Did they have anyone to help them out in situations? Were some persecuted? Did some give up their faith?

Military chaplains have the obligation to facilitate (but not to provide) for the religious/spiritual needs of everyone, regardless of whether or not they agree with the person.

During one assignment, I was on the teaching faculty of the U. S. Army Chaplain Center and School. We had the primary responsibility for training all soldiers who were either chaplains of who were enlisted people who worked with chaplains. I spent most of my time training chaplains for their initial entry into the Army to function as a chaplain. In one of my instructional courses, I had to teach that concept that our responsibility as chaplains is to facilate sincerely held beleifs.

Our society today has a much better understanding of this concept than it did many years ago. So, there was a time when many military chaplains were unable to follow this dicta. In reality, the military today is seeing more people attempt to become chaplains who do not understand and practice this. This is seen in the discussions that currently are taking place that involved the U. S. Air Force Academy and religious/spiritual guidelines.

So, what am I saying? In those early days the system was not well constructed to deal with people of beliefs such as SDAs. In many ways the freedoms that we have to day are built upon the firmly held convictions of people who have gone before us, such a Desmond Doss. I believe that God had a role for him to play, and that the purpose was to lead to the Medal of Honor so that God's name could be glorified, and we would have some of the religious freedoms that we have in the military today.

Yes, some SDAs went to prison for their beleifs.
