Michelle
Have you ever heard this term? Is it only used in certain circles, or certain parts of the country? (refers to "veggie meats" or meat analogs.) Just heard it yesterday from someone who says "every one" of her vegetarian friends calls it shmeat, and I've lived a lot of places near a lot of vegetarians and have never heard it. She's from Boston, if that helps. M
Moderators LynnDel Posted December 31, 2004 Moderators Share Posted December 31, 2004 There are tons of vegetarians in California, and I've never heard the term "shmeat." Perhaps its use will spread. LD Quote LD
Neil D
Ever hear what a "sevey" is? I only heard of this term this past week..... Moderators Bravus Posted December 31, 2004 Moderators Share Posted December 31, 2004 I think 'sevey' or 'sevvy' is an Australian thing, as far as I know. We make 'breakfast' into 'breakie' and lots and lots of other words get the 'take of the last part and add an 'e' sound' treatment. So if you have buffalo wings made of 'shmeat', could you call one a 'schwing!'? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Quote Truth is important

Nicodema
I used to call the SDA church the "House of the Seven". I just thought it sounded cool, was all. Quote "After such knowledge, what forgiveness?" -- T.S. Eliot

cricket
I wonder if it's sort of a, "Meat? --Shmeat!" thing.

Guest
FROM THE PSEUDO DICTIONARY.. shmeat - The fake sort of meat served in cafeterias. Similar to "mystery meat," but you know all too well what it is (or what it is supposed to be). Can take the place of beef, chicken, turkey, and virtually any other meat. Originates from saying, "meat, shmeat." e.g., "When I walked into the cafeteria today, I thought I saw chicken on the menu. However, to my dismay it turned out the be shmeat." Nicodema
Well there was also the House of the Six. The two were part of a series of cards I was making, kind of like Tarot cards but with my own symbols and meanings. One of them showed a figure shrouded in white with darkness pouring from its eyes and the other one was somewhat opposite, a figure shrouded in black with light pouring from its eyes. Each symbolised the juxtaposition of what the world saw versus the reality of the matter, with the garments being the misconception of the world and the eyes being the Truth of the matter. But here's the funny thing, I can't recall which was which. I'm pretty certain the white garments with the darkness eyes were the House of the Six (which basically represented the Beast), but it was so long ago -- and during a rather upheaved time in my life -- that I can't be entirely certain. Moderators LynnDel Posted December 31, 2004 Moderators Share Posted December 31, 2004 My mother buys something called "Veat" at Raley's. It's frozen vegemeat, pressed into a shape of a plucked chicken, somewhat flattened. Its appearance is a bit disturbing, if you ask me - but not nearly as disturbing as watching how they process real chickens around here. Ugh. Halfstep Denise
Are you sure you really want to know what it means? Sounds a little like a word someone came up with to describe meat analogs in not the nicest of terms! Just a horrible thought! Now I've got to wash my mind out with soap!! Neil D
I remember that the community used to mutter about the Adventists, calling them "crackers".... Michelle
Fascinating. I didn't know if this was something from the non-SDA vegan community or something--maybe just east coast. Thanks for helping me out--I was very confused! (of course, that doesn't take much!) M
