Amelia
Obama Slams Faith 'Stealers' By GINGER ADAMS OTIS Post Correspondent June 24, 2007 HARTFORD, Conn. - Sen. Barack Obama waged a holy war on the Christian right and slammed Guantanamo Bay yesterday. Thousands packed the Civic Center to see the Illinois freshman address a convention for the liberal, 1.2 million-member United Church of Christ. Obama recounted his own introduction to religion as a community organizer in Chicago's South Side. But he soon turned his ire on the Christian right. "At every opportunity they've told evangelical Christians that Democrats disrespect their values and dislike their church, while suggesting to the rest of the country that religious Americans care only about issues like abortion and gay marriage," he said. Obama also said "we should close Guantanamo Bay and stop tolerating the torture of our enemies because it's not who we are." The senator was also picking up support in New York. The head of the city's 9,000-member correction-officers union threw his personal support behind Obama. Norman Seabrook told The Post he's "willing to stand behind Barack Obama because of his truth and sincerity." Seabrook stopped short of a formal endorsement because his executive board had yet to vote. Is this frightening? I think it is....I see more and more where the majority of Americans, especially church goers, are cemented in thier faith's values and can not look at science or objective evidence that counter's or clarifys thier faiths position. I see that here on C/A as well.... So what is it that makes Obama 'frightening' as opposed to say the religious right? Woody
Quote: religious Americans care only about issues like abortion and gay marriage," he said. Well Neil ... from my viewpoint ... he is knocking Christians by making false characterizations. I do not believe this fits my view of Christianity. Is this really the only thing "religious Americans care about"? Even the right cares about more than this. You have to read between the lines and where he is going with this bashing of Christians. Ooooh....So to follow out this principle of "reading between the lines", in your case, I would have to say- - you don't want to know what his actual views are - You want to surmize what you think he is saying - you want to feed your Point of View, - denigrate the viewpoint of a new political person without ever hearing what he has to say. Yeah, I think I get this principle perfectly..... Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. Dr. Shane
Conservatives like Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck slam liberals, not directly Democrats. Beck often talks about his grandfather who apparently was an active Democrat. However when we talk about "religious" conservatives, the attacks on Democrats are even less direct. "Religious" conservative attack liberals' position on issues: Gay marriage, no-fault divorce, legal abortion, legalized gambling, etc. Under the philosophy or "if the shoe fits, wear it" Democrats may feel attacked by "religious" conservatives but I have not often heard a "religious" conservative actually attack the Democratic party or its members by using a party name.
