I can't see them just a white box with a red x in it.
Does this mean all the smilies here are scarlet letter smilies or do I need to upgrade sumpin?

I am using IE 8 but I tried with Google Chrome and could not see them either. I am having some issues with Java though so that could be it as well.

The Java was going to be my next suggestion. I would completely uninstall it from any and all browsers, and reinstall current versions. Also; your Internet Options Settings may need tweeking, if that does not work..

I get an installation error when I try to reinstall it. I can't remember what it is right now. I will try it tomorrow and screen shot it for you. Maybe you might have a better idea of what it actually says in english.

Is this error with Firefox or IE? And are you completely uninstalling it first before trying to reinstall? You should reboot machine after uninstall, BEFORE trying to reinstall.
Do you have the same problem with both browsers; or just with one?
If you have both FF and IE; perhaps you could try Google Chrome?
It might be worth seeing if the error will duplicate in other browsers.
Which version of Windows are you using - and do you have this problem re the smilies anywhere else on the internet?
Sorry for bombing you with all these questions; but it's the only way to figure this. The screenshot might help too. Good idea.
