Amelia
Religious ritual An Orthodox Jewish couple in Jerusalem's Mea Shearim neighborhood begin the Kaparot ritual by reciting a prayer and then twirling a chicken over their heads to release the sins accumulated over the past year, ahead of the Yom Kippur holiday, which is the Day of Atonement. Moderators LynnDel Posted October 1, 2009 Moderators Share Posted October 1, 2009 A chicken goes limp when blood goes to its head. That's why when you catch a chicken, you grab it by its feet and carry it around, head down. Don't know if this means that the chicken is any more senseless when carried upside down than it is when it's pecking at another chicken's toes, but it appears that way, and therefore would mean that twirling the chicken wouldn't cause anguish to the chicken. That's my hypothesis. LD Quote LD
Guest
That is animal cruelty! It's just not right for that poor chicken to have to bear all those sins.

Members phkrause
There is nothing in the Bible about that. Probably just a tradition that has changed as the years have gone by. pk Quote phkrause Obstinacy is a barrier to all improvement. - ChL
