Members phkrause
Its really sad that it even went as far as it did. An american general, not sure which one, said that we needed to keep communism from spreading into Vietnam from China. At the time the CIA was there with Ho Chi Ming, we were "allies", but for some stupid reason the president of the US pulled them out and left Ho Chi baffled. So who did he go to for help? The people we did not want to be there "the Chinese". I'd say pretty stupid decession. Than after we did get more involved, we did what we didn't do in the first Iraq war, we allowed the politicians to run the war. After Johnson became president, it was recommended that to shut down the Ho Chi Ming supply line, because this was feeding the NV, we needed to bomb the port of entry, but Johnson did not want to do that. He waited until it was to late. Again politicians running the everything and not allowing the generals to do what they do best. Like we did in WW1 and 2. The was could have been over with before we had to leave with our tails between our legs! pk Quote phkrause Obstinacy is a barrier to all improvement. - ChL
jasd
Let's remember that the Vietnam conflict was, as the Korean 'Police Action', UN run. We were under the direct command of the Under Sec't of the Security Coucil. It was our war only in that the other nations of the SEATO Treaty were incapable of pursuing the requirements of the Treaty without the USofA committing to carrying the water, so to speak. Same-o', same-o'. Anyway, before the conflict, the French franc was the dominant currency in Indochina. When we left Saigon, the US dollar was the ruling currency throughout the entire area. Money. The sad thing is that we are now almost entirely enslaved by lilliputian strings - those same Int'l Treaties, which our Founding Fathers warned against. Joe_in_RP
I must disagree. Respectfully. The Vietnam war was over religion. How religious pamphlets and radio broadcasts convinced one million Catholics to leave North Vietnam and live under Catholic rule in the South, overwhelming the Buddhists. How brutal persecution of Vietnamese Buddhists led to rioting and suicides by fire in the streets. Why the reports of what was really happening, written by American military and civil advisers, failed to reach the U.S. President. Why the project backfired, and as U.S. soldiers continued to die, the Vatican made a secret deal with Ho Chi Minh. http://www.reformation.org/chapter7.html
