Dr. Shane
I go out by myself all the time at work. Of course I do not work on a crew with others - I run between projects trying to manage various crews. When I go out for lunch by myself, I am just looking for something healthy. That may just be a bean burrito at Taco Bell or a Vege sub at Subway. When I go out to eat with the family, a friend, business associate or fellow church member, I look for a nice environment. I like ethnic places like Chinese, Mexican or the old fashion American diner. I also want something acceptable to be on the menu. (Mexican places often put lard in their beans) I am looking for a low-fat, semi-healthy meal. Including fish in my diet, it normally isn't hard to find such a place to eat. Moderators Denise Posted October 20, 2007 Moderators Share Posted October 20, 2007 Well, we haven't eaten out for a long time now....BUT, we are having ladies night out in our church on Wednesday night at a restaurant I never heard of.....can't remember the name, but it's a vegeterian restaurant, and a few of our members have eaten there already, and say they have excellent food, including vegan foods.....so I am ready to go out to eat!!!!! I think one of the last restaurants our family ate at was a restaurant called Harmony. Yummy! They had such good food, and they were located close to Atlanta, GA. Had a long drive, but it was worth it!! They had the best brown rice I ever tasted! And they had tasty vegeterian dishes like, sweet and sour chick balls up to vegeterian sea food (YUCK). olger
I look for vegan stuff. Hard to find, but with some effort it can be done. Veggie taco from TB fresco style, hold the meat and add beans and guacamole. Shaner, does TB use lard in their beans? oG Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.." Dr. Shane
Taco Bell is safe. I don't think many chain restaurants use lard. It is the small family restaurants that pride themselves on "authentic" Mexican food that use lard. I always ask, although I can taste it if I am misinformed. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... ChildofChrist
I like to go to Olive Garden. I was there earlier this month for lunch with my daughter as her birthday was coming up. I would even go there alone. Great pasta and salad. At TB, I usually take it to go then find a shade tree to park under. Or even a baked potato from Wendy's. When I travel that is something I'm more likely to do so as to enjoy a meal and get back on the road. Depends on my schedule if I go in or catch something on the fly. I will often go out by myself especially when I can't think of anyone that enjoys the same type of food to be available. My favorite is Indian. Moderators LynnDel Posted October 27, 2007 Moderators Share Posted October 27, 2007 What type of food do you like? --All kinds, particularly if a carcass is not involved. and what will you usually get? -- Salad, soup, vegetarian something. Usually not dessert. I like trying new places, because I am often pleasantly surprised. Does your choice differ if you are working at lunch time? -- Definitely. Under those conditions, it is usually Taco Bell or Subway, unless I am with a group. and have you ever gone out by yourself within the last 2 years? -- Yup, unless my book or computer counts as a second person. Most recent visit: Dos Coyotes, where I had a Howlin' Tostada. Next time I will have them leave off the refried beans and use black beans instead. Moderators Nan Posted October 27, 2007 Moderators Share Posted October 27, 2007 Eating out, we have the stipulation that the food must not have had a mother. Most recently in Vancouver we were delighted at the variety of small cafe type restaurants available near our hotel. At home, we rarely go out to eat - having a very good chef on site, LOL. Dottie
I go out when traveling--usually Shoney's, where we can get a salad. But now it's really hard to go out, because hubby can't have gluten. And the only type of food he ever liked to eat out was Italian. . . I went out in August, when son and I traveled to a friend's b'day party. nuff sed
In Orlando try Garden Cafe which is a mostly Vegan Chinese Restaurant. In Los Angeles I like Happy Family Chinese Vegetarian Restaurant.(Atlantic Ave.)......This place is (or was when I was there about 5 years ago) an "all you can eat for 9.95" place.. It is not buffet. You indicate what you want from the menu, after you finish they bring you the menu again ...until you can't eat any more........... We drove 85 miles from Loma Linda to LA for supper... We liked it so much that we went back the next day...
Guest gem
I dine out once in a while. I know a few really good places in BC. When am out, I usually order Western-Chinese style food. Same thing when I take out something...if tied up at work. I love to cook - if not busy and tired.
Neil D
Sometimes it's hard for me to choose.... I like to avoid the meats entirely.... If I find a vegetarian restaurant, I will go there...everytime...They usually have a variety of fixin's that are usually good...Once in a while, I will get some "dog dish" and it's awful, but I have been able to avoid that by asking the waitress/waiter. And usually, I have never had it before... THis last year, I have been on the East Coast a lot and live on the West Coast. And the food that has been fixed seems different to my mind. Favorite, aka most frequented restaurent- Cracker Barrel...mostly for breakfasts...and it's rich food...and sometimes, it's the ol' "I-want-every-grease-calorie-available-to-me" comfort food.... Shoneys is supposed to be good..but I have not been there...yet. West Coast- Olive Garden tis the best Restuarent, IMHO.... And the only type of food he ever liked to eat out was Italian. . . I went out in August, when son and I traveled to a friend's b'day party. If you want to have an amazing dining experience and still stick to vegan or vegetarian meal, select any fine restaurant where you'd like to experience their food... and when the waiter comes to take your order ask the following question: "Would you please ask your chef if he would be willing to create a special vegetable plate? We are celebrating with a rare night out, and if he would be a bit creative, I would really appreciate it." Then settle back and prepare to be surprised with a gustatory delight. Most chefs at fine restaurants when faced with such a challenge, and a respectful nod to their culinary skills, will prepare you the most delightful vegetarian dinner you could possibly ask for. Nothing bland, or common, about it. I've had chefs at 5 star restaurants make a special trip to my table to see if what they had come up with was to my satisfaction. Ellen
You hit on a good question. Especially since I just went out yesterday with 10 other ladies. We have started something in our community- every month we pick a restaurant and a date to have lunch out. We had a buffet at a Ramada Hotel here in Belleville, that's the second time we picked that place, but we ate at an italian restaurant last month and had a takeout-picnic the month before. We had a potluck picnic at one of the ladies' places in July. That was the best attended, but having to prepare food and stay for cleanup took away all the purpose of eating out. It had an interresting beginning, but I don't want to hog the line!!
Ellen
Nan, your stipulation "Eating out, we have the stipulation that the food must not have had a mother." reminds me of my mom who told the kitchen at her nursing home, "you don't have to kill something to feed me!" Moderators Nan Posted October 31, 2007 Moderators Share Posted October 31, 2007 Ellen, your mother may be in a nursing home but she is obviously still very 'with it'. Dottie
Clio - - A 5-star restaurant? Not part of my lifestyle. Hubby thinks Olive Garden is eating uptown. I used to ask for vegetable platters when I was a child and we went out with the whole (extended) family for dinner on Mothers' Day; sure wasn't what you describe! One little bowl of this, and one little bowl of that, etc. Things must have changed since then. . .
Clio
Well, a 5 star is hard to come by in Alaska... but even a fine dining establishment where one might go for that special once a year outing will provide a sumptuous vegetarian meal if asked. The trick is to not ask for a "vegetable plate". They take you at your word. You should ask if the chef would be willing to provide you with a vegetarian meal rather than a "vegetable plate", and leave him room to be creative and show off a little... I've gotten things like a plated savory custard with steamed asparagus spears topped with hollandaise sauce, stuffed mushrooms, baby carrots in an orange glaze sauce, or a wedge of swiss onion pie. It usually runs around $16 per plate... Clio Quote A heart where He alone has first place.
