What's Your Denomination?

Just resurrecting this from an old thread...this is a great quiz. See what denomination most closely matches your beliefs!

My results were: Quaker 100%, Seventh-Day Adventist 99%.

2. Question 12 was broken - the only quasi-Christian choice was that we're saved by keeping the law...

Whee, I'm SDAer than Thou! La la la ... blink.gif

I noticed that little flaw in question #12 as well. I'm like, dude, I don't "attain" salvation in the first place!!! I picked the only two that made sense for me to pick:

  • Extinguish all cravings, attachments, and ignorance, or rid oneself of all impurities, to become fully enlightened (which I reinterpreted my own way as praying to cooperate with God for getting clean of sin, distractions, obstacles, etc.); and
  • Live very simply; renounce worldly goals and possessions.

Sooo ... whu'd you get for #12? tongue1.gif

It wasn't real comprehensive. For example I disagree with mainstream protestants over salvation only through profession of Christ. I believe there will be many in heaven that never had the chance to hear the gospel.

It also did not ask about diet and that plays a big role in a lot of religions like Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Adventism but not mainstream Protestantism.

It also didn't ask about the end of the world. I obviously believe like an Adventist and not a rapturist.

just tagging on here, not a specific reply to anybody...

There seems to be a lot of Orthodox Quakers here. (And not just the lefty liberal social-activist pacifist types like me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />)

Is this a denomination that we have more in common than we realize? Should we research this more? Should there be more inter-faith dialog and mutual cooperation between Adventists and Quakers?

Just speculating...

12. Choose ALL statements below that represent your beliefs.

  • Adhere strictly to the rites, practices, precepts, commandments, prohibitions, laws, sacraments, or ordinances of the faith to be rewarded after life.
  • All, even the wicked, are rewarded after life (e.g., go to heaven, merge with God) as God(s) is infinitely good and forgiving.
  • Extinguish all cravings, attachments, and ignorance, or rid oneself of all impurities, to become fully enlightened.
  • Learn all life's lessons through rebirths.
  • Realize your true nature as purely spirit (or soul) and not body, as one with the Absolute, Universal Soul.
  • Live very simply; renounce worldly goals and possessions.
  • Tap the power of the Ultimate (God, or the divine) through intercessory methods such as psychics, channeling, tarot cards, crystals, magic.
  • Humankind is "saved" through human effort rather than through religious or spiritual means.
I couldn't choose *any* of these options in good conscience, and think it shows a misunderstanding of Christianity to not include an alternative that can be characterised as 'justification by faith through grace'.

If they're talking about 'reward once you get to heaven' rather than 'cause of salvation'... but even then, there's no 'love God, love others' alternative: the first one probably breaks down to that...

And Aldona, yeah, that's intriguing and worth a look!

I marked this one but didn't read it all the way through. I didn't catch the "to be rewarded after life" Instead I would write "as a result of a relationship with a diety"

I also marked this one. That is probbally why Hinduism got on my list although my "renouncing" of worldly goals and possessions is not the same as the Hindus.

Again, the test isn't that comprehensive.

Eastern Orthodox 88%

Roman Catholic 88%

Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant 86%

Too bad we couldn't skip any questions that didn't have any answers we could agree with, or that they didn't have a "none of the above", at least for #12. There were at also least a couple of other questions where I couldn't quite agree with any of the answers and had to pick the closest. At least they did give us the chance to rate the priority of each question. The ones I didn't like the answers to I rated low.

Well,I took the quiz again, and mainly because I wanted to see what the discussion of # 12 was all about.

a) For me, SDA was in my # 4 position. But, Catholics Orthodox Jews, Islam and many more scored below my SDA rating.

What does this likely show? That SDAs are a probably a more diverse group than is commonly recognized.

It also likely shows that SDAs have more in common with other groups than many understand.

B) Question # 12: None of the responses fit, so I did not chose any. You will note that the question did not require you to either chose any responses, or to chose the one best answer. It only asked you to select as many response as you could agree with. I.e. If you agreed with none, it expected you to select none of them. And no seclection was a valid answer. Those of you who found that yuou cound not agree with any resposne, and yet picked one, may have skewed your result. Perhaps you should take the test again to see if there is any different result.

I guess we're all used to online quizzes that refuse to go on to the next page unless we have an answer selected for every single question.

By the way, did any of you take any of the other quizzes? I kept getting a message that beliefnet.com couldn't be found, so went directly to the beliefnet site and looked up the quiz. In the process, I discovered a lot of other quizzes, and took a whole bunch of them.

I am really puzzled about this. Eastern Orthodox????? Roman Catholic???? Wonder how that happened!

I understand the JW's. We share the State of the Dead, but not our belief of God.

Guess I better go look and see what this means, if anything. Some of these have me puzzled for sure. Especially the ones I hit twice like Quackers, Judaism and Christian/Protestant. Then Neo-Pagan??? sad25.gif I guess Ibelieve a little bit of everything!

Fran don't flip out hon! It's just a compatibility matrix is all. The percentiles rate how compatible your stated beliefs (within THEIR limited scope of choices, mind you) place you in tandem with those groups or movements.

My list went all the way down to 25 or so as well, but I cut it off to the top 10, I think. Anything under 50% doesn't really matter. Many religions have very similar broad-based beliefs when stated in vague terms like they used on the quiz.

The quiz is a great idea though -- they just need to refine it further!

Well, today, feeling a bit different, I took the quiz again....and this is what I got.

If I leave out #12, my results are different:

1. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (100%)

2. Seventh-day Adventist (98%)

3. Eastern Orthodox (89%)

4. Roman Catholic (89%)

5. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (87%)

But actually, while I don't believe that we ATTAIN salvation by any of the choices listed in #12, I do consider the one I chose, living simply and renouncing worldly possessions and goals, to be pretty close to what we do need to do in order to maintain the connection with God that is necessary for salvation. It's OK to have goals and possessions, but we must consider them to belong to God, to be used according to His will and plan for us personally. Everything we have and are must be totally surrendered to God, and we must be willing to change or give up any and all of them if He so directs. So it might not really be skewing my results much.

I then took the quiz yet again, this time including that same answer to #12, and got different results than either of the others. I'm pretty sure I entered the same basic answers each time, except for #12, but probably didn't give them all the same priority this time as before. Here's the first few on the third list:

1. Seventh-day Adventist (100%)

2. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (92%)

3. Orthodox Quaker (85%)

4. Eastern Orthodox (81%)

5. Roman Catholic (81%)

The neon light that jumps out at me about all these analyses of our beliefs is that none of us is 100% completely sure of what we believe 100% of the time. We are as wavering as the winds.

Thank God that He provides us a firm foundation!
