However, nether probably describes a mineral alkali known as natron, found in abundance in Egypt. It is composed largely of bicarbonate of soda and was used for washing (Jer 2:22; RSV, "lye"). The use of natron with vinegar is as inappropriate and wasteful as the singing of merry songs to one who has a heavy heart, for the chemical reaction between the 2 yields a salt that has the qualities of neither of the 2 original substances (Prov 25:20; the RSV following the LXX has the rendering "wound," assuming that netheq should be read instead of nether).

Imagine only 10 days. But I'm thinking that they already were on this diet from when they came. But from what I understand it took they about 3-4 months to walk from Judah to Babylon, and they probably were not fed very well on the way. So the King figured that on his food they would be revidalized. But Daniel and his buddies wouldn't go for that and ate good food and since they already were pretty fit they were able to look and perk up better than the others. So it does pay to eat your veges. :)

Interesting about that sweating. I guess the point was to avoid wool. Linen was not like to CAUSE sweating. That does not mean that they did not sweat at all. I lived in Yuma Arizona in my teen years. (I haven't found a hot place since!)

In the summer time, we wore the minimum of clothing. Still, you could hold your arm out and the sweat would run in a steady stream from your elbow. Those were the days of hanging wash on the clothes line. We needed only ONE clothesline. By the time the clothes were hung on the one line; they were already dry at the beginning of the line.

We attended the small SDA church, maybe 40-50 people. Yet we had a grade school of 17 students. It did not take long to learn the "Yuma salute" in church. When you stood up to sing, you had to reach around and pull your sweaty clothes off your back!

Those were the days. Believe it or not, I miss Yuma!

In my KJV Bible, it is Junia (not Junias). Also, Andronicus was apparently the name of a Roman general, who may have become emperor. You have to be clear that was not Androcles who pulled the thorn from the paw of the lion -- and was in turn saved by this lion when "thrown to the lions" in the Colloseum.
