SDA Extreme Make Over Coming Up

Fran

Recommended Posts

On Sunday, January 23, 2005, ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" will feature a new home for an Adventist family. From December 10-15, volunteers working around the clock demolished the family's once 1,200-square-foot house and unveiled the new 3,800-square-foot house.

The show reflects the power of prayer for the Sears family of Martinez, Calif. Since March 2004, Duke Medical University doctors in North Carolina have been treating 17-year-old Pleasant Hill Adventist Academy (PHAA) student Jhyrvé Sears for Krabbe Disease, a life-threatening and rare genetic disorder. Because the treatment left her immune system compromised, doctors declared her old, mold-ridden house unfit to live in.

Yet in this dark time, their Adventist community surrounded them and with the show's involvement, the Sears family is a testament of the power of one community united with a common mission. "Through the community, God has provided us with more than I could have ever imagined," said Karen, Jhyrvé's mother. "And after many dark, sleepless nights, I know that, like Daniel of the lion's den, God took care of

us. And now, at last, we're home."

I think this is fantastic. I only wish it were a group of Adventists helping Adventists. It is such a shame that we don't do more to help our own people in need. crazy.gif

I find this remark uncalled for, sarcastic or not JimBob.

This family goes to the church I attend in Pleasant Hill, Ca. I have heard about their struggles and feel for them. There have been many fundraisers to help this family out, the fundraisers were done by church members, so just to let everyone know the SDA church helped their own members...a lot!

The church helped the family a lot, please see my post to JimBob.

The students at the school even had a webcam set up to communicate with Jhyrve while she was in the hospital.

The church did a lot to help out this family.

OH MY GAWWDDD or GOSH....????

Let's see what these people say>>>>>

Will they allow the workers to work on sabbath??

Will the church get a commercial because they won't??

Stephanie Kinsey, Northern California Conference communication director asked me to post this message clarifying that she played only a very small part in this story. As George Johnson said in a follow-up message, "Stephanie Kinsey didn't recommend the family for the show. Lise Wallace, a teacher from Pleasant Hill Adventist Academy, and her husband, Steve, are the ones responsible for the recommendation. Stephanie was involved in a small part with the presentation to ABC. The Pacific Union Recorder story was one of the items included with the presentation the Wallaces sent in to ABC."

Stephanie's latest release reads like this:

In addition to watching the "ABC Extreme Makeover - Home Edition", (Sunday, January 23 at 8/7 Central), be sure to watch "How'd They Do That?" on Monday night, January 24 at 8/7 Central on your ABC station, for a behind-the-scenes look at the Sears family home makeover.

The church members of the Pleasant Hill SDA Church and the students/faculty of Pleasant Hill Adventist Academy have been heavily involved in the story, in every way possible. Group.gif

When you watch the programs you will see the Lord working in amazing ways.

Apparently some people like to complain a lot around here.

Cell phone issues need to posted in the appropriate place and then taken up with the pastor of the church.

Can't we talk about something good on this post? The good is that a community came together to help a family in need.

Kimberly,

I apologize for posting something that might mislead others to believe that Adventists don't help other Adventists. When I read that the group that was helping these people weren't Adventists, my immediate reaction was to question what the Adventist membership had done. There was no mention of the support she'd received from her own church.

From the description you've given, it sounds like she comes from a very loving, and caring Adventist community. It sounds likes she comes from a community of believers that I'd like to be a part of.

Thank you so much for sharing what Adventists do, indeed, do for other Adventists. This is wonderful news!

Truthfully, the questions we need to ask ourselves is, "What more can we do to help?" Instead of focusing on, "What have we already done?"

Again, thank you for sharing the news!

Neil, I am talking about JimBob mentioning cell phones here, not you. Did you see he mentioned that?

Maybe I'm not responding correctly in the right format. But, JimBob did complain about cell phones.

Sorry for the confusion. You sound much more positive!

We should not forget to give credit and thanks to the producers of the show, the volunteers and to Ty Pennington. These people are doing the Lord's work - just as much or more than anyone else, paid or not.

Ok, I am easily confused as some like Gail, and Amelia will tell you...I just saw the reply bar in the message was to me, but now I realize that you were directing your message to Jimbob....

Jimbob, you may now handle this message.... grin.gif

*tacking on*

This is the "ONLY" reality show that I watch and I love it. But I dont love it for the amazing way they can get the houses built in a week. I love it because of the strength of the people for whom the homes are being built. That is truly amazing. How they survive and love and stay together through all thats been thrown at them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/coolhello.gif" alt="" />

I want to watch this.

I do too, but I ditched cable a couple years ago when I discovered I simply wasn't using it and therefore could not justify tossing $45+ monthly out the window on it. So now I have no TV service. I use the TV to watch DVDs and play gaming platforms; that's all! smile.gif

Anyone willing to tape it for me? (*hopeful look*) mittelgr124.gif

I am so please God has answered their prayers for a solution to their dilemma. We can not look to anyone but God to sing praises to! God chooses the medium through which to bring blessings!

As I see it, God has actually used an army to bring about his will. Praise God. This is wonderful! Those who condemn any part of this should look in their mirror and see who they see behind their face. I am sure there will be negatives, but let’s praise God for the relief this is bringing to this family.

I am sure there are many qualifying Adventist families that could be submitted to the program. We could get busy and start writing letters.

Thank you to all the members of this family’s church and the Conference workers for what they have done for this family. May God bless you all! If they have further needs after receiving this gift and the burden is too great for their church family, I would ask that they let us know so we can be a small part of helping them. Many together have greater synergy than just the church family or the immediate family alone!

Remember that all of the credit goes to God and this is His handiwork. We are only servants for a given time. This is a God thing! I can't wait to see this family and praise God that He does hear our pleas for help!

Please, someone video it for Nico. I won't be able to, or I would. Lets get this taken care of so she will have the assurance that she will be able to see it. Us seeing this program is part of the blessing of God's grace!

P.S. - I'd be more than happy to cover the costs of a quality blank VCR tape and the proper packing & shipping fees, of course. thumbsup.gif

I'll tape it. If it comes out ok I'll let you know. The reason it may not come out ok is our reception out here in the backwoods is somewhat iffy. I dont mind watching programs with snow or ham radio ziggys or color flashing on and off, but you might. LOL

Hi, Nico!

We will tape the program for you, if you'd like! Do you prefer DVD or VHS? Send me a PM to let me know. We will also tape both Sunday and Monday's program.
