Kirsten Stendahl, a one-time dean of Harvard Divinity School wrote a couple of articles in the very early 60s.They have been preserved in "Paul Among Jews and Gentiles." Later writers such as James Dunn, N.T. Wright, and E.P. Sanders followed, more or less, in his footsteps. Stendahl laid the egg that others hatched. His main point is that Protestantism has made a serious error in interpreting theology in the same vein as Luther. Luther and Paul had very different "conversion" experiences. As a result, Luther's understanding of Paul is seriously flawed. Due to Luther's outsized influence on Protestantism, the church traveled a wrong path, even to this day. One example of this wrong path is Luther's understanding of the roll of law in the Christian life. Luther held that the roll of the law is to bring guilt down upon people. This guilt drives them to Christ for salvation. This is known as the 2nd use of the law in Reformation theology.

Stendahl disagrees with this view based on his understanding of Galatians 3:24,25, RSV: "So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith.
But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian;" Note that in this translation, decidedly different from the KJV, the roll of the law ended when Christ came. The law served only until the first advent. The KJV says that the law brings us to Christ. Many people understand this to mean that the law continues to work in bringing people to Christ. The RSV indicates that the function of the law ended when Christ came.

It doesn't matter in one sense. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would convince people of sin.

Many say the changes of the NIV don't make any difference, but I came across the following discussion.

"As you no doubt know, the critical text uses Nestle-Aland 27th ed with variant readings. Nestle-Aland relies primarily on, guess which two manuscripts? Sinaiticus and Vaticanus! What is TRULY amazing is that Westcott and Hort are now considered to be comparatively accurate! More so than the Received Text (TR)

As for the NIV, it does massacre the text in some important areas, regardless of which manuscripts are relied on. One example is Hebrews 9, where the NIV changes 'holy place' to 'Most Holy Place.' Also, Colossians 2,'sabbaths' to 'a Sabbath day.' Etc."

"Hebrews 9 says that Christ entered the 'greater and more perfect tabernacle . . .' and that He entered the Holy Place. v. 12 says that Christ entered the Holy Place, ta hagia, not the Most Holy Place, hagia haggiwn. The NIV, along with Desmond Ford, have attempted to change that. In vv. 24ff, it says He sacrificed Himself. But your best clue is found in what you yourself have said. His stated work was 'to make intercession for us.' That is the distinctive ministry of the courtyard and the Holy Place. The work in the Most Holy Place was a work of judgment....Heb. 9 specifies that Christ entered ta hagia, the holy place, as opposed to hagia haggiwn.

Christ's ministry as our intercessor occurs in the holy place, within the veil. That is what began shortly after his ascension. "

and there are more changes that affect doctrine and the changes also affect the New King James version, here is a good article to go over...

"Let us look at the two Bible versions most in use by Protestantism, the NIV and the NKJV, and compare them with the Authorized King James Bible to see if they are in harmony with these divine, irrevocable criteria established by God Himself.

THE SABBATH

KING JAMES BIBLE 'But the seventh day is THE Sabbath of the Lord Thy God' Exodus 20:10. This is speaking of a definite and particular day of the week, which we know refers to Saturday, the seventh day of the week on the calendar.

NIV VERSION 'But the seventh day is A Sabbath to the Lord your God...' Exodus 20:10. By substituting the definite 'the' for an indefinite 'a,' this takes the emphasis of any particular day and leaves one free to choose any day of the week as 'a' 'Sabbath day'a subtle attack by Satan on God's holy Sabbath day.

THE DEVIL

KING JAMES BIBLE 'By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I WILL DESTROY THEE, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire...Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffic: therefore WILL I BRING FORTH A FIRE from the midst of thee, IT SHALL DEVOUR THEE, and I WILL BRING THEE TO ASHES UPON THE EARTH in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people SHALL BE ASTONISHED at thee: THOU SHALT BE A TERROR AND NEVER SHALT THOU BE ANY MORE.' Ezekiel 28:16, 18,19.
Here, the King James Bible clearly speaks of a FUTURE judgment to fall upon Satan.

NIV VERSION 'Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones. [verse stops here]..By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries. So I MADE A FIRE COME OUT FROM YOU, AND IT CONSUMED YOU, and I REDUCED YOU TO ASHES ON THE GROUND in the sight of all who were watching. All the nations who knew you ARE APPALLED AT YOU: YOU HAVE COME TO A HORRIBLE END AND WILL BE NO MORE.' Ezekiel 28: 16,18,19.

