Meditation

Does anyone know the principles behind or form taken for meditation as expressed in scripture. Whilst some may fear the implications of meditation as practised by other religions surely the constant reference to meditation in scripture must be of some benefit to the one who meditates and is transferrable to a modern devotional life.

Anyone?

I guess one could call my ponderings meditation.

When I ponder before Abba, there is generally a text I'm wrestling with, or a concept or topic, and I pray about it. But I more than pray about it, I ponder it before Him.

I think about it, in a calm oasis of the Holy Spirit, speaking to Abba and Jesus as I think. I'm also careful to listen, because if I'm looking for answers, failing to listen ensures I don't get any....

I believe Clio is exactly right when she states that she meditates on some thing. She is considering some matter that is inportant to her and her relationship with her heavenly father (Abba) and is allowing time and space for Him to communicate with her in some meaningful way.

As I understand meditation in other religions (particularly the Eastern ones) the key is to empty the mind of all conscious thoughts first, allowing a clean slate as it were. It is this emptiness, this lack of direction, which allows an opening for influences and personages other than Christ or His angels.

Psalms 1:2 But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Psalms 63:6 When I remember thee upon my bed, [and] meditate on thee in the [night] watches.

Psalms 77:12 I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.

Psalms 119:5 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.

Psalms 119:48 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

Psalms 119:148 Mine eyes prevent the [night] watches, that I might meditate in thy word.

Psalms 143:5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.

1 Timothy 4:15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them;

Psalms 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies [are] my meditation.

Never does the Bible indicate we are to meditate by emptying our mind. Instead we are to meditate/ponder the Word, the statutes, the precepts of our loving Abba.

His Word, writ large on our hearts, gets there through our meditation/pondering of it before Him.
