Please pray for 13 miners that became trapped in a mine explosion earlier today in north central West Virginia. If you would like more info on this, just go to cnn.com.

I can't help but feel sad for the families. The situation is bleak at best. Seems this explosion has caused a problem with methane gas. The miners have safety equipment but its uncertain how long they would be able to hold out in a methane situation. Apparently they are trapped approximately 1 mile down into this underground mine.

Thank you!

I can't even imagine how bad it would feel to be trapped underground.

Yes, I will pray for them

Naomi

Laura, do you live near where this accident happened?

I'm praying for the safety of those trapped miners. (I remember that some Pennsylvania miners were brought out safely, after a similar accident several years ago....)

TEXT: Explosion Traps 13 W. Va. Miners

Quote:

The explosion is the state's worst mining accident since February 2003, when three contract workers were killed by a methane explosion while drilling an air shaft at a Consol Energy Mine near Cameron. The state ended 2005 with three mining fatalities, the lowest since 2000.

In September 2001, 13 coal miners were killed in a series of explosions at a mine in Broached, Ala. Ten miners had rushed in to rescue co-workers injured by an explosion, only to be killed themselves by a second blast. That was the nation's worst mining accident since Dec. 19, 1984, when fire killed 27 coal miners near Orangeville, Utah.

In July 2002, nine miners were rescued after being trapped for 77 hours in a mine near Somerset, Pa.

I live roughly 80 miles from there, due south. The mining accident is in north central WV and I live in south central WV. May sound strange being WV is a relatively small state to say north or south central WV but, that is how it is here.

And in the middle of all this, WV University is playing in the Sugar Bowl tonight...sigh Very sobering...indeed.

Naomi, I have been in the "Exhibition Mine" that is in Beckley, WV. It was a working mine at one time (years ago) but when it was worked out, it was turned into a museum of sorts. You get on an actual coal car and it takes you down into the mine. They even give you the effect of how dark dark is by turning out the lights. It IS a very eerie feeling and you truly cannot see a thing. And it's quite chilly down there. I don't believe we were nearly down as far as what the trapped miners are presently but it was enough for me!

Thanks so much for the prayers. Coal mining families are a very tight knit unit and when situations like this hit, it totally immobilizes a community around the families affected.