NEW KING JAMES VERSION 'By the abundance of your trading you became filled with violence within, and you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God; an[ I DESTROYED YOU, O covering cherub, from the midst of the fiery stones. You defiled your sanctuaries by the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trading; Therefore I BROUGHT FIRE FROM YOUR MIDST; IT DEVOURED YOU, AND I TURNED YOU TO ASHES UPON THE EARTH in the sight of all who saw you, All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you; YOU HAVE BECOME A HORROR, AND SHALL BE NO MORE FOREVER.' Ezekiel 28: 26,18,19.

Both the NIV and the NKJV present this event as something already done and in the past in direct contrast to the KJV, and in direct contradiction to Revelation 20:10 which states that the devil will be cast into the lake of fire after the 1000 year millennium. Which version manifests the Spirit of truth, and which shows that it comes from the father of lies?

THE SANCTUARY/1844

KING JAMES BIBLE: 'Neither by the blood of goats and calves, buy by His own blood He entered in once INTO THE HOLY PLACE, having obtained eternal redemption for us.' Hebrews 9:12.

In accordance with Advent truth, this verse harmonizes with the Sanctuary message that Christ did not enter the Most Holy Place until 1844.

NIV VERSION 'He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but HE ENTERED THE MOST HOLY PLACE once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.' Hebrews 9:12

NEW KING JAMES VERSION 'Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood HE ENTERED THE MOST HOLY PLACE once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.' Hebrews 9:12.

Both of these versions attack the Advent message pillar of 1844 by indicating that Christ went into the Most Holy place at His ascension.

THE STATE OF THE DEAD

KING JAMES BIBLE 'The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment TO BE PUNISHED.' 2 Peter 2:9.
This verse clearly tells us that the unjust will not receive their punishment until after they have been judged.

NIV VERSION 'If this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, WHILE CONTINUING THEIR PUNISHMENT.' 2 Peter 2: 9.

NEW KING JAMES VERSION 'Then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly our of temptations and to reserve the unjust UNDER PUNISHMENT for the day of judgment.' 2 Peter 2: 9.
Both of these versions give credence to the Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory.

3 ANGELS MESSAGE/RIGHTEOUSNESS BY FAITH

KING JAMES BIBLE 'Because STRAIT is the gate, and NARROW IS THE WAY, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.' Matthew 7:14.

NEW KING JAMES VERSION 'Because NARROW is the gate, and DIFFICULT IS THE WAY which leads to life, and there are few who find it.' Matthew 7:14.
Here the NKJV not only changes 'strait' to 'narrow,' but replaces 'narrow' with 'difficult.' The implication of this is that if something is difficult you just try 'just work a little harder and you'll eventually make it', or in other words, Righteousness by WORKS, not Righteousness by FAITH which is the 3 Angel's message in surety. A teaching of Divine truth, or satanic falsehood?

THE HOLY SPIRIT

KING JAMES BIBLE 'Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?' James 4:5.
This verse speaks of the yearnings and desires of the carnal nature.

NEW KING JAMES VERSION 'Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, 'The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously?' James 4:5.
By substituting Spirit for spirit this version declares that the Holy Spirit leads one to sin. Again, is this blasphemous substitution indicative of holy inspiration or satanic manipulation?

CONCLUSION
Nine of the 'scholars' that produced the NKJV were also on the translation committee of the NIV. Is it not reasonable then to suppose that their attitudes, their opinions, their beliefs were no different when they translated the NKJV than when the produced the NIV? The NKJV makes over 100,000 word changes from the KJV, and though they claim that it's a superior and more accurate translation they state: 'It was the editor's conviction that the use of footnotes would encourage further inquiry by readers. They also recognized that it was easier for the average reader to delete something he or she felt was not properly a part of the text, than to insert a word or phrase which had been left out by the revisers.' [The New King James Bible, 1982, Study Edition, The History of the King James Bible. P. 1235]

Here the editors of the NKJV are encouraging anyone and everyone to delete something he or she felt was not properly a part of the text. So if you are reading along and you run across something you don't FEEL should be a part of the text, just delete it!!! A candid revelation of the true spirituality of these men and by the way, other than the name, the NEW King James Bible has nothing to do with the King James Bible. That was a clever and extremely successful marketing ploy to sell more Bibles. If the publishers would have named it, for example, the New Thomas Nelson Edition of the Bible, it's very doubtful that as many would have been sold.

