I never thought I'd quote the infamous PZ Myers here, but I suppose there may be a first time for many things.

In recent post at Pharyngula, Myers wrote an excellent sample response to the question "Do you believe in evolution?":

Quote:
Yes, I believe evolution is true.
I consider it the best explanation of the origin and diversity of life on earth,
and it is backed by an immense body of evidence. Strictly speaking,
it is not a matter of belief, but a recognition of the knowledge
of qualified experts and a familiarity with the research
that has been done in the field; I would also
add that science does not deal in absolute
truth, but strives for approximations,
and is always willing to discard old
ideas if better explanations
with better evidence
come along.
Do you have evidence for an alternative theory?

I've been guilty of the "No, I don't believe in evolution" pedantry he refers to later in his post, but I can't even claim to know all that much about how evolution works. Like the scientists, I'm still learning.

For the record, I am not accusing anyone here of pedantry. Bravus does an excellent job of explaining science in layman's terms. I often learn from him.

I don't believe in evolution because I just don't have that much faith. I believe in the Word of the living God. He is the one that spoke to the storm and it stood still. Wow! When He did that His disciples exclaimed, 'What manner of Man is this that even the winds and the seas obey Him!' This is the One that spoke to the dead and they came to life. This is the One that died and brought Himself back from the dead! When He says He created the world in six days, I don't doubt it. When He says He flooded the world and all life perished, I believe Him. When a scientist comes along and says it couldn't have happened that way,,, well, they weren't in the boat the night He spoke to the storm. What do they know? Really?

Amen! Post-Modernism says that there are no absolutes. What a way to live life. I am glad that we can anchor our beliefs in the Bible regardless of the shifting sands of science, politics, and political correctness.

We have a choice -- take the word of men who can only propose a new unproved way of looking at things -- or we can take the word of God that has stood the test of time.

"I know Whom I have believed!"

My closest and best friend is a post-modern. He doesn't know what to believe when it comes to religion or God or morality. Basically anything goes sexually. No compass.

He has no real interest in religion or morality as such because he doesn't think we can really know anything outside of our subjective experience. It means that he has no interest in anything or anyone if it doesn't affect him personally.

Sad way to live life. We've been close ever since college in 1971. Our common interests are art and photography. We seldom talk about the Bible or God because to him God-talk or talking about the Bible or abstract ideas are a waste of time. He's essentially a nihilist.

He has no solid belief in either the origin of the world or in what happens to people when they die. He's been listening to Richard Dawkins' books. Years ago he used to read the Bible.

bwink Thank ya ma'am.

From memory it was something like:

But you guys are ALL missing the interpretation step. I'm completely fine with trusting God's word, it's man's understanding of God's word that I have trouble with.

John - nihilism is one possible response, but not the only one.
