dgrimm60,
Sorry, guess I got carried away. It just seemed to me that priests probably sweat in the summer time in spite of linen clothes. Then I carried it too far to talk about the church and school.

Here is a "not-so-trivial" thought: 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. Philippians 1:23,24 (NIV) These verses suggest that Paul was offered translation, which he declined as he felt he was needed by the churches. But let's look at the context: 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, Philippians 1:20-25 (NIV) Here it now seems that Paul is comparing rest from his trials in death, as compared to living and working for the churches. While it might seem easier to die and be free of his problems, he is choosing to live on as long as Christ should desire him to.

These verses suggest that Paul was offered translation, which he declined as he felt he was needed by the churches. I don't see where you get that Paul was offered translation at all from these verses. He was simply stating his desire.

Rudy, now for an English lesson: 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. Philippians 1:23,24 (NIV) 1) Paul was torn between two choices. 2) One choice was to depart and be with Christ (translated). One possibility was that this meant that he had a choice to be translated. The other possibility was that he could die and wait for the resurrection. The context of the other verses suggest this, but it leaves open the concept of going to heaven at death, which we deny. 3) The other choice, which he took was to remain and serve his churches, which they very much needed.

Why does everyone assume I need English lessons?
I still think Paul was just stating his desire. That's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

I still think Paul was just stating his desire. That's just my opinion. I could be wrong. Don't apologies for your thoughts or what you believe is correct. We each have a right to what we think this particular text says. And besides our salvation is not going to be thrown out because we've incorrectly interpreted this passage. And besides, not that I'm smarter than anyone else, I agree with you and dgrimm on this. pk

You're not mistaken. As I pointed out, if Paul was offered translation and refused, then he was disagreeing with God. Paul was simply tired of living in prison. He thought death preferable. And his next conscious awareness would be in God's presence.

Thanks, TB. I perhaps should have waited another day before going on to the next trivia fact.
I DO, however, really enjoy feedback and discussion! I'm glad to see that people are awake!
