The Stay on topic Rule is really not valid. As with converstations with real people face to face topics tend to wonder all over the place. Rarely does a conversation stay on topic

I do believe that, unless there is a true criminal act involved, people should not go to an employer, potential employer, Pastor, spouse, child etc over comments made here.

AMEN to that.

I disagree. If the topic of a thread is say, baking bread. And then the thread for some strange reason takes on a heated debate about harvesting wheat, I feel right in asking that the topic return to baking bread or begin another thread on harvesting wheat.

There has been absolutely NO desire on the part of the powers that be to keep most threads on topic from what I personally have observed. And I don't think it should be enforced except for the most severe cases. IN those severe cases ... it would be nice to have an official warning before an entire thread gets sent to Cyber Hell. Again ... I would suggest that whatever is done ... that it be consistent.

I would think that if a thread has severely gone off the path ... that a few kind reminders from anyone would be appreciated and should be enough. But if not ... then a moderator should feel free to make a suggestion.

Redwood, you keep repeating this idea that there is never any in-thread editing/moderation, and that threads are simply deleted if they go astray. That might be your experience, but it's definitely not been mine, either as a moderator or a participant. Quite often things have been edited or corrected, and usually a PM sent to explain the reason. You may have seen a couple of instances where the mod (a) just lost patience with the participants and felt it was simpler to remove the whole thread, or (B) the thread topic itself was offensive or inappropriate and removing the whole thread was the only course of action or © the mod didn't have time to do line-by-line editing on many posts. All the mods do this for free, and most have families and day jobs - there are lots of things that would be ideal, but it's necessary to be realistic in what we expect.

But, I am sure there could be SOMEONE here that could fill that role IF needed. This would not have to be one assigned person. It could be anyone the party chose. A rep from admin could be a silent observer only though. I think the opportunity would be seldom. I just see that we need those in your position to ENCOURAGE it to happen . . .

I happen to know of some here who are able and willing to assist if called. But that is a further step down the Matt.18 road. What needs to be encouraged is to have the two people who have disagreements getting together on their own ... in private ... first. And this need could have teeth in it if necessary.

That is an excellent idea, and one which would place C/A on solid ground, and in a good light in the eyes of many. This should be a place for reconciliation, not for old fights and wrongs that have not been righted.

You may be right in your observation Bravus. My observation may be strongly colored by some severe bad cases noticed. I suppose it is the bad ones that stick in ones craw.

Ok lets say the argument went to White bread vs Whole wheat bread which is more heathy. Or is it harmful to eat raw bread dough during the raising cycle. Sort of off topic but still about bread sort of. cool2

Stan you know that if the topic gets that long there would have had to be some really hot fights going on to get the threads that long. More so if the topic expanded two or more pages in a single day.

If you cut it off ... they will just continue it on another thread.

No, Neil, you don't understand what I am referring to. Not a question of being more 'valuable.' You really, really don't understand in this case. I encourage you to be slow to judge.

Then help me to understand why someone would sue for a bunch of cheap words.....all over someone's supposed reputation on a virtual board?

YOu want a volenteer here, 7 days aweek, to act as mediator???

Do you know how much they get paid in real life??? Why would one want to do it for free????

I am sorry, but the practicalities of this are impractical...

I too have had threads hijacked before...But I have also started 2 threads, on the same subject, at the same time and watched them go totally different directions....and it was fun....

Sometimes it is a necessity for the origional poster to abandon a thread, and start one more specific to the origional thread...It is also an option....Just have to be tolerant to the people and how they take it....

How about ONE hour a week. Even that would be excessive. For the need for this service would be very small. There are some here that would be willing to volunteer when the need arrived if a friend was in need.

You know Neil ... that is a revolutionary thought. And I think that might be appropriate in some cases particularly when some refuse to be gracious.

I have said this before...In an ADVENTIST board? Surely you jest!

Adventists have more opinions on the subject of law, rules, advise, and can drone on and on about those subjects....And when it comes to justice, the desire is nearly endless...You want evidence of this...Just look at this thread...RuLES, JUSTICE, LAWSUITS, ....

Frankly Redwood, people who do as we have done here are desparately sick. Problem is, they don't want to know that they are sick...Which makes them even sicker than the world....Jesus had a remedy for such things, but people are not willing to administer the best part of Justice....that is, mercy....

Mercy....it's something that NOONE is willing to extend when they have been hurt and there is NO posiblity of accepting it. NOONE is willing to do that....No one.

And I, for one, am sick of this....

Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve.

Have to admit, being someone who doesn't work for the church *does* make me feel safer around here... which I think says something sad about both the forum and the church.