The supplied verses prove that the NIV attacks three of Adventism's pillars, the Sabbath, the State of the Dead, and the Sanctuary...."http://omega77.tripod.com/cs1gettingtobot.htm

and the changes aren't just on doctrine...

SOME OMISSIONS & DELETIONS IN THE NIV BIBLE

THESE CAN BE SEEN IN MOST VERSIONS AS WELL, EXCEPT THE King James Version

1. NIV in Luke 11:2-4 omits key parts of the LORD'S PRAYER.
2. NIV, in Isaiah 14:12 blasphemes CHRIST by putting Him in the place of Lucifer (devil).
3. NIV in Micah 5:2 says Christ has an ORIGIN, wrongly making Him a CREATED being.
4. NIV in Romans 1:29 omits FORNICATION from the sins listed with sodomy.
5. NIV in Exodus 20:10 & Colossians 2:14 attacks on the SEVENTH DAY SABBATH.
6. NIV in Ephesians 3:9 removes Christ from being CREATOR.
7. NIV in Revelation 22:14 attacks on COMMANDMENT KEEPING.
8. NIV in I John 5:7, 8 denies the TRINITY and DEITY of CHRIST.
9. NIV in Revelation 12:17 attacks on the REMNANT CHURCHS IDENTITY.
10. NIV in Daniel 8:14 & Hebrews 9:3-4 attacks on the SANCTUARY DOCTRINE.
11. NIV in Matthew 28:20 & Matthew 24:3 PROMOTES NEW AGE MOVEMENT.
12. NIV omits FASTING 5 times, and weakens PRAYER LIFE 3 times (Matthew 17:21).
13. NIV 178 KEY portions of verses are deleted (example Matthew 20:16).
14. NIV 17 ESSENTIAL verses are completely omitted (example Matthew 18:11).
15. NIV omits names of JESUS 38 times, CHRIST 43 times, LORD 35 times, GOD 31 times and OTHER NAMES OF GOD 26 times. Therefore, total names 173 times.... Study on Daniel and Revelation Chapters - Page 9 A

There is a Investigative Judgment, or Pre-Advent Judgment, as distinct from the Final Judgment of the Second Death, which scripture shows begins before the Second Coming as the saints cannot simply go to heaven without a determination of their standing. Man is not immortal of self and doesnt go to heaven at death, and there is not any kind of judgment immediately after death. I was reading the lesson and came to this part,
"Real Repentance
The secular world bombards us with messages of independence, indulgence, and self-promotion--the opposite of the principles of God’s kingdom. Interestingly, the first words recorded in the Bible by John the Baptist and Jesus were similar. John said, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” (Matt. 3:1-2, NKJV). Jesus said, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:14-15, NKJV; see also Luke 24:46-47). Both Jesus and John called those listening to repentance because the kingdom of heaven was near. Could it be that this same message is equally as relevant to us today?"

So what does repentance do for us, does it lead to change, real repentance does. Does it bring us closer to God, as we clear out the anger and hate and addiction to sin, I would say it does. Most importantly, how does it bring us to the Kingdom of Heaven and eternal life with Christ? True repentance is not merely feeling guilty or avoiding punishment or being shames, it is a sincere turning away from sin and toward God, involving humility, honesty, and a change of heart. We must allow the Holy Spirit to do its work and guide us down the path of transformation, and stop holding on to hating our brother or breaking what allows for sin and iniquity, and what takes us away from loving God and our fellow man. True repentance involves as what is simple as we see, 'two steps: (1) sincere pain and sorrow for our sins; and (2) the honest decision to abandon sin. In the Bible, repentance is almost always connected to forgiveness. We genuinely repent; God forgives. It’s that simple.'

So why dont we repent and turn from what is evil?

24 So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith.

Schoolmaster in KJV is an unfortunate translation. The "schoolmaster" was a trusted servant responsible for accompanying his charge to school. Young's literal translation describes the KJV schoolmaster as "child-conductor." This is a better translation. Note that both versions agree that once we come to Christ, we are no longer under the supervision of the child-conductor. Luther understood this. Calvin, on the other hand, likened the law in the Christian's life to a whip with which one lashes a lazy ass.

	The Bible

I decided that it might be of value to give a background to the book that we call the Bible.

Catholic Bibles mainly differ from Protestant Bibles in that they include some ancient writings, generally called by Protestants, The Apocrypha, that is not included in Protestant Bibles Some other differences are very minor and not significant.

