Stan
The Volusia County Beach Patrol late Friday recovered the body of a 17-year-old boy who had been missing in the surf. The body of J.J. Branchedor was found a little after 7 p.m. in the water off New Smyrna Beach, said Capt. Tammy Marris of the Beach Patrol. The Avon Park teenager was on a field trip with Seminole County's Forest Lake Academy when he disappeared about 4:30 p.m. He and some other students had been swimming in an area with no lifeguards, Marris said. J.J. was a distance-learning student at Walker Memorial Academy in Avon Park. Both schools are affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist church. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the parents and family of J.J, the student body and faculty at each of these schools as well as our extended church family," Arne Nielsen, vice president of integrated youth ministries for the Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, wrote in a statement. It's possible that J.J. got caught in a rip current, rescuers said. There was an elevated risk of rip currents Friday, and the same conditions are predicted for Saturday, the National Weather Service in Melbourne said. nuff sed
Moral of the story: Don't go swimming at the beach where there there are no lifeguards. Bring your own lifeguard if you have a group. Nuff Sed
