Overall Question: When and how did Satan begin his work of rebellion?

Colossians 1:17 NIV “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Sunday – The Origin of Sin
Ezekiel 28:14-17 KJ21 “14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth, and I have set thee so; thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. 16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned; therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God; and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty; thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness. I will cast thee to the ground; I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.”
Ellen White, Desire of Ages, p. 758 – “Lucifer had been the covering cherub. He had stood in the light of God’s presence. He had been the highest of all created beings, and had been foremost in revealing God’s purposes to the universe. After he had sinned, his power to deceive was the more deceptive, and the unveiling of his character was the more difficult, because of the exalted position he had held with the Father.”
Ellen White, Great Controversy, p. 492 – “It is impossible to explain the origin of sin so as to give a reason for its existence. Yet enough may be understood concerning both the origin and the final disposition of sin to make fully manifest the justice and benevolence of God in all His dealings with evil. Nothing is more plainly taught in Scripture than that God was in no wise responsible for the entrance of sin; that there was no arbitrary withdrawal of divine grace, no deficiency in the divine government, that gave occasion for the uprising of rebellion. Sin is an intruder, for whose presence no reason can be given. It is mysterious, unaccountable; to excuse it is to defend it.”

Monday – Attack on God
Isaiah 14:13-14 MKJV “13 For you have said in your heart, I will go up to the heavens, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. 14 I will go up above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.”
Isaiah 14:13 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY The “king of Babylon” was a heathen, and in heathen mythology the gods held their council meetings on a high mountain, where they determined the affairs of earth. The literal “king of Babylon” would thus presume to usurp the control of the gods—that is, supreme authority—over the affairs of earth. As king of mystical Babylon Satan would similarly aspire to control the councils of heaven, that is, to rule the universe of God.
Isaiah 14:14 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY Lucifer aspired to be like God in position, power, and glory, but not in character. He desired for himself the homage the angelic host gave to God. Only a created being, he sought honor due alone to the Creator. Instead of seeking to make God supreme in the affections of the angelic host, he sought for himself first place in those affections.
Genesis 3:4-5 ESV “4 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."”
Genesis 3:5 COMMENTARY BY ADAM CLARKE the object of the tempter appears to have been this: to persuade our first parents that they should, by eating of this fruit, become wise and powerful as God, (for knowledge is power,) and be able to exist for ever, independently of him.

Tuesday – Sin and the Law of God
Link Between God’s love and His Law
Matthew 22:37-40 NRSV “37 He said to him, "’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."”
John 3:16 NRSV “"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”
John 14:15 NRSV “"If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
John 14:15 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY Love is the motive power of obedience. Obedience that springs from compulsion or from fear is not the ideal form of obedience. There may be times, of course, where the motive power of love is lacking or weak. It is necessary under those circumstances to render obedience from principle alone. In the meantime love should be cultivated. A lack of the requisite love should never be made an excuse for disobedience. One of the best human illustrations of obedience that springs from love is that of children to their parents.
John 14:21 NRSV “They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them."”
John 14:21 PEOPLE’S NT COMMENTARY He that hath my commandments, etc. The conditions on which Christ will be present in each soul, seen, and enjoyed, are here given: (1) One must love Christ; (2) so love him that he will obey from the heart his commandments; (3) this loving, obedient soul will be loved of the Father; (4) Christ will love him; (5) both the Father and the Son will manifest themselves to him; (6) this manifestation is by their coming and abiding in him through the Helper.
1 John 5:3 NRSV “For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome,”
1 John 5:3 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES It is easy to obey God when the heart is right; and those who endeavour in sincerity to keep his commandments do not complain that they are hard. All complaints of this kind come from those who are not disposed to keep his commandments. They, indeed, object that his laws are unreasonable; that they impose improper restraints; that they are not easily complied with; and that the Divine government is one of severity and injustice. But no such complaints come from true Christians.
God’s Command to Adam and Eve
Genesis 2:17 CEV “except the one that has the power to let you know the difference between right and wrong. If you eat any fruit from that tree, you will die before the day is over!"”
Genesis 3:4-5 CEV “4 "No, you won’t!" the snake replied. 5 "God understands what will happen on the day you eat fruit from that tree. You will see what you have done, and you will know the difference between right and wrong, just as God does."”
Genesis 3:4 COMMENTARY FAMILY BIBLE NOTES Satan tries to make men disbelieve God's declarations, in order to lead them to break his commands. Liars resemble Satan, do his work, and will partake of his torment.

