"Mystery Flavor" in chips has Portland man fuming

A "mystery flavor" in a new bag Doritos has one local man crying foul. We talked to him about what's got him so riled up.

Have you seen this at the grocery store?

The unusual look and name has people picking it up. It's part of Doritos new marketing campaign to "name this mystery flavor" but what's in it has one Portland man mad he even gave it a second look.

"We figured they were coming up with some type of new flavor," said Richard Freimark. When he spotted the slickly packaged bag of chips, he thought it looked so different from all the other Doritos standbys he likes -- why not give it a try.

"It wasn't until we tried them and they tasted like beef that we read the ingredient panel to discover they, in fact, have beef," said Freimark.

They contain beef and beef and beef tallow, which is a fat made from beef. That bothers Richard because, "We don't eat red meat.”

Richard says his gout is so bad he considers himself largely a vegetarian who avoids red meat completely since it makes his condition worse. His family doesn’t eat beef either. And the one place he says they just assumed was meat-free? The chip aisle.

"You don't expect them to put beef on a corn chip," Freimark said.

We called Frito Lay which makes Doritos.

A corporate spokesperson gave us this statement: "We recognize there are some ingredients of which consumers are concerned so we provide nutrition information on fritolay.com. However the ingredient panel is an important tool for consumers, particularly at the point of purchase."

"It's opened our eyes that you really have to read the ingredients on every package," said Freimark.

Richard says, of course, eating the beefy chips isn't the end-of-the-world for him, but he does think vegetarians or people who avoid beef for religious reasons-- would appreciate a clearer warning.
