets and modern IT and PA."

The opening ceremony with the Deputy Mayor of High Wycombe Cllr Ms Julie Pritchard will take place between 11.00 and 11.30 am at the church in Centre Approach, Micklefield, High Wycombe this Sabbath, 28 June.

Members are still concerned for the youth in the area. They have dedicated Sabbath afternoons to working with the community in their youth centres, community projects and in their homes. "Micklefield is an area that has numerous social needs," Pastor Hines says. As a result the church has been approached by Wycombe District Council to become involved in the Oasis Project. This provides skill training, mentoring and numeracy and English skills to young people. The project is funded through the adult education budget and has already been very successful in other areas of Wycombe. "This fits in with the church mission statement," Pastor Hines says, as we "aim to be a catalyst for positive change in Micklefield and Wycombe in all areas of life." The church is aiming to involve members in using their talents and skills in a community based project by the end of the summer.

NEWBOLD STUDENTS LAUNCH STUDENT HARDSHIP FUND [Tabitha Cedenio]

With the introduction of fees and the removal of the grant system all students feel the pinch going off to university. Students who decide that a Christian education is important and choose Newbold College, Bracknell, will be pleased to know that the students have worked together with the support of the College to set up a Student Hardship Fund.

The Student Hardship Fund has taken its inspiration from other universities which have such a fund to help students in need to meet the day to day cost of living. Newbold, as with other institutions, would like to support their students in their studies and therefore have supported them under the umbrella of the NSA (Newbold Student Association) in developing this fund for Newbold students.

South England Conference Camp Meeting 2008 saw the students launch this fund and set up shop for the fundraising activities to begin. Winsome Brown-Baadjes arrived at Newbold in January and no sooner had she arrived than she was harnessing the power of the students and motivating them on this project. She joined with Newbold Students Carole Williams, Sherri-Lee Galloway, and Yasmina Herinirina along with Evie Reynolds a student herself up north but a part of the Newbold community. They went to Camp Meeting to represent and promote the college and launch the Student Hardship Fund. They worked hard all week selling T-shirts, scripture candy, key rings and Newbold merchandise raising £1000 for the Hardship Fund.

If you would like to contribute to the Newbold Student Hardship Fund or would like Newbold students to visit your church or event then please contact Tabitha Cedenio, Communication Coordinator on 01344 407492 or email <tcedenio@newbold.ac.uk>.

MICROCHIP SUCCESS AT BURY ST EDMUNDS

The Bury St Edmunds church along with some members of the Ipswich church completed their first eight session MicroCHIP course recently. The Coronary Health Improvement Programme (CHIP), conducted by Cambridge and Bury pastor, Claude Lombart, saw the group learning and sharing - particularly the mini-meals they prepared for each other. Pastor Lombart reports that the comments were all positive: "It got me exercising." "I know more about the diabetic condition and how to avoid it." "I discovered how important it is to have enough sleep and especially before midnight." "I feel better all round." "I lost weight." The attendees became so enthused with the lifestyle change programme that they have decided to help launch the first ever full 30 day CHIP programme in the church this autumn. Having experienced CHIP for themselves they want to give the residents of Bury St Edmunds a real boost leading up to Christmas.

"ASK THE PRESIDENT" NOW ONLINE

"What chance have girls in the Adventist church got to marry and Adventist husband?" This was just one of the questions posed to Pastor Don McFarlane, President of the Seventh-day Adventist church in the UK and Ireland in a special "Ask the President" forum. Members of the church in Scotland dialogued with him on a range of topics including media ridicule of Christians, sexual ethics and how to grow a church in isolated communities. Now the programme - and the answers to these difficult questions - are available for you to watch. This special web-only edition of "Ask the President" is available for viewing and download from the Hope TV-UK website, <www.hopetv.org.uk>.

DEATH OF PASTOR DAVID SPEARING

It is with a deep sense of sadness and loss that the church family has learnt of the untimely and sudden death of Pastor David Spearing. Pastor Spearing had been suffering from severe depression. This is a serious illness which can sometimes result in tragic consequences. Sadly the illness caused an altered state of mind which resulted in Pastor Spearing taking his life early on Monday, 23 June. There will be an inquest with a toxicology report. It is important to stress that Pastor Spearing was not himself due to the state of his mind. Anyone who knew Pastor Spearing will attest to his zest for life and his commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his loving and devoted wife, Lillian, his parents Otti and Tony, his brother Robin and his sister Sylvia. We would appeal to the community to respect the privacy of the family and the memory of Pastor Spearing by recognising that he was a devoted man of God who sadly succumbed to a severe medical condition.

"Pastor Dave was more ill than any of us had realised and this illness resulted in his death," says SEC President Pastor Sam Davis, a long time friend of Pastor Spearing. He continues, "We look forward to the blessed hope of the Second Coming when Pastor Dave, along with all who have fallen asleep in Jesus will hear the voice of the Life Giver and come forth never to die again."

Pastor Spearing was serving as pastor of the Swindon and Cheltenham district of churches. It is our prayer that the God of all comfort will draw near at this time of sadness and loss.
