Stephen Hawking Says God Did Not Create the Universe: What Do You Think?

'World News' Wants to Know What You Think

Share:EmailTwitterFacebookMoreFarkTechnoratiGoogleLiveMy SpaceNewsvineRedditDeliciousMixxYahooFamed theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking now says definitely that God did not create the universe or spark the Big Bang.

Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking speaking at a public meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, May 11, 2008. Hawking now believes God did not create the universe: Do you agree or disagree?

(Mike Hutchings/Reuters)In his new book, "The Grand Design," scheduled for a September release, Hawking argues that the universe didn't need divine inspiration to come into being.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing," writes Hawking. "Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists why we exist.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going," he writes, according to excerpts published in the Times of London today.

Hawking, who co-wrote "The Grand Design" with Leonard Mlodinow, a U.S. physicist, has come to this position fairly recently.

Stephen Hawking on Religion, 'Science Will Win'WATCH: Stephen Hawking's Alien WarningIn June, when ABC News' Diane Sawyer asked him about the biggest mystery he'd like solved, Hawking said, "I want to know why the universe exists, why there is something greater than nothing."

"What could define God ... as the embodiment of the laws of nature. However, this is not what most people would think of that God," Hawking told Sawyer. "They made a humanlike being with whom one can have a personal relationship. When you look at the vast size of the universe and how insignificant an accidental human life is in it, that seems most impossible."

When Sawyer asked if there was a way to reconcile religion and science, Hawking told her, "There is a fundamental difference between religion, which is based on authority, [and] science, which is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works."

Our question to you today: Do you agree or disagree with Stephen Hawking about the role of God in creation?

Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.

I really like Stephen Hawking and hope to be able to read his book sometime.

I guess that great as Hawking's mind is, there is One far greater.

My dad was a great believer in higher education till the educated one sought to use his intellect to prove God did not exist. Then it became a curse and he was in danger of being a educated fool

I must disagree with him.

For well over a century, people on both sides of the question have tried to divorce science and religion.

The religious...because they think science won't vindicate the Word;

The secular...because they don't want science to vindicate the Word.

Science ultimately will validate God and His Word, as the Second Coming will both observable and verifiable, and every reasonable mind will know it is indeed God coming to take His people home.

"As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17

"The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. • 2 weeks later...

I feel I've been travelling around inside a tornado for the last few months....Things are starting to have colors now.....must not be Kansas anymore!

Truly, though, it's been really busy in my life over the last few months, and have not the chance to wander in here that often these days.

Blessings,