Origin: All of the Biblical books began as written documents (Autographs) written well before printed documents existed. We do not have any of those documents. All we have are copies of the original documents. Those documents do contain some scribal errors. But, they are highly accurate and the minor errors are commonly seen in comparison with other copies which we have.

Chapters and Verses: As first written, the Biblical books did not have chapters and verses. They were mostly written as one document. L Scholars added the chapters and verses at a later time.

The New Testament was written in Biblical Greek (Koine Greek) which differs from the modern Greek language of today. Scholars understand that language very well today. Those documents also contain Individual words from other languages that were spoken in Palestine in the time when the writings were prepared.

The Old Testament was mostly written in Biblical Hebrew, which differs ftom the modern Hebrew of today. However, a little bit of the Old Testament was written in
Aramaic, which is well understood today. Aramaic is a close cousin to the Hebrew of that time. All those who spoke Hebrew were likely able to understand Aramaic.

Translation: The Bibles that you purchase today have generally been translated in one to the following three types:

Formal Translation sticks very clsely to the original text. It is commonly used for doctrinal study, preaching and by scholars.

Dynamic Translation attempts to esent the authors thinking in a manner that is easly understood in the translated language.

Paraphrased translation attempts to present what the translator thinks the author wanted to say, into the translated language.

The careful student of the Bible will need to understand the background of the Biblical material and the process of producing the copies and the methods of translation. However, that student can rest assured that the Bibles of today do contain what God wanted humans to know.

"There is one word in the New Testament that comes straight from Greek mythology. Not a metaphor. Not a translation choice. The actual name of the abyss where the Titans were imprisoned.

The letter is 2 Peter, composed in Koine Greek for diaspora communities spread across the Roman world in the first century CE. Verse 2:4 is about angels who sinned and what God did with them.

Most translations render the passage simply as "cast them into hell." But the Greek word Peter chose was not Hades. Not Gehenna. Not "the pit." The word came directly from "Tartaros," the deepest region of the underworld in Greek mythology, a place so far below Hades that, in Hesiod's Theogony, a bronze anvil dropped from the surface of the earth would fall for nine days before reaching it.

The verb Peter used, "tartarosas," appears nowhere else in the entire New Testament. Every other writer who needed a word for the realm of the dead reached for Hades or Gehenna. Only this one verse goes to Tartarus.

In Hesiod's account, written roughly seven centuries before this letter, Tartarus is where Zeus imprisoned the Titans after the war for Olympus. Sealed away from the rest of creation. Absolute confinement.
Peter placed fallen angels there.

He was writing for people who had grown up inside Greek cultural memory. He did not need to explain what Tartarus meant to them. He needed only to use the word, and they would already understand the weight of it.

He did not argue against the mythology. He absorbed its cosmological grammar and refilled it. The prison stayed. The inhabitants changed.
Scholars call this kind of move a recontextualization: taking the structural logic of a pre-existing concept and fitting it to new theological meaning. It is one of the more quietly stunning word choices in the entire text.

A fisherman. A word borrowed from Hesiod. One verse that most readers have never noticed, because every translation made it vanish back into "hell."....

Robert quoted this well-known EGW piece in another recent thread:

Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions. While the former lays the foundation of spiritualism, the latter creates a bond of sympathy with Rome. The Protestants of the United States will be foremost in stretching their hands across the gulf to grasp the hand of spiritualism; they will reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power; and under the influence of this threefold union, this country will follow in the steps of Rome in trampling on the rights of conscience.

Sorry, I don't have the reference handy.

It got me wondering. Spiritualism - the Fox sisters and their hoaxes, table rapping, ouija boards and so on - is pretty much a dead force in the world these days. It still exists around the corners, but it's far from a massive influence with the power to lead the masses astray.

Frankly, it's an historical artefact of the time when EGW was writing. It was a craze in 19th century America, but has since faded.

The thing is, antiCatholicism is the same sort of thing: powerful in mid-19th century America, fading now, as Catholicism shows its face as simply one sect among many, albeit a large and wealthy one.

I honestly think it might be time for SDAism to move on. The 'two great errors'... turn out to have been made by EGW, or at least by those who take her writings a century into the future and expect that they will still apply in the same way.

It might be worth thinking about the great spiritual threats of now: my own nominee would be the conviction, despite Jesus' direct statement, that it's possible to serve both God and Mammon.

