from Christs Object Lessons Chapter 27—“Who is My Neighbour?”

Christ knew that no one could obey the law in his own strength. He desired to lead the lawyer to clearer and more critical research that he might find the truth. Only by accepting the virtue and grace of Christ can we keep the law. Belief in the propitiation for sin enables fallen man to love God with his whole heart and his neighbor as himself. {27COL 378.1}

ive been reading, and rereading, Steps to Christ and Christs Object Lessons and come across thoughts here and there that ive been collecting. the above is one of those...

a couple of paragraphs further down in the same chapter,

Love is the basis of godliness. Whatever the profession, no man has pure love to God unless he has unselfish love for his brother. But we can never come into possession of this spirit by trying to love others. What is needed is the love of Christ in the heart. When self is merged in Christ, love springs forth spontaneously. The completeness of Christian character is attained when the impulse to help and bless others springs constantly from within—when the sunshine of heaven fills the heart and is revealed in the countenance. {27COL 384.2}

It is not possible for the heart in which Christ abides to be destitute of love. If we love God because He first loved us, we shall love all for whom Christ died. We cannot come in touch with divinity without coming in touch with humanity; for in Him who sits upon the throne of the universe, divinity and humanity are combined. Connected with Christ, we are connected with our fellow men by the golden links of the chain of love. Then the pity and compassion of Christ will be manifest in our life. We shall not wait to have the needy and unfortunate brought to us. We shall not need to be entreated to feel for the woes of others. It will be as natural for us to minister to the needy and suffering as it was for Christ to go about doing good. {27COL 384.3}

2Ti 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

1Jn 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Joh 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

I too have been reading this wonderful book. I brought it along on my visit with my son in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Here are some choice statements:

"Christ favorite theme was the paternal tenderness and abundant grace of God. He dwelt much upon the holiness of His character and His law. He presented Himself to the people as the Way, the Truth and the Life."

"Christ taught the truth because He was the truth. His own thought, His character, His life-experience, were embodied in His teaching. So with His servants; those who would teach the word are to make it their own by personal experience...."

"The roots of the plant strike down deep into the soil and hidden from sight nourish the life of the plant. So with the Christian; it is by the invisible union of the soul with Christ, through faith, that the spiritual life is nourished...."

"Love must be the principle of action. Love is the underlying principle of God's government in heaven and earth, and it must be the foundation of the Christian character. This alone can make him steadfast. This alone can enable him to withstand trial and temptation."

These statements are all found in Christ's Object Lessons, in the chapter The Sower Went Forth To Sow." There are many many other choice foundational statements in that chapter and I'm sure the whole book. Enjoy!
