The upside-down issue is silly - it is a reference to the fact that the image projected on the retina is upside down, but then the image gets encoded into the optical nerves and sent to the back of the brain where any concept of up/down left/right physical location in the brain is irrelevant.

There are only six. Indigo was added using imagination by Isaac Newton to get to the mystical number seven.

bevin, with those answers, do you think the teachers would pass or fail you?

I dunno, but I'm with bevin! In fact, the 7 colors are purely a phenomenon of language: apparently in Hopi only 3 colors are named in the rainbow. It's a continuum, not a set of bands of particular colors. If we 'see' the bands, it's just evidence of how powerfully our word labels effect what we perceive of the world...

Do we all know the reasons for the change in animals in Daniel?

Are you geographically challenged, like my wife? [shoot, I can find my way around any state/country, but can I remember where I parked my car in the parking lot??? I don't think so...That's what wives are for, isn't it??? She can find the car rather easily...

My problem is that I have forgotten most of the scientific stuff... Can you guys answer all those medical questions? Collar bone is also known as...? Smallest bone in the body is where???? The knee cap is known as the patella, right?

OK, I think these have been up long enough that I can have a bash at them. Someone please correct? I promise I did not/will not google any of these answers - all straight from the old brainium:

1. Where is the smallest bone found in your body? in your inner ear

2. Name the seven Central American countries in order from north to south (think BiG HEN CoP). Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Columbia, Panama

3. What are the scientific names for your collarbone, fingers/toes and kneecap? scapula, metatarsals/phalanges (?), patella

4. What were the names of Jesus' disciples (think two Ps, two Ts, four Js and BAMS)? Peter, Philip, Thomas, Thaddeus, James, other James, John, Judas, Barnabas, Andrew, Matthew, Simon (OK, I used the clue!)

5. Name the nine planets of our solar system (sing "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizza-pies" to the tune of "Swanee River"). Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (no clues required!)

6. What might account for the change of animals in the visions of Daniel 7 and 8? no idea

7. Give one example of the introductory vision of Jesus being used somewhere else in the book of Revelation. hmm, not sure off the top of my head

8. Besides Hebrew, part of the book of Daniel is written in:

a. Greek

b. Latin

c. Aramaic

d. Persian

9. The basic problem Paul was dealing with in Romans 14 was:

a. diet

b. worship days

c. judging others

d. animal rights

10. In Revelation 6, the people are afraid of the wrath of:

a. a lamb

b. a great red dragon

c. an angry God

d. their principal

11. How fast does light travel? 186,000 miles per second or 3x108 m/s

12. True or false: We can never see something as it really is. We only see the light reflected from it, and even that is upside down. Answered above. Also, I'm not sure what 'see something as it really is' would even mean: the act of seeing *necessarily involves* seeing the light reflected from it.

13. Name, in order, the seven colors in a spectrum of light. red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet

14. Without ______ we would see no color. light - actually, we need quite a lot of light: we see little or no colour in moonlight. other possible answers include 'eyes' and 'rods' or 'cones' (I can never remember which one is for colour vision). This is a badly formed question! It's 'guess what's in the teacher's head'.

15. Some light rays bend when they move from one transparent material to another. This bending is called _____________. refraction

2 out of 3 are correct...The scientific name for collarbone is clavicle. The scapula is near by, and is better known as that triangular bone in the back on the upper part of the rib cage.

Over all, Bravus, you did quite well.. I will even [how magnanimus of me! ] give you credit for the smallest bone being in the ear, as my A & P book does not name it...the sturup [sp] I believe is the name of the smallest bone in the body... Although I could be wrong...

Dang, I did know the difference between clavicle and scapula: thanks for the reminder.

I do think a lot of these questions are 'factoid/memory' type questions that don't have a huge amount to do with real, usable learning, but there ya go...

There are 3 signs of old age-

1] memory goes....

3] I forgot the other two....

This is the only one I could answer: Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduros, El Salvador, Guatamala, Beliz. That is seven in order from south to north, although the most southern state of Mexico, Chiapas, is also considered part of Central America. Brazil, Ecudaor and Columbia are in South America.

No points for this one. Notice it is a TRUE or FALSE question.

That's the problem: it's not *a* true or false question, it's several:

We can never see something as it really is. As noted above, I have deep philosophical questions about whether this statement is even a coherent statement in English, but assuming it is, I say it's false.

We only see the light reflected from it, true

and even that is upside down. false - as bevin pointed out above. And it's upside down where? not before it enters our eyes, yes at the retina, not in our brain, where vision actually takes place

Sorry to seem pedantic, but it's just bad question writing to have 3 virtually independent statements in a true or false item.

OK, as a teacher, how would you score this question as you have answered it?

I'd cuss out (vegetarianly, of course!) the person who assigned the question - including me if it was me! Then, if kids answered as I did above, I'd have to give them full marks: they've demonstrated understanding. I'd be extremely hard pressed to score the rest, though: I could see good cases to be made for answering *either* 'true' or 'false' if one were forced to choose.

You mentioned that the question was poorly written. Is there such a thing as a class on test writing? Or do you learn as you go?
