Administrators Naomi Posted January 9, 2012 Administrators Share Posted January 9, 2012 White Truffles or Dark Truffles? How much would you pay for a fungus that grows in the ground? Dottie
Nothing! I don't like fungus of any kind, especially if it's on my plate at dinner!

Administrators Naomi Posted January 9, 2012 Author Administrators Share Posted January 9, 2012 Hi Liz, I have never eaten one ... what do they taste like? (And, if you say Chicken ... LOL) They must be really, really good to even be sold on the black market and controlled by some orginazed crime families. Administrators Gail Posted January 9, 2012 Administrators Share Posted January 9, 2012 Chocolate truffles are not like real ones... Real ones: Chocolate ones: The chocolate ones just LOOK like the real ones I have never tried one, but I like mushrooms, so I might be okay with those. Moderators LynnDel Posted January 9, 2012 Moderators Share Posted January 9, 2012 I've never bought or eaten a fungi truffle as far as I know. They bring $25 to $30 per pound, I understand. "The record price paid for a single white truffle was set in December 2007, when Macau casino owner Stanley Ho paid US$330,000 (£165,000) for a specimen weighing 1.5 kilograms (3.3 lb), discovered by Luciano Savini and his dog Rocco. One of the largest truffles found in decades, it was unearthed near Pisa and sold at an auction held simultaneously in Macau, Hong Kong and Florence. This record was then matched on November 27, 2010 when Ho again paid US$330,000 for a pair of white truffles including one weighing nearly a kilogram. (Wikipedia) According to reports, the truffles and other mushrooms downwind of the Chernobyl nuclear plant were poisoned with radiation and have now passed it on to the boars who eat them. This makes me wonder about the safety of mushrooms anywhere downwind of Japan. California, for instance... http://www.treehugger.com/natural-sciences/contaminated-truffles-irradiating-wild-boars.html LD Quote LD
Moderators Gerr Posted January 9, 2012 Moderators Share Posted January 9, 2012 Ugh!!! No wonder why they have to coat them with chocolate! Who would eat them otherwise? They grow underground without anything visible above ground? How in the world were they discovered?
Moderators LynnDel Posted January 9, 2012 Moderators Share Posted January 9, 2012 Surely you are joking about fungus being covered with chocolate, Gerry! The best thing about chocolate truffles is they are so smooooooooth. Chocolate all the way through. No fungus there. I think the boars went so hog-wild over the fungus truffles that humans had to check them out and found them to their liking. LD Quote LD
