Death & Immortal Soul
phkrause reacted to Gregory Matthews for a topic
As most SDAs do not fully understand the SDA teaching on death and the immortal soul, I thought that I would comment on it. Depending on the version of SDA Belief's that you are citing, this teaching is found in either number 25 or number 26. It reads in part, as follows: "The wages of sin is death. But God, who alone is immortal, will grant eternal life to His redeemed. Until that day death is an unconscious state for all people. . . .. NOTE: I have deleted the part about the second resurrection. The above teaching says nothing as to whether or not people have a soul. It simply says that people are unconscious at death. The fundamental principle of that teaching is that at death people are in an unconscious state. Most Adventists in the U. S. have understood the teaching to say that humans do not have a soul that can live outside of the body and survives death. Again, that is not what the teaching says. In actual fact, you can be a SDA and believe that humans have a soul that survives death. A now deceased, major SDA Leader in Europe held this belief. He is held in deep respect today. He probably did more to advance the cause of Adventism in his home nation than any other person has accomplished.1 point -

Interesting Travel

The Kuna man who rowed my tree trunk to the island spoke English. He informed me that most of the people in the village were attending a meeting to decide on the discipline of one of the teen women. She had been caught in what he said was kissing her boyfriend. such was not allowed in their culture. Later that afternoon, as I was walking through the village I came upon two women, with one very small female child. neither spoke English. I commented on the child and reached for her. I took the child, pressed her close to my chest and made appropriate comments. Shortly I felt a very warm liquid on my chest. She was not used to this strangely dressed man, who made strange sounds holding her. She reacted as expected. As she was not wearing proper clothing, the wet imprint on my shirt was open for all to see.1 point -

Her is more information on Jea n Nussbaum: https://encyclopedia.adventist.org/article?id=AH5Z NOTE : The book, Crusader for Freedom, by Gertrude Loewen, has been published about his life. I have ordered a copy in an attempt to see what his understanding of the nature of humans was. This book is out of print. But, it is available as a used copy from many sources, including Amazon. However, the price range for this used book changes by a factor of ten.1 point -

I have not been able with certainty to discover the name of the person I mentioned in an above post. It might have been Jean Nussbaum? I do not know. In any case, the link below will take you to a link that will surprise all, a SDA leader who worked closely with a Pope!. There is Internet material on that aspect that tells more than the following article. https://aidlr.org/history.php1 point -

Justice for Genesis #2
phkrause reacted to Gregory Matthews for a topic
Throughout the history of Adventism, Earth Origins, Creationism and the teachings of the early chapters of Genesis have been considered important, worthy of discussion and challenging in their thought. Early Adventists who were involved in this issue included George McCready Price who lacked scientific expertise and promoted a creationism that is largely dismissed today. Herald Clark and Frank L. Marsh were the first SDA scientists to take up this issue. Their views have been eclipsed by more developed science and the racial views of one would not be tolerated today. SDAs may like to think that they stand alone in believing in a creation by God. This is in error. The history of Creationism is replete with clergy, scientists and others who believed in a creation by God. Carol Hill is an author who believes in a creation by God and in the Biblical Record. The American Scientific Affiliation is composed of scientists who accept the Bible as authoritative. Their beliefs may not agree with aspects of SDA beliefs. But, they believe in a creator God and the authority of the Bible. See: https://network.asa3.org/page/ASAbeliefs I think that we do ourselves a disservice when we dismiss such people due to the fact that we may not agree with every aspect of their understanding of the Biblical record. Adventism has its own members who have authored books that present Creation in terms of a God who creates, but may differ is some aspects of general Adventist belief. Such books have often included Brian Bull and Fritz Guy as authors. Avondale Press and Oak and Acorn are official SDA institutions that publish cutting edge material that is probably unknown to the majority of SDA members. In short, Adventist material is available that explores issues of science and creation in terms of today. In more recent times, I have seen SDA scientists moving toward a positron of Intelligent Design (ID), for the creation of Earth. As I understand ID, it simply posits a creator God. Just about everything else about creation, is up for discussion. As I understand ID, there is no requirement as to what one should believe as to God’s creation and Biblical teachings. I would prefer to see ID in Adventism with some boundaries on beliefs in respect to the Biblical record. Justice for Genesis is a 301-page book authored by the Adventist scientist J. C. Walton, and published by Andrews University Press. It may be purchased from Amazon. In my opinion, it is outstanding in that it is unlike anything ever published before by the Adventist press. As I understand the author, in 62 pages he argues for Intelligent Design. However, as is clarified in other sections, he is clearly proposing a Genesis that is authoritative. He spends another some 100 pages on this aspect of his understanding of the place the Bible has on this issue. In the two final sections the author discusses archaeology and God as Creator. I have not yet read those sections. I will likely post more after I have read them. For now, I will simply say that this book is an excellent book that is valuable in understanding creation, God and the Genesis record.1 point -
Christian Nationalism

Its flying under the radar for most Adventist, but if you look at the news you see it coming in with the new leaders. We know the “Image of the Beast” is a political power that begins to compelling observance of or compliance with a law, or obligation.of a religious nature, We know what the words “Christain Nationlism” mean by now and how its surging. We do not need to look far to see the implementation of the image in the news, with leaders in Cabinet position, Supreme Court, of the Senate and Congress being filled by followers of the original Beast. So the image of the Beast, has been readied, I don’t think I need to say more as we watch it rise.1 point -

Seventh-day Adventists do not generally use the term "original sin." Therefore, they may not generally understand what it means to one who is using it. Yet, that term has a meaning that is important to understanding the nature of Christ. SDAs deal with that issue without using the term. Hobie, do you understand what is taught by SDAs on that subject?1 point -

Hobie, If you want to know what the Roman Catholic Church teaches, go to its published teachings. Those are published in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. My reference is the 904 page 2nd edition, published in Rome. The following are quotations from that book: numbers in bold (435) Are the numbers of the official teaching of the Church. 468 . . . He who was crucified in the flesh, our Lord Jesus Christ, is true God, Lord of glory, and one of the Holy Trinity. 476 Since the word became flesh in assuming a true humanity, Christ's body was finite. . . . 471 Jesus Christ possesses two natures, one divine, and the other human, not confused, but united in the person of God's son. Hobie, I think you have been confused by the Catholic teaching of Original Sin. Adam was created without it. By his sin, the human race became contaminated by it. See 404, 405 & 406. As I understand the Catholic teaching, Christ was born with the human nature of Adam, IOW without original sin. Gustave, please correct any misstatement that I may have made.1 point
