Members phkrause
Gail this is what the SDABC has to say for Nitre: [Heb. nether; Akkadian nitiru, loan words from the Egyptian niry, which is the ancestor also of the English term "natron."] "Nitre" means saltpeter, or potassium or sodium nitrate. However, nether probably describes a mineral alkali known as natron, found in abundance in Egypt. It is composed largely of bicarbonate of soda and was used for washing (Jer 2:22; RSV, "lye"). The use of natron with vinegar is as inappropriate and wasteful as the singing of merry songs to one who has a heavy heart, for the chemical reaction between the 2 yields a salt that has the qualities of neither of the 2 original substances (Prov 25:20; the RSV following the LXX has the rendering "wound," assuming that netheq should be read instead of nether). pk Quote phkrause Obstinacy is a barrier to all improvement. - ChL
Administrators Gail Posted November 26, 2009 Author Administrators Share Posted November 26, 2009 Wikipedia says that it was used for cleaning, even as toothpaste and mouthwash. Then it goes on to say this: Quote: The mineral was used in Egyptian mummification because it absorbs water and behaves as a drying agent. Moreover, when exposed to moisture the carbonate in natron increases pH, which creates a hostile environment for bacteria. In some cultures natron was thought to enhance spiritual safety for both the living and the dead. Natron was added to castor oil to make a smokeless fuel, which allowed Egyptian artisans to paint elaborate artworks inside ancient tombs without staining them with soot. Interesting! I can see why the Bible would call it wasteful to mix it with vinegar, although vinegar is also used for cleaning purposes. To mix the two would give you a big FIZZ! Members phkrause
Imagine only 10 days. But I'm thinking that they already were on this diet from when they came. But from what I understand it took they about 3-4 months to walk from Judah to Babylon, and they probably were not fed very well on the way. So the King figured that on his food they would be revidalized. But Daniel and his buddies wouldn't go for that and ate good food and since they already were pretty fit they were able to look and perk up better than the others. So it does pay to eat your veges. pk Quote phkrause Obstinacy is a barrier to all improvement. - ChL
