Saudi king urges consumers to get used to high oil prices "We have nothing to do with the current sharp increase in crude prices," he said reiterating the Saudi position that speculation, rising demand and the taxation of oil products in consumer countries were to blame.
"These countries must reduce their taxes on fuel.. if they want to contribute to easing the burden on ordinary consumers," he said. I think in the US we are paying about 18 cents per gallon federal tax and in Texas it is 38 cents per gallon added to the federal tax. California is charging 64 cents per gallon. So it is not even a dollar in taxes.

I suspect he was probably thinking of Europe, where the taxes are *much* higher, the prices higher and the taxes a much larger share of the price.

After crude oil costs, taxes are the second largest contributor to the price paid at the pump. Together Federal and State excise taxes on fuel account for an average cost of approximately 62 cents per gallon.
Here is what we pay in Oregon As of 1 July, 2008 Oregon: gas: 43.4 cpg. diesel: 48.7 cpg. Biodiesel dispensed into motor vehicles: 24 cpg. Additional optional county gasoline (ranging from 1 to 3 cpg) and city gasoline and diesel taxes (ranging from 1 to 5 cpg). Propane and CNG are taxed by some weird math calculations I won't go into. As of Sept, 2007 The county I live in taxes $.03 per gallon I thought this was interesting. Oregon only taxes jet fuel @ $.01 per gallon. The last time jet fuel rates were increased was Oct 1999.

oh and just for kicks and giggles. Alaska pays the lowest gas tax @ 26.4 cpg and California the highest @ 63.9 cpg.

Here in NSW Australia we are paying the equivalent of $1.45 a US Gallon in fuel excises. (Actually $0.38143 per litre of which there are 3.786 litres per US gallon.) Our unleaded fuel is about $1.70 per litre here in NSW which is around $6.43 per US gallon. About time we had a cut in these excises to reduce the cost of fuel.
