Zelaya's Return to Honduras Promises Fresh Violence and Political Turmoil

Quote:
After failing to return to Honduras by air two months ago, exiled President Manuel Zelaya got in underground on Monday, popping up at the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa after a clandestine trek over the border. His surprise appearance, impeccably timed to create buzz at the U.N. General Assembly in New York this week — where Zelaya was scheduled to speak — made de facto Honduran President Roberto Micheletti and other leaders of the June 28 military coup that ousted Zelaya look like losers in a game of whack-a-mole.

According to the Obama Administration, the coup that ousted President Zelaya was not a military coup because he was not replaced by a military leader.

Quote:
If the two sides can't come to an agreement now, with Zelaya in plain view of his dangerously polarized friends and foes, Latin America watchers worry worse violence could erupt in one of the hemisphere's poorest countries. Clashes were already under way Tuesday between Zelaya supporters and soldiers and riot police swinging clubs and shooting tear gas. "Micheletti may actually be less likely to accept a settlement now, given what a bitter pill Zelaya's return is for him to swallow," says Christopher Sabatini, senior director of policy at the Americas Society in New York and editor of the Americas Quarterly. "If so, both sides are probably en route to an institutional train wreck."

Is it just me or does it seem like TIME Magazine is actually hoping to see some violence and term oil so they can sell more magazines?

Quote:
In the middle is Costa Rican President and Nobel peace laureate Oscar Arias, whose San José Accord would re-seat Zelaya with limited powers while granting the coup leaders amnesty.

It is good to know that the Supreme Court of Honduras would be granted amnesty.

Quote:
Clinton called the moment "opportune" to restore Zelaya and "get on with the election that is currently scheduled for November, have a peaceful transition of presidential authority, and get Honduras back to constitutional and democratic rule."

This is the same woman whose husband was impeached by the US Congress. What does she mean by the word "constitutional"? Maybe she thinks there is a vast right-wing conspiracy to frame Zelaya.

Quote:
Micheletti — citing Zelaya's disregard for a Supreme Court order not to hold a constitutional reform referendum this year that the coup leaders say provoked his removal by armed soldiers — instead called on Brazil to "respect the judicial order handed down against Mr. Zelaya and deliver him to the competent authorities of Honduras" for arrest. Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim refused the request.

Doesn't sound like Zelaya has a bright political future in Honduras. Perhaps he should think about moving to Cuba, Venezuela or maybe even Brazil.

I wouldn't call him an "exiled President" at all. He tried to rig his country's government so that he'd be in perpetual power - and got caught. The Honduran people had enough backbone to stand up for their Constitutional law, as did the various branches of their government.

"Deposed dictator" is a more proper title - not that Time would ever get it right, though.

"The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. Communism and socialism normally takes root in poor countries. Honduras is the poorest country in Central America. Socialist leaders play off the idea that the wealth of the rich can be distributed among the poor to make everyone better off. In poor nations they are able to win popular elections. However socialism, in its purest form, only succeeds in making everyone poor except for corrupt government leaders.

Because of its appeal to the undereducated poor, President Zelaya has a big appeal to many of the Honduran peasants. Those that are more educated, such as the Congressional and Supreme Court leaders, see the danger. Honduras is in a good spot geographically. The country would profit from building an oil pipeline from the Atlantic to the Pacific so that oil tankers could use it to transport their product.

I just heard today that the Honduran Supreme Court voted 15 - 0 that President Zelaya was in violation of the Constitution and the majority of judges are from Zelaya's party. The man that replaced Zelaya was the leader in their Congress and also a member of Zelaya's party.

And it was found that Zelaya snuck into Honduras over the weekend, to start some more trouble.

TIME and company are STILL calling it a coup...
