"Knitting Superior to Crocheting." ?

Apparently Ellen White thought so

Quote:
"Knitting Superior to Crocheting.--Well now, here is our work. But we go into some houses and we see our sisters sitting with their little crochet needles, crocheting, and spending their time in this way. Well, I am not idle either when I am on the cars going from one place to another. I have my knitting, but what am I knitting for? Why I am knitting stockings for this one and for that one and the other. I am not using the crochet needle, but am knitting for those who are in need around me. There are many of our ministers who go with their feet thinly clad and I can give these to them and they do not come amiss, and I advise you to do the same." I would not read that as her thinking it was superior, just that she found the knitting easier

when she was being driven. That makes sense, I think there is much less eyestrain with knitting

especially something like socks.

Just my take.....and my knitting skills are way superior to my crotcheting abilities LOL

It seems like she thinks that with knitting at lest your being useful as to the reason for knitting over crocheting. Maybe than crocheting didn't do much in the way of helping those in need. Whereas knitting did. And isn't crocheting alot slower process. I do believe that my mom crochets and makes this for people in germany (mostly her family), sweaters I think? I know she knits. I wonder than what EGW thought of quilting, my wife's favorite way of making things for others.

By the decree enforcing the institution of the papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near. {5T 451.1}

It's probably easier to knit socks than crochet them.

Back in those days, crocheting was used for making doilies and lace. People didn't crochet sweaters, hats, and socks back then. So it was a matter of usefulness.

When you think about it, people don't crochet as many sweaters, etc now, either.

The most useful crocheted item that I have are towels that hang on the oven door handle. I have 2 or 3 of them, all given to me by people who crocheted them themselves.

I've made a bedspread using a long crochet hook. I forget the name of the stitch that is produced, but it is quite solid and can be embroidered on afterwards. It could be called an afghan hook. That is an example of something practical that was crocheted. The resulting stitch is very warm because there are no holes.

I still like knitting best for versatility and how it looks.

But then Nan ... why does it say ... "Knitting Superior to Crocheting." in the text of the quote?

Yes, the type of crochet hook that is as long as a knitting needle is called an afghan hook. The stitch is called afghan stitch. I have one, but I didn't care for the finished product. By not turning the crocheting after every row, I ended up with a trapezoidal shaped piece, and I couldn't get the sides not to slant. I like knitting a lot better than crocheting anyway.

My mom crochet's beautiful things, baby blankets, baby sweaters and booties, full blankets, she even made me socks once. She doesn't like knitting. Unfortunately arthritis is crippling her hands, so now she is quilting blankets.

She tried teaching me several times to crochet, but apparantly I have ADD when it comes to stuff like this.
