Yes, there are others. I am not real informed on those countries, so I will neither mention names, nor give figures. Those countries are few, and in those countries the SDA chaplains are basicly token chaplains. For SDA clergy to be accepted, a few have to enter, do well, and thereby open the way for others to follow them.

G'day,

I tried to enter the Australian Navy as a chaplain. I had done 6 years in the fiels as an Adventist pastor and pulled out before ordination.

I went down to my local Navy/Military office and inquired - what a joke. I was led on a wild goose chase in correspondence with large Catholic and Anglican Bishops at the head of the Australian Board of Chaplains. They said I needed to be ordained first, and if I even managed to jump over that hurdle I probably wouldn't get picked up on the ratio theory.

The theory states that if you have a large percentage of your own faith in the Navy then you have a better chance at getting in. If the ratio is down then you don't have a chance. I tried to challenge this theory with them on the basis that I was not going into the Navy just to minister to my own kind but those without any particular faith which made up the majority of soldiers. What I needed was help from my church to back me in these debates with the Navy but I was never offered help or support to battle the Navy on this topic. I did write to some in leadership but nothing came of it.

It's such a shame because there could be a real ministry oportunity here for Adventist chaplains in Oz but we need the backing of the church if we are going to take on the religious "don's" who are on this advisory board and blocking other denominations from coming into the Navy.

Danny

I grew up in other countries as my parents were missionaries and I never heard of SDA chaplains in the military in those countries, but that doesn't mean there weren't any.

For the best information on the countries that now allow SDA military chaplains, and the relative ease on which one can enter such you should contact Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries in the General Conference. They have the best information.

Yes, you want to get the job, you must meet the standards.

NOTE: The SDA Chruch does have female military chaplains. Ordination, as such in not required in any US Federal chaplaincy. But, the equavalancy is always required.

Military chaplaincies (SDA) in countries other than the USA is a developing situation. It is clearly taking place due to the efforts of the General Conference. It is also a relatively new ministry.

A quick question:

Do you have to be a PRACTICING SDA and a chaplain to be a military chaplain?

I'm a FORMER SDA, now rabbi and I'd be interested in becoming a SDA Military Chaplain.
