And if we'd take all the marriage laws out of the political realm, EVERYONE could be happy. Your religion could define what marriage means to you, and other peoples' relgion can define what marriage means to them. There is an argument to be made for that but it is a bit extreme. There are certain common religious principles that governments incorporate into civil law. Most religions ban murder. No doubt about it, a ban on murder is a religious law. Of course, that doesn't mean that civil governments cannot ban murder since religions also ban them. Many religions also ban lying and most civil governments have used that principle to pass laws against fraud and perjury. Bankruptcy laws are based on the religious principle of forgiveness.
