I didn't draw a ray diagram, just winged it, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if I guessed wrong.

Lemme see here... (scribbles frantically on scrap paper)

I do believe you're right. She will see more of the room but not more of herself.

Things to consider:

Is the floor level? If the floor slopes downwards as Alice steps away from the mirror she would be able to see more and more of her head. And more and more of the lower part of her body until she could see her feet if the floor sloped upwards away from the mirror.

Is the mirror flat? If not all sorts of strange things could occur.

If the floor was level and the mirror flat then David is correct.

But we are not told this (and judging by the strange things that happened to Alice it is most likely that the mirror was not standard) so I go for delta as the answer.

OK, so Alice stands back but doesnt see more of herself just more around her. BUT if she stands closer she also doesnt see more of herself just more of one part of herself. Where is the ideal?

1. Use a longer mirror

or

2. Use a handheld mirror (which you can move up or down or left or right or tilt)

or

3, Get something to stand on to lift your eyes higher in compariso to the bottom (and top) of the mirror.

or

4. Grow taller (this seemed to an option in the Lewis Carroll stories)

Grow taller

I always wished I could grow taller!!

But since we can only see with our eyes and they are at the top of our bodies, we really can't see more of ourselves unless it is only one section at a time. Or, if we had magnificating eyes. teehe

Actually my wife has those.

She keeps telling me I need to lose weight, but it's really her eyes...

What I want to know is when David looks in the mirror, and sees the liberal smudge, how that affects his self image.....?

angelnot

Doesn't it sound similar to CVA? When the left brain is affected the result will be right-sided weakness, OPPOSITE result. Well, I hope is not the same with any other things.

I guess one could say that this give some validation to a person, of any gender, says that s/he is not complete!

Melvin, tell me more about this "mad hatter" comment you made! Puleeeze?????

(Rolls eyes) No, no, no. It does not matter whether she were standing three feet away from the mirror or three hundred feet away. She would STILL see the identical image reflected in the mirror, because the image would be reflected STRAIGHT BACK. The only way to INCREASE what Alice would see LOOKING IN THE MIRROR would be to have a curved surface on the mirror. Of course, at 300 ft., it is possible that irregularities in the mirror's surface would skew the result. For that matter, Alice could be three light-years away from the mirror, and the image reflected back to her from a flat mirror would be identical.

This, of course, applies particularly to collimated light, such as emitted by a laser. In nature, light is not collimated, so random light rays can reach the surface of a flat mirror at varying angles, thus giving the appearance of a wider field of view.

Well duh, I know the image would be identical. The question was would she see more or less of herself. I took that to mean as a whole. And I went with, she was looking in a totally flat mirrior.(with or without minor flaws in the surface)

Nope, I don't think that's right, David. As she moves further away a wider 'cone' (well, cone-like but with a square or rectangular cross section like the mirror) of light will come in and hit the mirror and be visible to her. I'll try to draw a diagram in a minute.

Test it with a mirror now. You can see more of the room as you move away from the mirror and less as you move closer.

FYI I am a complex mix of numerous elements, which does not lend itself to such simplistic categorization. [snipped due to the long explanation that covers David's embarrassment of the actual liberal for what he truely is.

(BIG EYE ROLL)

No, no, no, NOT a CONE!!! That ONLY applies where the reflecting surface is curved. As I mentioned earlier, given a collimated light source, the distance is immaterial. However, since in nature, light as typically emitted is NOT collimated, stray, read extraenous rays of light can reach the mirror and be 'bounced' back at various angles. This can give the appearance of a wider field of view.

One need not draw a diagram to establish the foregoing. The student need only be somewhat familiar with the principles of optics and the properties of light.
