Club Adventist
Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do.
And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with
– even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department.
Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently. Romans 14.1: The Message

If it would help, here are the texts (and a little from commentators) for this week's lesson (I do this every week for myself and others in the church who find it convenient):

Memory Text: Luke 24:5-6 KJV “Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen.”

Sunday, February 20 Precursors

Matthew 11:5 KJ21 “the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up and the poor have the Gospel preached to them.”
Mark 5:35-43 KJ21 “35 ¶ While He yet spoke, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain ones who said, "Thy daughter is dead; why troublest thou the master any further?" 36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that had been spoken, He said unto the ruler of the synagogue, "Be not afraid; only believe." 37 And He suffered no man to follow Him, save Peter and James and John, the brother of James. 38 And He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw the tumult and those who wept and wailed greatly. 39 And when He had come in, He said unto them, "Why make ye this ado and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleepeth." 40 And they laughed Him to scorn. But when He had put them all out, He took the father and the mother of the damsel and those who were with Him, and entered in where the damsel was lying. 41 And He took the damsel by the hand and said unto her, "Talitha cumi," which is, being interpreted, "Damsel, I say unto thee, arise." 42 And straightway the damsel arose and walked, for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. 43 And He charged them strictly that no man should know about it, and commanded that something should be given her to eat.”
Luke 7:11-17 KJ21 “11 ¶ And it came to pass the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and many people. 12 Now when He came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And many people of the city were with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said unto her, "Weep not." 14 And He came and touched the bier, and those who bore him stood still. And He said, "Young man, I say unto thee, arise." 15 And he that was dead sat up and began to speak. And He delivered him to his mother. 16 And there came a fear on all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet is risen up among us"; and, "God hath visited His people." 17 And this report of Him went forth throughout all Judea and throughout all the region round about.”
John 11:1-46 KJ21 (selected portions) “1 ¶ Now a certain man was sick named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom Thou lovest is sick." 17 ¶ Then when Jesus came, He found that he had lain in the grave four days already. 18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about two miles away, 19 and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother. 20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him; but Mary sat still in the house. 21 Then Martha said unto Jesus, "Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that even now, whatsoever Thou wilt ask of God, God will give it Thee." 23 Jesus said unto her, "Thy brother shall rise again." 24 Martha said unto Him, "I know that he shall rise again at the resurrection on the Last Day." 25 Jesus said unto her, "I am the Resurrection and the Life. He that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; 26 and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believest thou this?" 27 She said unto Him, "Yea, Lord, I believe that Thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world." 28 And when she had so said, she went her way and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, "The Master has come, and calleth for thee." 32 Then when Mary had come where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying unto Him, "Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died." 33 ¶ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled, 34 and said, "Where have ye laid him?" They said unto Him, "Lord, come and see." 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then said the Jews, "Behold, how he loved him!" 37 And some of them said, "Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?" 38 Jesus therefore again, groaning in Himself, came to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, "Take ye away the stone." Martha, the sister of him that was dead, said unto Him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he hath been dead four days." 40 Jesus said unto her, "Said I not unto thee that if thou would believe, thou should see the glory of God?" 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard Me. 42 And I knew that Thou hearest Me always, but because of the people who stand by I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent Me." 43 And when He thus had spoken, He cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!" 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, "Loose him, and let him go."

Monday, February 21 The Resurrected Christ

Matthew 28:9 God’s Word “Suddenly, Jesus met them and greeted them. They went up to him, bowed down to worship him, and took hold of his feet.”
Luke 24:33-49 MKJV “33 And they rose up the same hour and returned to Jerusalem and found assembled the Eleven and those with them. 34 And they said, the Lord has indeed risen, and has appeared to Simon. 35 And they told what things [had happened] in the way, and how He had been known by them in breaking of the loaf. 36 ¶ And as they spoke this, Jesus Himself stood in their midst, and said to them, Peace to you! 37 But they were terrified and filled with fear, for they thought they saw a spirit. 38 And He said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold My hands and My feet, that I am He! Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see Me have. 40 And when He had spoken this, He showed them [His] hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe for joy, and wondered, He said to them, Have you any food here? 42 And they handed to Him a piece of a broiled fish and of a honeycomb. 43 And He took [it] and ate before them. 44 And He said to them, These [are] the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses and in the Prophets and [in] the Psalms about Me. 45 And He opened their mind to understand the Scriptures. 46 And He said to them, So it is written, and so it behoved Christ to suffer and to rise from [the] dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be proclaimed in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I send the promise of My father on you. But you sit in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.”
John 20:10-23 MKJV “10 Then the disciples went away again to themselves. 11 ¶ But Mary stood outside of the tomb, weeping. And as she wept, she stooped down into the tomb. 12 And [she] saw two angels in white sitting there, the one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 And they said to her, Woman, why do you weep? She said to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him. 14 And when she had said this, she turned backward and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek? Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, Sir, if you have carried Him away from here, tell me where you have laid Him and I will take Him away. 16 Jesus said to her, Mary! She turned herself and said to Him, Rabboni! (which is to say, Master!) 17 Jesus said to her, Do not touch Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father. But go to My brothers and say to them, I ascend to My Father and Your Father, and [to] My God and your God. 18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that He had spoken these things to her. 19 ¶ Then the same day at evening, being the first [day] of the sabbaths, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, Peace to you! 20 And when He had said this, He showed them [His] hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Then Jesus said to them again, Peace to you. As [My] Father has sent Me, even so I send you. 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on [them] and said to them, Receive [the] Holy Spirit. 23 Of whomever sins you remit, they are remitted to them. Of whomever [sins] you retain, they are retained.”
John 21:1-14 NKJV “1 ¶ After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed [Himself]: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the [sons] of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any food?" They answered Him, "No." 6 And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find [some]." So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on [his] outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. 9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught." 11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, "Come [and] eat breakfast." Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?" ——knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. 14 This [is] now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.”
Acts 1:4-9 NRSV “4 While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. "This," he said, "is what you have heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." 6 ¶ So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 9 When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.”

Tuesday, February 22 Witnesses From the Grave

Matthew 27:52-53 Weymouth “52 the tombs opened; and many of God’s people who were asleep in death awoke. 53 And coming out of their tombs after Christ’s resurrection they entered the holy city and showed themselves to many.”

Wednesday, February 23 Paul and the Resurrection of Jesus

1 Corinthians 15:3-8 ESV “3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.”

Thursday, February 24 Resurrection, Now and Then

John 5:24-25 ASV “24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live.”
Romans 6:4-6 Darby “4 We have been buried therefore with him by baptism unto death, in order that, even as Christ has been raised up from among [the] dead by the glory of the Father, so *we* also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we are become identified with [him] in the likeness of his death, so also we shall be of [his] resurrection; 6 knowing this, that our old man has been crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be annulled, that we should no longer serve sin.”

SDA BIBLE DICTIONARY, article “Resurrection” – “It was the certainty of Christ’s resurrection that brought point and power to the preaching of the gospel. Peter speaks of “the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” as producing a “lively hope” in believers. It was their [the apostles] personal knowledge of “the resurrection of the Lord Jesus” that gave “great power” to their witness).”