My thought was that it is a public declaration of one's faith and a desire to walk in newness of life.

If my belief on this is correct ... why would one be baptized in private without witnesses and then never refer to it or acknowledge it during their lifetime?

Why would anyone do this? Do you feel that a leader would do this? Would this set a good example? Or am I totally off base and perhaps we should keep our baptisms secret?

Ever notice that the first few verses don't actually make sense? Using the marriage analogy, one would expect Paul to say that the law dies so we can be married to Jesus. He says we die so we can marry another. Logic would require us to understand that we were first married to the law. When the law dies, we are then free to marry Jesus. But Paul says we die, so we can marry another. Verse 6 again says we died to that which held us captive [thelaw]. If Paul is saying that the death we experience through our connection to Jesus and our new life through the resurrection of Christ, the law has not died; consequently, we would still be in adultery if we marry Jesus while the law lives.

Anyone have any insight here? I'd like to know what Cranfield says in his Shorter Commentary on Romans.

Well, this is amazing. I was taking my wife to the beach as she had an outbreak which I thought the sun and warm waters would help heal. So we headed there and I grabbed my beach bag and made sure it had all my change of clothes, towels, and a book to read which I grabbed on the way out. So we get there and set up with beach chairs and bags and go in the water and it was so hot the sand was burning to walk on and the water ready for soup. Well anyway I finally get out of the water, and go to sit on the chairs, and sip a cool drink and pull out a book to read and relax. So I open the book I grabbed and come to a part where the words I am reading just leave me dumbfounded. Here is the part I had come across...

"The Historical Background of Seventh-Day Adventism Seventh-day Adventism sprang from the "Great Second Advent Awakening," which shook the religious world just before the middle of the nineteenth century when a reemphasis on the second advent of Jesus Christ was rampant in Britain and on the continent of Europe. Before long, many of the Old World views of prophetic interpretation crossed the Atlantic and penetrated American theological circles. Based largely upon the apocalyptic books of Daniel and Revelation, the theology of the Advent Movement was discussed in the newspapers as well as in theological journals. New Testament eschatology competed with stock market quotations for front-page space, and the "seventy weeks," "twenty-three hundred days," and "the abomination of desolation" (Daniel 8–9) were common subjects of conversation. Following the chronology of Archbishop Ussher, and interpreting the 2300 days of Daniel as 2300 years, many Bible students of various denominations concluded that Christ would come back about the year 1843. Of this studious number was one William Miller, a Baptist minister and resident of Lower Hampton, New York. The Great Second Advent Awakening, which swept the United States in the 1840’s, stemmed largely from the activities of this William Miller, who confidently taught in the year 1818 that in "about" twenty-five years, i.e., 1843, Jesus Christ would come again...At length his associates set October 22, 1844, as the final date when Jesus Christ would return for His saints."

I was intrigued as clearly this was saying that this timeline of the 2300 days of Daniel as 2300 years was seen by others and was being studied by many believers. William Miller was studying what many others were going over with great interest, and he was not some wild eyed extremist as we see. "Miller was raised by a deeply religious mother, but despite her zeal for his conversion, Miller became a deist. Only after a soul-searching experience that culminated in his conversion did he begin his preparation for ministry in the Baptist church. A great many books have been written about William Miller and the Millerite movement, but to this writer’s knowledge none of them proved Miller to be dishonest or deceptive in his prophetic interpretation of Scripture. Indeed, he enjoyed the reputation, among all who knew him, of being an honest, forthright Christian."

The problem was not the timeline but the event that they were looking at had been picked up with the wrong ending, which if they had been Jewish, would have been clear from their understanding of work of the High Priest in the earthly sanctuary. And we see more of what others were seeing then...

"Clearly it may be seen that although Miller popularized the 1843/1844 concept of Christ’s coming again, he was by no means alone. If we condemn him, we must also condemn a large number of internationally known scholars who were among the most highly educated men of their day. Yet they, too, had a blind spot in prophetic interpretation and endorsed this fallacious system of date-setting."

They were looking for the second advent, and we can see now how the fixation on this led to the great disappointment. Here is a clear and much better explanation than I could give of the issue from the book..

