Administrators Gail Posted April 21, 2010 Administrators Share Posted April 21, 2010 Yesterday while out for her walk the dog found a baby rabbit, about 1 1/2 inches long. Hubby told Spooky, "What's in your mouth? Put it down!" and she gently placed it on the ground where it pawed at the air. It was still alive! At first I thought it was a mouse when it was brought to me. Then I saw its long ears. And THEN I said, "Awwww!! Cute!!" Russ took it to school where the science teacher volunteered to look after it. She and students have been giving it cat milk from the pet store and it seems to be doing ok on that. We get the bunny for this weekend. Does anybody know anything about little baby bunnies? Should we feed it anything else? I'm surprised that the dog didn't swallow it in one gulp, as she's a hunting dog and is not supposed to be allowed around small creatures, for fear that she would kill them. But DH said that she carried it as if it was her own baby, so gently. Liz
I found this article for you, it seems that diarrhea is the number one problem with the little ones. Outta Here
Gail, I raised 9 baby bunnies about 7 summers ago. They did just fine on the cat milk formula (had to feed them through an eye dropper). When they were ready to eat other foods, I gave them clover from our yard and tiny bits of carrots. But, by that time they made it clear enough to me that they wanted to be free in the wild. So, I let them go. I saw them grow up over the course of that summer--living in the yard and the neighbor's yards. You'll have no trouble at all, I'm sure! Dr. Rich
Gail, our family raised bunnies and one time we had one that the momma bunny would not let it have any milk so we took it in the house and fed it plain milk in an eyedropper and it did real good, but wanted lots of attention. We named it "Runt" and it became one of our nicest pets we ever had. We trained it to go potty in kitty litter like a cat does. But this was not a wild bunny so I don't know how that will turn out.
