The Economy

It's a "strong hire, low fire" market Illustration: Lindsey Bailey/Axios The job market looks remarkably strong, Axios' Courtenay Brown writes from new government data. Employers are hiring faster than almost any economist anticipated, unemployment remains historically low, and wages keep rising. 📈 By the numbers: Employment rose by 165,000 jobs last month — more than double the 65,000 that economists expected. The previous months' revisions also showed stronger hiring heading into fall than previously believed. Even as hiring fluctuated this year, the unemployment rate has stayed in a tight range of 4.1% to 4.3% since March. The pickup in hiring is particularly striking given how sharply job growth slowed over the summer. Employers have added an average of 137,000 jobs per month over the past three months. That's compared with a three-month average of just 28,000 from May through July. Data: Bureau of Labor Statistics. Chart: Courtenay Brown/Axios Yes, but: Those working part-time — either because they couldn't find full-time jobs or had their hours cut — surged by 339,000 to 4.8 million last month. The bottom line: Democrats' midterm romp underscored Americans' frustration with the cost of living. Still, the job market offers room for optimism. Go deeper. -

Why the Book of Enoch is not part of the Bible
Gustave replied to hobie's topic in Townhall - Original thoughts
Hobie, Jesus never quoted Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, the Song of Solomon, AND Ecclesiastes. Using your rubric those Books should not be in your Bible. The Bible doesn't mention beasts breeding human females and producing confused fruit and a host of other things Ellen White claimed yet you accept those. Why? -

Thank you for that reference. While I was in Michigan, I attended several seminars by Pastor Holmes. He was amazing. Very humble. Soft spoken. I have one of his books in my library, Sing a New Song: Worship Renewal for Adventists Today by C. Raymond Holmes I did not know he died at camp meeting. That does not surprise me. The Michigan conference would never leave retired workers alone. Always finding jobs for them. Some moved out of state for this reason. He was a great guy. Well said.

Data Centers
phkrause replied to phkrause's topic in Politics (Mainly US) and other American interest items
Data centers took a beating in the midterm elections. A reckoning may be ahead for tech giants The midterm elections ushered in a wave of Democrats pledging to clamp down on the energy-hungry behemoths. A tougher regulatory environment is expected to follow, even if President Donald Trump — perhaps the industry’s biggest champion — stalls any federal crackdown. Read more. What to know: Data center regulation itself was not on most midterm ballots, and it wasn't among the top issues for most voters. But hard-line stances against the server warehouses were woven into the platforms of many candidates, including the Democrats who upended longtime Republican control of the governorships in Texas, Ohio, Georgia, Nevada and Iowa, many of which are data center hotspots. The election of data center skeptics adds challenges to stock markets riding high on the AI boom. On Thursday, the Nasdaq, which is full of AI-related and other tech stocks, sank 11% below its all-time high amid worries that data center construction may slow because it’s getting costlier to borrow money. AI data center construction is driving much of the U.S. economy’s growth, and any slowdown could have a broader chill. -

Global stocks sink amid AI slowdown fears Pedestrians pass the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York City. (Michael Nagle/Getty Images) Global markets tumbled after a Wall Street rout Thursday wiped out roughly $2.5 trillion in market value, driven by fears that Democrats’ midterm gains could slow the AI boom. The turmoil comes as the tech industry grapples with what a Democratic-controlled Congress could mean for its future and billions of dollars in investments. At the heart of the anxiety are Democrats’ wins in Texas this week. The state has become an AI powerhouse, attracting billions in investments from Google, Meta, Oracle and OpenAI. But Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa campaigned on pausing new data centers and rolling back certain tax breaks, leaving Wall Street to wonder whether the industry’s ambitious plans are about to hit a political roadblock. The unease extends well beyond Texas, though. On Thursday, the Nasdaq, Dow and S&P 500 posted their worst day since April 2025, with the Nasdaq plunging 5.52% and closing in correction territory. The fallout is now rippling through global markets, as investors reassess their big bets on AI. Chipmaking giant Nvidia also sank more than 9% on Thursday, wiping out its gains for the year. Elon Musk’s companies weren’t spared either, with Tesla and SpaceX falling 11% and 9%, respectively. + Read more: What sparked Wall Street’s crazy sell-off? + Video: CNN’s Matt Egan quickly explains the stock slump + Plus: Asian markets follow US rout as AI investment jitters spread
