Overall Question - How should Isaiah's view of his mission affect our view as Adventists of our mission?
Isaiah 6:8 NKJV “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: "Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me."”
Sunday – Woe Is Me Isaiah 6:1-6 CEV “1 ¶ In the year that King Uzziah died, I had a vision of the LORD. He was on his throne high above, and his robe filled the temple. 2 Flaming creatures with six wings each were flying over him. They covered their faces with two of their wings and their bodies with two more. They used the other two wings for flying, 3 as they shouted, "Holy, holy, holy, LORD All-Powerful! The earth is filled with your glory." 4 As they shouted, the doorposts of the temple shook, and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 ¶ Then I cried out, "I’m doomed! Everything I say is sinful, and so are the words of everyone around me. Yet I have seen the King, the LORD All-Powerful." 6 One of the flaming creatures flew over to me with a burning coal that it had taken from the altar with a pair of metal tongs.” Isaiah 6:5 COMMENTARY BY MATTHEW HENRY The best men in the world have reason to be ashamed of themselves, and the best of their services, when they come into comparison with the holy angels. The angels had celebrated the purity and holiness of God; and therefore the prophet, when he reflects upon sin, calls it uncleanness; for the sinfulness of sin is its contrariety to the holy nature of God, and upon that account especially it should appear both hateful and frightful to us. The impurity of our lips ought to be the grief of our souls, for by our words we shall be justified or condemned. Isaiah 6:5 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY This vision of God in His holiness and glory gave Isaiah a conception of the sinfulness and insignificance of man. Looking upon God and then upon himself, he realized his own nothingness in comparison with the Eternal, his guilt in the presence of the “Holy One of Israel. Reactions of Other Who Saw God Exodus 20:18-19 CEV “18 ¶ The people trembled with fear when they heard the thunder and the trumpet and saw the lightning and the smoke coming from the mountain. They stood a long way off 19 and said to Moses, "If you speak to us, we will listen. But don’t let God speak to us, or we will die!"” Judges 13:22 CEV “Manoah said, "We have seen an angel. Now we’re going to die."” Job 42:5-6 KJ21 “5 I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear, but now mine eye seeth Thee. 6 Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes."” Revelation 1:17 KJ21 “And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. And He laid His right hand upon me, saying unto me, "Fear not; I am the First and the Last.” Revelation 1:17 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES He was overwhelmed with the suddenness of the vision; he saw that this was a Divine being; but he did not as yet know that it was the Saviour. It is not probable that in this vision he would immediately recognize any of the familiar features of the Lord Jesus as he had been accustomed to see him some sixty years before.
Monday – Thy Sin Is Purged Isaiah 6:5 KJV “Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.” Proverbs 13:3 BBE “He who keeps a watch on his mouth keeps his life; but he whose lips are open wide will have destruction.” Matthew 12:37 BBE “For by your words will your righteousness be seen, and by your words you will be judged.” Luke 6:45 BBE “The good man, out of the good store of his heart, gives good things; and the evil man, out of his evil store, gives evil: for out of the full store of the heart come the words of the mouth.” Isaiah 6:6-7 KJV “6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: 7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.” Isaiah 6:6 COMMENTARY BY JAMIESON, FAUSSET, AND BROWN live coal--literally, "a hot stone," used, as in some countries in our days, to roast meat with, for example, the meat of the sacrifices. Fire was a symbol of purification, as it takes the dross out of metals (Mal 3:2,3). Isaiah 6:7 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY The coal from the altar represented the purifying and refining power of divine grace. It signified, as well, as transformation of character. Henceforth the one great desire of Isaiah for his people was that they too might experience the same work of cleansing and transformation. Our greatest need today is for lips touched with holy fire from the altar of God.
Tuesday – Here Am I Send Me Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV “18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.” Matthew 28:19 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY This commission is sometimes referred to as the “charter of foreign missions.” Christianity was the first religion to assume a truly international character. Pagan religions were largely devoid of missionary zeal and activity. They were primarily national in character and did not set out to make converts of other national groups. The gospel commission effectively eliminates national boundaries, and men of all nations find themselves members of one great brotherhood… Christianity effectively destroys all barriers of race, nationality, society, economics, and social custom. Christianity depends for success on its disentanglement from all national peculiarities, forms of government, social institutions, and everything of a purely local character. Matthew 28:19 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES Because all power is mine, go. I can defend you. The world is placed under my control. It is redeemed. It is given me in promise by my Father, as the purchase of my death. Though you are weak, yet I am strong. Though you will encounter many troubles and dangers, yet I can defend you.
