No question about it. God was/is foolish to give people freedom. Look what it cost him.

Anyone aware of NICE? Apparently it's the organization in the UK that decides who lives or dies.

From: http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssHealthcareNews/idUSL765842520080807

Quote:
LONDON, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Kidney cancer patients should not be treated with four expensive new medicines on Britain's state-run National Health Service, the country's health cost-effectiveness watchdog said on Thursday.

The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) said Roche's (ROG.VX) Avastin, Bayer's (BAYG.DE) Nexavar, Pfizer's (PFE.N) Sutent and Wyeth's (WYE.N) Torisel could extend patients' lives by some months but were not cost-effective.

The drugs -- known generically as bevacizumab, sorafenib, sunitinib and temsirolimus -- should therefore not be a treatment option for advanced and/or metastatic kidney cancer, NICE said in its preliminary recommendation.

The decision fuels controversy about the way NICE rations treatment on the state health service in England and Wales, denying patients access to costly modern medicines that are used routinely in many countries, notably the United States.

Cancer Research UK said it raised questions about whether NICE's system of appraisal was appropriate for all types of drugs, especially when there were few alternative treatments.

NICE argues it has to make tough choices when deciding which drugs should be paid for and which not.

Great name for deciding who lives or dies.

I had an e-mail from an online friend that lives in Australia. Not in response to anything said here, just letting friends know they were moving. Wonder how this stuff happens to the vulnerable elderly in a civilized country.

Maybe it has to do with Socialized care. This is a retirement community for elderly.

Sounds like it is working well.

Two new managers in 7 weeks have made the situation deterioate drastically.

We have been told that there is no budget for fruits and vegetables, budget set aside for food is 2.00 a day. Complaining to the Dept of Fair Trading seems to have helped as we did get a banana yesterday. A lot of energy has been expended since they have been threatening to put 419 elderly out on the streets the last couple of years. They had been threatening to close 10 retirement villages

Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.