"Regardless of the number of scholars who confirmed his errors, however, the fact remains that Miller and the Millerite movement operated contrary to the express injunctions of Scripture. Both Miller and his followers lived to reap the reward of their foolhardy quest and to suffer crushing humiliation, ridicule, and abject despair.,, The final phase of the movement closed with the “Great Disappointment of 1844,” but as the Millerites disbanded, there emerged other groups, such as the First-day Adventists. However, in our study we are concerned primarily with three segments that later fused to produce the Seventh-day Adventist denomination... At this point in our historical analysis of Seventh-day Adventism, we believe it will be profitable to briefly review “The Great Disappointment of 1844” and its relationship to the Seventh-day Adventist doctrines of the heavenly sanctuary and the investigative judgment. The entire superstructure of the Millerites’ prophetic interpretation was based upon their view of the book of Daniel, chapters eight and nine, with particular emphasis upon Daniel 8:14 and 9:24–27. The Millerites believed that the prophecy of the seventy weeks of Daniel nine must date from the year 457 BC., which, as recent archaeological evidence confirms,16 was the exact date of the decree of King Artaxerxes to rebuild Jerusalem (Daniel 9:25). Tracing the seventy weeks of Daniel on the theory that, as the Hebrew indicated, it should be rendered “seventy weeks of years” or 490 years, the Millerites arrived at the date AD. 33; that is, from 457 BC. to AD. 33. Since this date generally corresponds with Christ’s crucifixion, Millerites then linked it to Daniel 8:14—“Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed”—with the seventy weeks of years prophecy, and the 2300 days became 2300 years. Thus, if you subtract 490 years (adding, of course, AD. 1 to 33), the figure arrived at is 1843. Many biblical scholars have historically shown that in Scripture a day frequently symbolizes a year; further, that the seventy weeks and 2300 days of Daniel could have begun on the same date. And that date, according to the Millerites, was 457 BC.

So we see here clearly that it was not William Miller who came up with the timeline leading to 1844, but it was from many of those who studied Gods Word, and this comes not from some advocate of Adventism or from the church, but from a surprising source...

If an acquaintance at your church asked you to accompany them to share the gospel with a coworker who’d expressed deep guilt for his sins, would you go? All Christians should jump at that chance. Let’s say you go. Russ, your acquaintance, shares the gospel. The coworker expresses a desire to believe in Jesus but throughout the conversation voices skepticism about some Christian beliefs. What are your thoughts as Russ addresses these concerns?

Christian films often portray that all those who have not received the mark of the beast will be killed, this is a symbolic truth. The circumstances are true, but they missed the real meaning due to some failed interpretations. All those who have not taken the mark are killed, this part is true, but those who have not taken the mark are Hamas. The mark was given during the elections for the president of the Palestinian authority, which was boycotted by Hamas. Hamas has never received the mark. Films like to portray all people as subject to the mark. This part is wrong. It only affects those Palestinians who did not take the mark, and not the whole world. It is only Hamas. The word "atonement" appears in the KJV New Testament just one time:

Ro 5:11 And not only [so], but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

The Greek word for atonement is καταλλαγή [SN/OLB# 2643] OLB refers to the Online Bible computer program.

2643 is used 4 times in the NT. Except for Romans 5:11, it is translated as reconcile/d or reconciliation:

Ro 11:15 For if the casting away of them [be] the reconciling <2643> of the world, what [shall] the receiving [of them be], but life from the dead?

	2Co 5:18 And all things [are] of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation <2643>;

2Co 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation <2643>

A closely related word is καταλλάσσω [2644]:

Ro 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled <2644> to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled <2644>, we shall be saved by his life.
1Co 7:11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled <2644> to [her] husband: and let not the husband put away [his] wife.
2Co 5:18 And all things [are] of God, who hath reconciled <2644> us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
2Co 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling <2644> the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
2Co 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech [you] by us: we pray [you] in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled <2644> to God.

Sometimes the Greek words numbered 2643, a verb, and 2644, a noun, appear in the same verse The translation term, "atonement", used in Romans 5:11 is an outlier in the KJV.

The Day of Atonement service in Leviticus 16 is explained in Hebrews 10. The word "atonement" is not mentioned

1 Corinthians 7:11 uses the word translated as "atonement" in Romans 5.11. It refers to the reconciling of a couple in a troubled marriage.

