Stan
Blaze mars New Year services (Friday, December 31, 2004) SEVENTH Day Adventist Church followers of four villages in Nadroga are still trying to come to terms with a fire that completely destroyed their church's Sunday school yesterday morning. According to police sources at the scene of the fire, they were treating the blaze, which started at 3am as arson. The corrugated iron and wooden building was being used by the villagers of Lomawai, Bavu, Nabau and Semo as a Sunday school. Esala Vakacegu Lomawai, the pastor of the Togovula SDA Church said he could not believe some people would intentionally burn the building as their church members prepared for their New Year services. Mr Lomawai said when the building was not being used for Sunday school lessons, it was converted into a community hall for villagers to come and enjoy the company of other church members. "Whenever we had a church function, we used the building as a resting place or for having our meals so this fire will really affect out New Year's celebrations." "The only thing that we can do is rebuild and our efforts will start as soon as possible," said Mr Lomawai. Mr Lomawai said collections for the reconstruction would begin during their New Year church service. He said the church had about 50 members, who were willing to assist in the reconstruction.
