Moderators Bravus Posted December 30, 2004 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 My older daughter, Cassie, is doing a science fair project for school. She has set up a short and simple web-based questionnaire to check out the general public’s knowledge of some basic ideas in science. While I know you guys aren’t exactly a representative sample of the general public, she and I would be very grateful if you’d be willing to complete the quiz, and encourage others to do likewise. It’ll only take a couple of minutes. Thanks very much, on Cassie’s behalf. Quote Truth is important
cricket
Bravus, this is fantastic! My daughter is currently working on her science fair project. It has to do with the golden ratio and how it relates to marketing. She's been thinking about doing her survey on-line, but we're not sure how to build the survey. What program did Cassandra use to create this? It looks a lot like the BASIC stuff I learned a couple of years ago. Any information you can give me would be great. I'm going to send this link to my family members. Maybe she can get a better sample that way! Go Cassie, go!!
Moderators Bravus Posted December 30, 2004 Author Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 Thanks Chrys, that's awesome. The wider it spreads the better sample she'll get, and the more interesting the results. She has 8 completed surveys already in just the half hour or so since we set it up, so hopefully she'll end up with a couple of hundred, with a wide range of ages, education levels and locations. Cass made the page in HotDog web editor, but any web editing software will do the job. Your daughter is also more than welcome to do a 'View Page Source' and copy, paste and edit our html to make her survey, if it's similar enough in approach. There are lots of great tutorials on the web for basic html. We had set it up to e-mail the results in, but that was messy, so we went to www.FormBuddy.com and used their free service that collates the results on their server. They have excellent instructions on how to set up the Form, which is the most complex bit of the page. (The Table looks complex but isn't really.) Then you just need somewhere to host it: most ISPs offer some free web space with your account, so check that out. I use CuteFTP to upload stuff, but there are lots of other ways. Hope that's helpful to you. Cassie really did do most of the development of the page herself, with just a little help on setting up the form. cricket
Thanks so much for the information. I've sent it out to 100 of my closest contacts! I do hope she's successful in her endeavors. I know what a grueling thing science fair projects can be. Come to think of it...I have two hungry mice in the garage to feed! My son is "training" them to run through a maze and he's at grandma's tonight! Off to the garage! Thanks again for all the information. I'll let you know how it turns out! Nicodema
No FAIR! I wanted to know what the answers were after I took the quiz so I could see what I did and did not get correct!!! Moderators Bravus Posted December 30, 2004 Author Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 Hmmm, maybe the 'thank you' page *should* contain the correct answers... Our little contribution to science education. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> I'll talk to Cass about it... Edit: OK, working on it... Moderators Bravus Posted December 30, 2004 Author Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 Now with added answery goodness on the Thank You page. If you've already done the quiz but want to see the answers, please DON'T do it again, just go straight here: http://www.ualberta.ca/~dgeelan/thankyou.html Quote Truth is important
cricket
Yahoo! I think I got all of them correct except the last one. Not bad. Thanks, Dr. Dave
Moderators Bravus Posted December 30, 2004 Author Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 of course, you realise providing answers to some of those questions could get me in trouble around here... Quote Truth is important

Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 30, 2004 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 Bravus: I completed the survey. When I clicked on the "ssubmit" I got a page that told me access was denied, I could not use "Form Buddy" services. I was using my home computers so it had nothing to do with government firewalls. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 30, 2004 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 I have now answered the questions. My office computer allowed me to submit them. I do not know what the problem was earlier. Quote Gregory
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 30, 2004 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 I got two wrong. One I knew was wrong when I submitted it, but I did not understand why it was wrong, so I answered according to my understanding. The other, I did not expect to get wrong. And, I do not understand why I was wrong. I will have to think about it some more. Quote Gregory
Moderators Bravus Posted December 30, 2004 Author Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 Gregory, thanks for the error report. One of my friends in Denmark had the same problem, and I'm trying to chase it up. On the one you got wrong, did you read the explanation of the answer? Was it unclear, or just not plausible to you? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Everyone else - thanks very much, she has 49 completed surveys as of this morning, and that's been through the deep dark night for North America. Amelia
I also got two wrong. I know nothing about electricity and I hate answering "I dont know". LOL As to humans hunting dinosaurs....there were animals mentioned in the bible that could be considered dinosaurs so I figured they could've been hunted; ergo humans hunting dinos is correct. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue1.gif" alt="" /> Oh and having the answers it good but having a score would also be good. That way I wouldnt "have" to remember what questions I answered which way. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 30, 2004 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 Bravus: On the one where I knew I was wrong, but did not know why, the answer page provided me with the reasoning that I had forgotten. On the one where I was wrong, the answer page did not convince me. Perhaps I did not understand the answer page? Perhape I just needed a more detailed explaination than could be given on that short answer, answer page? I went on the Internet in an attempt to find a statement on the underlying fundamental issue that would clairfy it for me and failed to find anything that even addressed the issue, let alone clairfied it for me. So, at the moment I do not know. I will probably go home and see what some basic physics texts say on the subject, if they even address it. cricket
Bravus, Do you think Cassie will be able to use any of these comments in her report. They certainly are interesting. My mother-in-law, a chemist by trade, a biologist by training, said she sure hopes she didn't make a fool of herself by claiming to love science and getting something wrong! I don't know her "score" but I'm sure she got them all right. As for me, well this has certainly repiqued my interest in creating html documents. I'm learning all sorts of new things computer-wise! bevin
The only one I was very uncertain about was the relative proportions of Na+ Cl- and NaCl in sea water. All such solutions are in an equilibrium, with some Na+ Cl- combining to form NaCl and some NaCl breaking apart to form Na+ Cl-. I had to guess which side of the equilibrium had the majority at seawater salinity levels. /Bevin
Moderators Bravus Posted December 30, 2004 Author Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 Good call on the science, bevin, but as it turns out sodium is one of the most soluble cations and chlorine one of the most soluble anions, so between them the solubility equilibrium is a very, very long way in the direction of the Na+(aq) and Cl-(aq) ions versus crystals. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted December 30, 2004 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2004 Bravus: The one where I was wrong, and did not understand the answer was on the speed of an electron question. [NOTE: I do not remember the exact question.] I have since found my answer on the Internet. It seems that an electromagnetic wave propogates at the speed of light, but that is NOT the movement of individual electrons. A discussion of the time value in a system where individual electrons have to absorb and emit energy has clairfied it in my mind. I was wrong. Your answer was correct. Quote Gregory
Amelia
Was the question about individual electrons? I also answered "speed of light". I believe I read the question as electricity speed vs electron speed.
