Offshore Drilling a Potent Issue for McCain

Most likely the USA wants to be less dependent on Middle East oil, that is perhaps one reason to do more drilling in the US I suppose.

That is a big part but Venezuela is a bigger provider of oil in the US market and a bigger enemy than any Middle East country with the exception of Iran.

However energy independence for the US means a lot. Every dollar that flows out of the US for foreign oil means one less dollar in the pocket of some US worker. Foreign oil makes up a large portion of the US trade deficit.

the US would be better to put some of that investment in more drilling to put in infrastructure for alternative fuels.

The investment will come from the private sector. It looks for a return on its money. Drilling for more oil will give the quickest return. This will not be done with tax dollars but it will generate a lot of new tax revenue. The government could then use that new revenue to fund infrastructure for alternative fuels.

So basically...

  • Investors (private sector) will only invest in what promises a quick or hefty return on their investment.
  • Alternative fuels is not on the top of the list.
  • So who will invest in alternative fuels?
  • The government
  • Where does the government get the money?
  • From new revenues raised by taxes from new drilling

I don't think the Government should invest in alternative fuels. Surely the Government could make it very attractive for private enterprise to invest in alternative fuels by giving tax breaks, research and development funds, and other ways of attracting new investors.

The government can invest in alternative fuels by offering grants and "prizes" to the private sector to develop them. So it isn't government employees actually doing the R&D but it is government funding.