Wednesday – Isaiah’s Call or Commission Isaiah 6:9-10 God’s Word to the Nations “9 ¶ And he said, "Go and tell these people, ‘No matter how closely you listen, you’ll never understand. No matter how closely you look, you’ll never see.’ 10 Make these people close–minded. Plug their ears. Shut their eyes. Otherwise, they may see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their minds, and return and be healed."” Isaiah 6:9 COMMENTARY BY MATTHEW HENRY God takes Isaiah at his word, and here sends him on a strange errand--to foretell the ruin of his people and even to ripen them for that ruin--to preach that which, by their abuse of it, would be to them a savour of death unto death. Isaiah 6:10 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY In the days of Isaiah it was not the Lord who blinded the eyes of the people or made their heart heavy; they brought this condition upon themselves by their rejection of the warnings God sent them. With each rejection of truth the heart becomes harder and the spiritual perceptions more dull, until at length there is utter inability to perceive spiritual things. Deuteronomy 30:6 Holman “The LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love Him with all your heart and all your soul, so that you will live.” Proverbs 2:6 Holman “then you will understand the fear of the LORD and discover the knowledge of God.” Jeremiah 3:22 Holman “Return, you faithless children. I will heal your unfaithfulness. “Here we are, coming to You, for You are the LORD our God.” Jeremiah 4:1 Holman “If you return, Israel — this is the LORD’s declaration — if you return to Me, if you remove your detestable idols from My presence and do not waver.”
Thursday – A Light to the Gentiles Revelation 14:6 KJ21 “And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting Gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation and kindred, and tongue and people,” Isaiah 42:6-7 NRSV “6 I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.” Isaiah 49:6 NKJV “Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’"” SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY, Vol. 4, p. 27 – “God placed His people in Palestine, the crossroads of the ancient world, and provided them with every facility for becoming the greatest nation on the face of the earth. It was His purpose to set them “on high above all nations of the earth”, with the result that “all people of the earth” would recognize their superiority and call them “blessed”. Unparalleled prosperity, both temporal and spiritual, was promised them as the reward for putting into practice the righteous and wise principles of heaven. It was to be the result of wholehearted cooperation with the will of God as revealed through the prophets, and of divine blessing added to human efforts…As the nations of antiquity should behold Israel’s unprecedented progress, their attention and interest would be aroused… Desiring the same blessings for themselves, they would make inquiry as to how they too might acquire these obvious material advantages. Israel would reply, “Accept our God as your God, love and serve Him as we do, and He will do the same for you.” … All nations of earth were to share in the blessings so generously bestowed upon Israel."
Friday – Further Study Ellen White, Prophets and Kings, p. 308 – “His [Isaiah’s] burden of soul in behalf of erring Judah was not to be borne in vain. His mission was not to be wholly fruitless. Yet the evils that had been multiplying for many generations could not be removed in his day. Throughout his lifetime he must be a patient, courageous teacher--a prophet of hope as well as of doom. The divine purpose finally accomplished, the full fruitage of his efforts, and of the labors of all God’s faithful messengers, would appear. A remnant should be saved.” Ellen White, Prophets and Kings, p. 309 – “The heavy judgments that were to befall the impenitent, --war, exile, oppression, the loss of power and prestige among the nations,--all these were to come in order that those who would recognize in them the hand of an offended God might be led to repent. The ten tribes of the northern kingdom were soon to be scattered among the nations and their cities left desolate; the destroying armies of hostile nations were to sweep over their land again and again; even Jerusalem was finally to fall, and Judah was to be carried away captive; yet the Promised Land was not to remain wholly forsaken forever.” Ellen White, Prophets and Kings, p. 310 – “This assurance of the final fulfillment of God’s purpose brought courage to the heart of Isaiah. What though earthly powers array themselves against Judah? What though the Lord’s messenger meet with opposition and resistance? Isaiah had seen the King, the Lord of hosts…; and the prophet was nerved for the work before him.”
