I wish we would see more citizens getting involved like that to stop crimes from being committed or help people who've been hurt. Too many think it's none of their business or are afraid of taking any kind of action. We need more people like that guy that on the Forum-- unafraid to stand up and be counted.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Hi Richard & John,

While unsure about this specific case, much of the damage in Toronto was permitted by the police, like driving a police cruiser into a peaceful protester crowd, and then leaving it unattended & unlocked. Just walking away. Shortly after a very few individuals ransacked & set it ablaze while police watched and let the media have their fill of flames & broken glass. Then later called the fire dept. Very effective optics for the world press. Reports detail some protesters "changing clothes", donning 'Black Blok' outfits with facemasks and coming armed with pick axes. These spurred much of the damage to local business.

I've not read one report where police were ever in danger or threatened by the crowd. Indeed despite overwhelming resources (an estimated $1 billion(!!) in security for the G8 & G20 combined), police hung back and allowed the 'Black Blok' to make the evening news.

It's very probable these were police themselves, or hired by the police forces as 'agents provocateurs'. The exact same ruse was played on the press by Canadian officials at the Montebello summit (Bush, Harper, Calderon) in Quebec in August 2007. Violence was instigated by masked men carrying stones, but the protesters refused to follow. Instead these instigators had to flee into police protection where they were "arrested" during which it was noted they all wore the same police issue boots as their arresting companions. Several days later, facing heavy public pressure and photographic evidence, the Quebec police force admitted using their own to 'foment rebellion.'

But scenes of violence are helpful to justify the massive outlay in new hardware for the police. Sadly, it was all used to arrest innocent and peaceful protesters, journalists too. It never prevented damage to local business. This was allowed to happen.

So just to recap, the police have never had a more powerful presence at a Canadian event. More resources, hardware, personnel, auxiliary forces and concentration. They had all the power, but did not use it. They were reportedly conspicuously absent ('standing down') while the storefronts were broken up.

Yes John, more citizens should be aware of their social responsiblity, telling the truth and helping the weak, injured and downtrodden.

Did you notice the 2nd crime that was about to take place? Watch the man in the background as he starts to enter the store, then changes his mind.

Photojournalist: Police ignore Black Blok rampage - video testimony.

3 police cruisers abandoned in a peaceful downtown crowd. Then 75-100 vandals (in a crowd of ~10,000) get to work. Once their 90-minute spree is accomplished, they shed their black clothes (see video at 1:14) and melt into the crowd. Only THEN do police respond with force & 400 arrests against peaceful protesters.
