Cuban Parliament: New Candidates from all Walks of Life

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 8 (ACN) The new Cuban parliament to be elected February 3 could have a large number of new deputies considering that the candidature proposed is 67 percent made up of new candidates with respect to the previous legislature.

The 612 persons nominated to Parliament deputies represent all sectors of Cuban society, according to the lists published by the National Candidature Commission, cited by pL news agency.

The lists include farmers, workers, cooperative members, professionals, religious persons, students, company executives, members of the armed forces and the interior ministry, political leaders and representatives of other social areas.

According to the Commission, 30 percent of the nominees are people linked to the production sector, while 48.86 are women. The average age of the proposed candidates fluctuates from 36 to 50 years.

Other figures indicate that 37 percent of the possible deputies are people of color, with nearly 80 percent of all having been born after 1959.

As to educational level, 82.68 percent of the nominees are university graduates, 16.83 finished senior high or pre-university and 0.49 concluded junior high school.

Over eight million Cubans will go to the polls February 3 to vote a list of candidates, whose 50 percent includes the people nominated in neighbor meetings who were elected councilors in last October and November municipal elections.

The other half of the list is made up of candidates nominated by candidature commissions of civil society organizations, which was approved by the councilors at Municipal Assemblies of People Power.