The following is a study paper on the OT history of the sanctuary cleansing:

The temple was polluted and cleansed at different times in the Old Testament. During the ascendence of Ahaz (735-715), the temple doors were shut (2 Ch. 28:24), The daily sacrifices were stopped, no incense was burnt, the lamps in the temple were put out (2 Ch 29:7). In other words, the daily was taken away. His son, Hezekiah (715-686) opened the doors and cleansed the temple during his reign. In this account, the word translated “cleansed” is taher. Hezekiah ordered the priests to sanctify the house and “Carry the filthiness out of the holy place” (2 Ch. 29:5). The priests came together to “cleanse the house of the Lord” (2 Ch 29:15). They went into the inner part of the Lord’s house and carried out all the uncleanness they found (2 Ch 29:16). Three things were done to the temple at this time. The doors were repaired (2 Ch 29:3) The temple was sanctified (2 Ch. 29:5,17). The temple was cleansed (taher) (2 Ch. 29:15). This was not ritualistic cleansing. Actual filth inside the temple was carried out and disposed of at the brook Kidron (2 Ch. 29:16).

The work of cleansing the temple during Hezekiah’s reign was undone by his son Manasseh (696-642). He built altars and placed a graven image in the house of the LORD (2 Ki. 21:4, 7). A graven image in the temple is described as the “desolating sacrilege” in the RSV of 1 Maccabees 1:54. The Greek translated as “desolating sacrilege” is the same as that used in Daniel 9:27, 12:11, Matthew 24:15, and Mark 13:14. Luke, in a similar passage does not mention the abomination of desolation. Instead, Luke says that Jerusalem will be surrounded by armies (21:20). The Jewish Encyclopedia, s.v., “abomination of desolation” identifies the exploits of Antiochus Epiphanes as fulfilling these references in Daniel. “Some rabbis, however, see in it [the Hebrew expression translated as abomination of desolation]an allusion to Manasseh, who, as related in II Chron. xxxiii. 7, set up "a carved image . . . in the house of God."

Manasseh did more evil than the nations around him. 2 Kings 24:1-4 says that the evils of Manasseh brought about the destruction of Judah. He was taken captive by the king of Assyria. As a prisoner in Babylon, he realized his sin. He was eventually released. Upon returning to Jerusalem, he removed the image from the temple, as well as the altars he had built, calling upon the people to serve the Lord (2 Ch. 33: 5-13).

Manasseh’s son Josiah (reigned 640-609) began his work with the repair of the temple (2 Ki. 22:5). Together with Hilkiah the high priest, they removed all the items used in the worship of Baal, Astarte, and the host of heaven. Also destroyed were the houses of the cult prostitutes connected to the temple (2 Kings 23:7). Chariots and horses to the sun were also removed from the entry way into the temple (2 Kings 23:11).

The word translated “cleansed” in the KJV of Daniel 8: 14 is translated as s appears as “rightful state, “reconsecrated,” “restored,” in other versions. It is a form of the Hebrew trigram ts d q. The Hebrew word “nitsdaq,” to which we refer, is also used in a different form in KJV Daniel 12:3: “And they that turn many to “righteousness” shall shine as the stars forever.” Young’s Literal Translation of Daniel 12: 3 says “…and those justifying the multitude…”

It’s the same word used in Isaiah 53:11 when it says the righteous servant will “justify” many. Isaiah 45:25 says that all Israel will be “justified” in the Lord. Same word. Psalms 19:9 uses the word to describe the “righteous” judgments of God. All the other appearances of the word refer to the righteousness or justification of people or God. Daniel 8:14 uses it to refer to the justification of the sanctuary. The Greek Old Testament, known as the LXX, translates the word in Daniel 8: 14 with a word that means “cleansed” as in the KJV.

Adventist Today and Spectrum are two independent publications that do not officially speak for the SDA Church. Each informs as to news that is not easily available, and each evaluates the SDA Church. Both publish a journal that is sent to a few people. Both publish on the Internet that is available to a much larger group of people. Those two publications are different. On May 17, 2026, Spectrum is expected to post a unique article that differs from its past publications in two aspects. You may read that article at: https://spectrummagazine.org/views/opinion/a-catholic-and-an-adventist-disagree-over-trinity-interpretations-yet-find-friendship-online/

	* One of the unusual aspects is that the article was written by two different people. I am only one of those people.

	* The second unique aspect of that article is that the second author is a devout Roman Catholic ho posts on Club Adventist under the name Gustave. Here he freely posts his overall thinking of Adventism. My position is that it is helpful to understand how other people think about us.

NOTE: I have decided to unlock this thread even though the article has not yet been posted. I expect that it will be posted later today--Sunday, the 17th.
