Administrators Gail Posted March 17, 2008 Author Administrators Share Posted March 17, 2008 Jesus was trying to be alone to mourn the death of John the Baptist when the crowd of 5000+ found him. cricket
Really?! Wow. I've been reading a lot about the feeding of the 5,000 and of the 4,000. Then, of Him walking on water to meet His disciples...no wonder He was so irritated that they still did not understand nor have faith enough to feed the 5,000... or to calm the waves... or to believe He wasn't a ghost... No wonder He left them alone in the boat and He stayed back on the hillside!
Administrators Gail Posted March 17, 2008 Author Administrators Share Posted March 17, 2008 Talking about the disciples not "getting it"... On Sabbath we were blessed to have Ty Gibson speak. He was talking about the significance of Mary's gift to Jesus of the expensive perfume. She was at the party Simon hosted for Jesus, with Lazarus in attendance. Simon had been healed by Jesus of leprosy, and Lazarus had been raised from the dead. First off, Simon put Mary down because of the type of sinner she was. Judas then piped in about the cost of the ointment, because it could have been sold and given to the poor. But I found it interesting that they each complained about what was their own pet sins: Simon thought himself a better person than Mary, but EGW points out in Desire of Ages that he was the one who first led her into sin via sexual abuse. Judas complained about the cost of the perfume, but the Bible points out later that he was the one who held the disciples' money bag. IOW, he kept some of the money for himself. Mary anointed Jesus' head, body and feet, mingling the ointment with her tears. She couldn't wait for His burial to do this task, but wanted to do it while He was alive, so that He would notice and know her love for Him. Later a 3rd liquid, that of Jesus' blood, would join the perfume and the tears. He took that aroma with Him to the Cross. While everyone else abandonned Him, while He was being tortured, while He couldn't see beyond the tomb, He could still smell the aroma of Mary's gift. He knew that His death was not in vain. Mary got it! She was the only one who understood why He was there and what His mission was. It's no wonder that He declared that what she had done would be spoken of wherever the gospel was preached. Members phkrause
This is what EGW says of this verse in the commentary's: "Symbolically, the blood put on the "right ear" sanctified that organ to hear the word of the Lord; put on the "right hand," it sanctified the hands of the Priest for its mediatorial work; put on the "right foot," it sanctified his walk of life as an example to others. In other words, the consecrated life (blood) of the sacrifice the priest had offered was returned to him, that his life might be devoted to the service of the Lord." pkrause Quote phkrause Obstinacy is a barrier to all improvement. - ChL

Administrators Gail Posted April 11, 2008 Author Administrators Share Posted April 11, 2008 When you think about it, those appendages are kinda handy! It's hard to hold a sword without a thumb! It reminds me of the war in Liberia (& Sierra Leone) where my son is now. Just like in the film, Blood Diamond, the soldiers would frequently chop off the hands or arms of their victims, asking them if they wanted "long sleeves" (cut off at wrists) or "short sleeves" (cut off at elbows). A person without arms cannot hold a gun or knife and fight back. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