Wednesday – Sin As Rebellion Against God’s Government
Colossians 1:16-17 God’s Word to the Nations “16 He created all things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. Whether they are kings or lords, rulers or powers–– everything has been created through him and for him. 17 He existed before everything and holds everything together.”
Job 1:8-11 God’s Word to the Nations “8 The LORD asked Satan, "Have you thought about my servant Job? No one in the world is like him! He is a man of integrity: He is decent, he fears God, and he stays away from evil." 9 Satan answered the LORD, "Haven’t you given Job a reason to fear God? 10 Haven’t you put a protective fence around him, his home, and everything he has? You have blessed everything he does. His cattle have spread out over the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand, and strike everything he has. I bet he’ll curse you to your face."”

Thursday – War in Heaven
Ezekiel 28:16 NKJV “"By the abundance of your trading You became filled with violence within, And you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thing Out of the mountain of God; And I destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the fiery stones.”
Ezekiel 28:16 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY The imagery is drawn from the trade of Tyre. The figure of the king of Tyre is not lost. Lucifer’s nefarious work of disseminating rebellion in heaven is compared to the avaricious and often dishonest trade of Tyre.
Ellen White, Spiritual Gifts, Book 3, p. 36 – “Before the fall of Satan, the Father consulted his Son in regard to the formation of man. They purposed to make this world, and create beasts and living things upon it, and to make man in the image of God, to reign as a ruling monarch over every living thing which God should create. When Satan learned the purpose of God, he was envious at Christ, and jealous because the Father had not consulted him in regard to the creation of man. Satan was of the highest order of angels; but Christ was above all. He was the commander of all Heaven. He imparted to the angelic family the high commands of his Father. The envy and jealousy of Satan increased. Until his rebellion all Heaven was in harmony, and perfect subjection to the government of God. Satan commenced to insinuate his dissatisfied feelings to other angels, and a number agreed to aid him in his rebellion.”
Revelation 12:7-9 KJ21 “7 And there was war in Heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in Heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out—that serpent of old called the Devil and Satan, who deceiveth the whole world. He was cast out onto the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

Ellen White, Spiritual Gifts, Book 3, pp. 36-38 note the steps in Satan’s rebellion and expulsion from heaven:
1. Subtle whispering - p. 36 – “He desires, yet dare not at once venture to make known his envious, hateful feelings. But he contents himself with gaining all he can to sympathize with him, as though deeply wronged. He relates to them his thoughts of warring against Jehovah.”
2. Satan Meets Opposition – p. 37 – “While some of the angels joined Satan in his rebellion, others reasoned with him to dissuade him from his purposes, contending for the honor and wisdom of God in giving authority to his Son. “
3. God Checks Each Individual Angel’s Case – p. 37 – “At length all the angels are summoned to appear before the Father, to have each case decided. Satan unblushingly makes known to all the heavenly family, his discontent, that Christ should be preferred before him, to be in such close conference with God, and he be uninformed as to the result of their frequent consultations.”
4. Open rebellion before God – p. 38 – “Satan boldly speaks out his rebellion, and points to a large company who think God is unjust in not exalting him to be equal with God, and in not giving him command above Christ. He declares he cannot submit to be under Christ’s command, that God’s commands alone will he obey.”
5. God gives judgment against Satan – p. 38 – “The Father decides the case of Satan, and declares that he must be turned out of Heaven for his daring rebellion, and that all those who united with him in his rebellion, should be turned out with him. Then there was war in Heaven.”
6. War in heaven – p. 38 – “Christ and his angels fought against Satan and his angels, for they were determined to remain in Heaven with all their rebellion. But they prevailed not. Christ and loyal angels triumphed, and drove Satan and his rebel sympathizers from Heaven.”
